I went through this with my dads 2008 Edge. We replaced the Pcm and kept the coils. the coils fried the pcm. Ford warrantied the work and replaced both the coils and the pcm the second time.

Man! Inflation/Covid is real! So many issues with aftermarket and factory parts as well. I’m currently work on one customer’s car fiat the clutch release lever (fork) is out until sept to mid October which is freaking crazy. I even try lqk they won’t sell separately have to buy whole used manual transmission which around 1300

Had this happen to my 09 Taurus X . (08 build date) simple diagnosis . Swapped plug and coil pack from known good firing cylinder . No change in cylinder misfire code . Checked continuity from coil to pcm wiring harness . Good continuity . No output from coil driver is all that's left . Ordered a PCM from Flagship One online . Sent them my vin and they programed it to my vehicle . Cost was around $200 . Unfortunately it cost me another $100 to program the key to the pcm . The hardest part was finding someone to do this . Got my baby back on the road and couldn't be happier !

Same engine I have. Best engine I personally ever had other than the 2.5 4 I had in my ranger & the 4.6 in the Vic my dad had. I’ll only have you touch my vehicles too. Love you brother

Thanks for the info Rich extremely helpful information. A year or so ago we had a flex come through and get a mis-diagnosis. All 6 coils plugs and pcm were replaced to no avail. The technician looking at it didn't know what to look for to see a bad driver in the PCM looking at identifix he assumed it was the pcm. It ended up being a broken valve spring. A cylinder leakage and compression test didn't show any problems on the cylinder either which to him pointed in the direction of the pcm. The crap side of the situation is to find the broken valve spring the cam and lash cap had to be removed. Thank you for showing the pids to look over. I wish we had all the information that dealership technicians do. The other illustrations on spark duration could be extremely helpful information for diagnosis as well.

Technology can be great but there’s something to be said for old distributors with points and condensers, great video 👍😁

Used to flood the engine when an injector driver failed. The would hold the circuit closed leaving the injector open 100%. Now it's coil driver failures, shame, I still don't agree with mounting the PCM under the hood. Leave them under the dash protected for longer life.

The main remanner for Cardone and a couple other outfits that supply 90% of the remanned electronics for your big name parts houses is located downstate from you in Marissa Illinois. His shop is called ECM+ or something along those lines. If you are ever in a pinch and can't find what you need in a reasonable timeframe, you can always contact him and ship directly to him.

Had a 3.5 N/A explorer with aftermarket ignition coils that had split down the side and shorted against the spark plug tubes and then frying the pcm drivers lol

Ahh shoot I ran into this like a year ago or so I think it was a Taurus, another shop had already replaced all the plugs, coils, and injectors, I did a few minutes of research and came across the TSB. I don’t understand it because I research TSBs and common issue on damn near every car if it’s got a weird issue before I even attempt to diag, I always want to know what I’m getting into before chasing my tail around. It amazes me that some of these other shops aren’t capable of just taking a few minutes to research, they’d rather just launch a million parts at a car and waste a customers money and piss them off and loose a customer for life, our shop is in the business of gaining customers, not just making a quick buck on a one time customer that won’t come back

There are shops that can repair these PCMs but Ford made them nearly impossible to access the internal circuit board. The PCM case halves are permanently glued, and it's not coming apart without very specialized tools.

Hello, Have seen the problem on a 2010 Edge too. Cylinder one was not firing, I thing it is located on firewall side and not easy to access so to diagnose fast I decided to check on the harness and the PCM power and ground circuit of that cylinder one , using a LED test light only. Garage changed 6 coils and plugs but car was still running on 5 cylinders before he asked me to check on. Friend sold the car and I forgot to follow the story. Great informations here again, you bring us to the next level , understanding that diagnose the problem , take time to do your research as alot of infos are accessible over the net or with master tech as Rich here. Question I have for anyone is concerning the PCM ground circuit, can we use a conventional test light to test those grounds circuits like the coils and injectors , I'm asking this for my education . Thanks Tigo

I it's better to use an oscilloscope to see if you have any kind of current flow there or if the driver's down honestly I don't like using test lights on circuits but a lot of people say LED ones are fine

The shops he used weren’t very good, first thing a modern independent shop does is run and check all tsbs on a problem vehicle especially, this is a known issue with most shops around here. You are correct it’s often cheaper in the long run to use the dealer,he may pay more per hour but you are done diagnosing in one hour, with a confirmed fix plan under way.Add up all the time and diagnostic fees he paid at all the other shops plus the fact that he will probably be setting p0420/430 soon because they drove it with a dead hole dumping raw fuel into the cats, running them hot.

But at the end of they day still have to fix the issue that caused the failure of the ecm. Which was the coil. With that type of engine might as we'll replace at least the three coils under the intake, plus all six sparkplugs. Just more headache and time for the customer doing it the way he did.

But even an independent shop should have a service like Alldata, Mitchell OnDemand, etc. Even Google can help. When you get to a point where you don't know a little bit of research would have found a TSB. Now would they have been able to do anything? Idk? But that would have saved the customer from the multiple other shops. We need to be better than this people. Doesn't matter where you are. Doesn't matter if it's you or your shop. Either you will pull them up to your level or you will find a new shop that is.

Even with what you are saying you are few and fare between when it comes to dealer techs. There are clearly not as many techs like you than there needs to be. When I was working in dealerships through the 80’s the really good techs would get their training and leave because the dealer management would pile all the warranty jobs, that paid half of regular time, on the trained techs. Their putting in 40 hour weeks with paychecks at only 30 hours. Maybe it’s changed since I was at a dealership but what I’ve seen come to me at my home shop it doesn’t look like it has.
