I'm always excited to see people talking about EGBO. I initially began watching it because a few of my friends said it had good autistic representation. Kayla Cromer was one of the first female autistic leads in a sitcom and I think she did a great job even if the early go was a bit more obvious about her neurodivergence. Still it developed in a way that I could tell was authentic and personal to her and I loved seeing things around her having her own agency in relationships and avoiding the infantilizing stories. The first season of EGBO does a great job of depicting autism as more than a hindrance to narrative and I actually found the season one finale very touching with her recognizing her inability to move away for school. As a whole, it was an amazing evolution that only continued to grow with Lillian Carrier as things evolved. Given that Josh Thomas came out as autistic after season two, it only showed why this worked so well. The show will always be special for me because of where I was on my personal journey. I had been learning about asexuality a few months before season two and was well into the series by the time the Drea plot emerged. It was exciting to have that happen to a show I was actively watching and discovered on my own. Everything about it felt cathartic. It was that asexuals could be in relationships and be open to their partner having a sex life. There was so much to their dynamic that I connected with as an autistic asexual, and I'm thankful it got as far as I did. Much like the autism subject in season one, I think that the asexuality was likely to evolve if the series continued and become more nuanced in a great way, but for what limited time there was, I'm thankful for what's there - especially since I refuse to watch Sex Education type shows for five seconds of recognition and a few buzzy catchphrases. I'm always happy to hear people discovering this show and I hope they love it as much as I do. Even if I don't think it mirrors my experience necessarily, I enjoy that there's at least the validation of the perspective being seen in a positive and accurate way. I hope there's more to come like this because I didn't know how much I needed it. If you want to get an interesting perspective on ace rep in media, I recommend Rowan Ellis' channel. She has two videos doing deep dives on this subject and I think is a good place to start.

Yes! I've wanted to watch it for the Autism content for ages - glad that KC's recommendation could be what pushed me to actually do it! Similarly not a perfect mirror of my experiences but heaps in here that is exactly what I needed to see. And yes, love Rowan Ellis. I am aware of what ace rep is out there, just haven't really experienced mush of it for myself yet. Hopefully I can fix that :)
