So glad Perri stood up to him

Jeff’s stubbornness sometimes blinds him from making logical predictions, such as his scepticism towards Everything Everywhere and I also think he is off regarding The Substance this season. However he clearly has a better feel on the pulse of award season in general, the momentum could always change but right now the race is definitely between Chalamet and Brody
@memorieswithouthomes14384 күн бұрын
Jeff has a point with Eisenberg playing himself. Not to diminish his work but it’s so close to his wheelhouse that I can’t support a nomination. Grant has been attending events and doing interviews at the same rate as Rami Malek was for Bohemian Rhapsody. And we cannot rule it out. He’s a legitimate number 6-7 at this point.

I will preface this by saying that I love Jeff, I think he's the wild card that makes the show extra entertaining; without him there'd be too much agreement and we'd miss out on fun bets and arguments. Having said that, I feel like his arrogance regarding how the old school Academy would vote provides him with both his best and worst takes. He was convinced that Parasite wouldn't have a chance. He had a similar snide attitude towards EEAAO. If those movies can *win* Best Picture, surely it's not too far out of the realm of possibility that The Substance could get nominated. Especially with how well it's been performing in the precursors. Kind of like Get Out, the film was something of a global phenomenon (coming from someone who merely liked it but didn't love it). I think it's not only getting a nomination, Fargeat is a near-lock for Best Director. With regard to Best Actor, though, he's totally right; Fiennes will at best win BAFTA but nothing else. He is this year's Colin Farrell for Banshees. Excellent career, excellent performance, but is understated and will ultimately be overshadowed by Timmy and Brody love. Hence why I say that Jeff's arrogance gives him some of his best and worst takes. While Perri and Mantz are too optimistic and shower too much praise on pretty average movies, Jeff is more blunt and realistic, but occasionally gets stuck in the past and is unwilling to bend his preconceived notions of what isn't an "Oscar movie". Overall though, great show!

While I agree with your overall point, I think The Substance isn’t the phenomenon people think it is. I think its a film that based on premise should’ve been a Shudder hit, but has gone on to appeal to the wider film loving community. But when we’re talking overall audience, we’re talking Box Office (I will be using domestic numbers only). Parasite grossed $25 million in only limited release prior to going wide following its BP nom. EEAAO made $70 million in its initial release. Get Out made $175 million. And though you didnt mention it, as Silence of the Lambs is the pinnacle of horror at the Oscars, it grossed $117 million just in its initial run before dropping out of wide release. The Substance has made $16 million domestic, and $56 million worldwide. Its not as wide reaching as any example listed. Maybe this is all on MUBI’s ability to distribute as well as others. I think it is still very much up in the air if it sneaks in.
@sebastiano7283 күн бұрын
@@aaronconnole8325 Fair enough on The Substance's box office numbers, good argument! I think beyond commercial success, though, the film won an award at Cannes and has exceeded expectations in the Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations. Get Out only managed two nominations at the GG's, The Substance has five. Most importantly, Fargeat has been nominated everywhere for directing, and seems to be the most likely female nominee at the Academy Awards. If Fargeat is by all accounts more likely to get nominated than James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, Tim Fehlbaum for September 5, Eisenberg for A Real Pain, or Greg Kwedar for Sing Sing, my instinct is that The Substance is ahead in the pecking order compared to these other contenders. Sure, she could pull a Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round, but AR was never really in Best Picture nomination consideration, whereas The Substance definitely is.

Besides, it has a 71/100 on Metacritic, so Jeff may find it mediocre, but that is not the general consensus. By the way, Jeff, you should respect other people's taste. Going into the season I thought Hugh Grant had a zero percent chance, but not anymore. Currently he has 2 precursors and SAG has nominated him before + it’s a very showy role with a lot of monologues. I can see him getting in at the Bafta’s as well given that he’s British. In terms of the Oscar’s, he’s never been nominated before and has that “overdue” narrative. Very interesting.

Before you praise a movie’s cinematography (Wicked) for the camera movement I think you have to consider the quality of the lighting and focus in those images. It’s a lot easier to incorporate gymnastic camera movement if you’ve totally abandoned lighting and focusing your images. It doesn’t matter how much the camera moves if the lighting and focus are so bad you can barely see anything, and it mutes the color (a significant element of the story) in the process. That is not masterful work that deserves recognition, that’s evidence the cinematographer needs to go back to school.

Jeff's belief that The Substance will not be one of ten best picture nominations is not just wrong, it is bizarre. I understand his hunch but the problem with his theory is that it is getting grossly over-nominated in multiple places. Seriously over-performing anyone's expectations going into the season. Qualley having been nominated repeatedly is ridiculous (I like her a lot but the idea that is a top five performance in a year stacked with supporting actresses is weird) This is typical of movies a lot of people just really WANT to vote for. We have seen awards nominations for screenplay, two actresses, make-up, fx (weird), probably will get named for editing a few places... It is like critics picking Wicked for Jonathan Bailey or cinematography -- these are stretches and a reliable sign that people just want to vote for the movie. They enjoy voting for it. The Substance is a nomination lock.
@purekinema5 күн бұрын
There are seven movies that have performed very well and are all fighting for the last five spots: Dune 2, Nickel Boys, A Complete Unknown, The Substance, A Real Pain, September 5, and Sing Sing. There is a great argument to make for all of them, and there outside shots for some others, especially the international feature contenders. Consider the fact that the last best picture drama nominee at the Globes to miss Best Picture is If Beale Street Can Talk from 2018. You can argue that the Oscars is a voting body that is less likely to go for The Substance than the precursors so far.
@itsybitsy9995 күн бұрын
It isn't bizarre at all. This over-performance you speak of has been from non-industry organisations. I want The Substance to get in as much as anybody but I'm not predicting it in Picture right now because I don't think the Academy is cool enough to do it.

Honestly, considering the second half of the movie got bizarre and there were so many plot holes in the film, I don't understand the Substance's hype and I don't see the Academy nomming it. @@Gavin48I'm a feminist and liked Anora. I don't get why I should not like it.

Jeff, no to Sebastian….Scott…no way Hugh…and Perri….no to Jesse. It’s Daniel Craig! But Jeff is right about Brody and Chalamet for the win….

The substance for me isn’t as good as I’m hearing. It’s a decent film but not awards potential. I don’t get the love for it.

Jeff is a boomer that is still living in boomerland. He's never gonna agree on liking horror/sci-fi or anything super original at the Oscars.

Hold on there, Junior, Jeff is a millennial like me, the heirs to the title of The Greatest generation. We’ve seen genre pictures you haven’t even heard of.

I think the brutalist is going to be the irishman = A whole ton of nominations, but not a single win

I hope Chalamet won't get it. Brody and Fiennes provided stellar performances

You sound already your predict winner of Oscar 2025 is Timothee Chalamet.
