Great question! I'd go Quadro all the way if you're using Revit, Solidworks, or another software that has Workstation GPU requirements. The reason so many GTX and RTX are listed is they are more cost effective. So if the system does not require it, you can save some money.

However since windows 11 update tanked the laptop, I am searching for a laptop that can run Unreal smoothly. I will be getting the Acer Conceptd 5, Asus Rog M16, or the Asus Zenbook Pro.

I picked up the normal Legion 5 with the 5800H and 3070. I have also put 64gb of ram into it. If you don't mind using a 1080p screen and you want to save a buck but still get a kickass performing system, it's a great option and it keeps cool for days. Just make sure to get the 165hz panel, which has 100% srgb accuracy.

Thanks for putting out this video, it was informative. I will say - often someone using a 3D program won't be using it exclusively for modeling but also rendering, at least for material and lighting previews. In that case specs such as GPU can become important. I suspect those benchmarks (in Maya, for example) were done moving around the viewport or doing basic modeling tasks, not rendering millions of polygons or using IPR rendering in Vray / Arnold / Redshift, etc. which a lot of these programs do.

Purchased a ZenBook Pro duo 15.6" OLED (UX582), which is mid-high end laptop. Moved from MacOS to Windows, since: * Blender takes benefits of CUDA cores / Optix (NVidia graphics) * Blender takes advantage of Intel instruction set for image anti-aliasing viewport * Adobe Substance suite uses iRay render engine (NVidia-only GPU accelerated workflow) * Daz Studio uses iRay render engine / dForce cloth simulation (NVidia-only GPU acceletared workflow) * Marvelous Desginer takes benefits from NVidia GPUs for cloth simulation * Janga's EmberGen last time I checked is only available for Windows Apple cuts off OpenGL / OpenCL support some operating systems versions ago, and few modeling 3D apps supports Metal API (C4D for instance)... and haven't even gotten to evaluate if M1s GPUs are used currently by commercial 3D applications

Hi Ben. Great videos. I have an old Vaio with great specs but a screen on its way out. I use mainly AutoCAD and photoshop, but will need to use Revit and would like a laptop that can handle Vray for Sketchup or possibly Rhino. The cost to fix my old machine is around $250-300, but it's 8 years old and I figure even a $800-900 machine today could surpass it. I'm open to suggestions for new or even refurbished or last years models. For newer laptops, I've seen the following as options though they of course all can have tweaks to their configurations: Acer Nitro 5, Asus Dash (GTX 1650 ti, RTX 3050, or 3060), Dell Inspiron 7501, and the HP Victus. I'm concerned that these may not have enough cores to do multiple tasks (except perhaps the Dell which has a 10th Gen 6 core CPU). Sorry my question is so broad, but I have watched a few of your videos (& those of others) and not really found my little niche. Thanks for your help! J

Hey Anthony. What products do you work on. Is it form factor or do you spec out electronics and other electromechanical elements. How do you find work etc. What is the desire to move to Creo and Sworks. Rhino is more dedicated to organic surfacing. You may want to retain Rhino for enclosure form modeling and then export to creo sworks or any other parametric cad to add bosses threads part lines etc.

@@punkisinthedetails1470 Hi- thanks for the reply :) I work on a variety of different products- from hearing aids to X-ray machines. I work on physical product design (form factors). More and more these days I need to create solid models for export to either 3D printing or modelmakers. It's possible with Rhino, but wall thicknesses, fixation ribs/ bosses etc are always a struggle- It's just not built for that. I also work on co-design with engineers a lot (tweaking designs to fit extremely detailed interior electronics). I'm constantly rebuilding in Rhino. I've seen designers recently working really well on organic (but controlled) surfacing in Solidworks. The problem with the workflow you describe above (hybrid) is that if there is any change across the project, it's almost impossible to change exterior surfaces without crashing the Creo/ Solidworks model tree. Engineers are always reluctant to work this way. They rebuild surfaces natively & then surfacing is often not great. Potential downsides to Solidworks I can see are; - Have to move to Windows - A bit more of a rigid tool (I model a lot in a 3D view currently in Rhino (have been using for 15 years +) - Price (Solidworks is $$$) - Clients and engineering teams I collaborate with use either Solidworks or Creo (so no easy solution :( ) Potential upsides are huge; - Parametric - Solid modeler at its core - Better continuity/ exchange with engineering

Man, 3050 it’s not a deal for rendering. It has only 4GB VRAM, so it will be really slow. You should probably save some money and go for a 3060. It’s worth kinda 100-300$ more (depending on the model), but the performance increases to 20-30%. I am working with 1660Ti, and it performs better as an 3050Ti Laptop of my friend. You could also try to find Refubrished options, but only Certified

Nice to see some performance benchmarks, but I think that's not the whole truth. If you are comparing the architecture than you can see that the certified laptops got ecc memory inside the gpu. They are by nature not so fast like the usually used high performance memory. It will make more sense to compare the 3d models accuracy to find out if there are some failures inside the rendered models and are the ecc equipped gpus are more better in this category. In my opinion that's exactly that what you payed for, if you got an certified laptop like the HP Z studio or something like this.

you can run autocad with a ryzen 5 or intel 5, you need ram for autocad to handle all the lines and line weigts and hatches, same for photoshop, although i am not sure the minimum gpu for photoshop but autocad doesn’t exactly need an external gpu.

@@ricbattaglia6976 depends, the cpu determines how powerful it can run the program while the gpu it's used for programs like real time rendering, vray, corona, enscape. So it depends on what program you are using, the only thing in common, you need RAM, the more the better. My recommendation for a balanced laptop would one with and i7 or Ryzen 7 with and rtx 2060 or 3060 with 16 to 32 gb of RAM, but this depends on whether you render a lot, if you don't, you can pick a laptop with a lower GPU and it would cost less.
