In 1973, Liza won her Oscar for portraying Sally Bowles. While she had history on her side (in addition to her great performance), the other nominees had history working against them.
I'll be posting a video for EVERY Best Actress Oscar, so be sure to subscribe to my channel and follow me on Twitter.

Same. Mad respect to the narrator. People will often downplay or avoid discussing the reality of racism because it makes them too uncomfortable. But I can respect any White person who can talk openly and honestly about systematic racism against African-Americans (and other people of color) without being riddled with guilt and dodging the topic entirely.

tiffsaver Liza was actually rather miscast for Sally. In both the short story (by Isherwood), the play (I Am a Camera), and original musical Sally is supposed to be a pretentious no-talent hack who doesn’t care about performing, but rather enjoys the attention it brings her. Liza was far for talented for this role, and in playing her transformed the character into a star waiting to be discovered. That being said, despite drastically changing the character, Liza’s performance was stunning.

@@jaidenlawrence3746 understandable. The Acadamy is notorious for giving people lifetime achievement oscars after snubbing them for years. They did the same thing to Alfred Hitchcock. They’ll snub actors, actresses and film makers who don’t fit into their perfect Hollywood box and then give the lifetime award many years later. I think the same thing happened with Carey Grant too. Thank you. To place Minnelli over Tyson this year is not unfair and by saying that I'm in no way underplaying the role of institutionalized racism that was endemic in Hollywood for decades. But Minnelli in Cabaret was one of those rare performances where the actress becomes a channel for something other (sorry that's really cheesy, but it fits.) She had that kind of magnetism that old stars used to have, she emitted light - that performance was a force of nature. You can ask was that only because Liza Minnelli is Sally Bowles and vice versa - but it doesn't matter; when you put all the performances side by side you have the pretty awful, Smith, to the brilliant - but Minnelli that year was something other. Can I tell you what also pisses me off about the race baiting of the moment, especially Black Panther based, they've just written Wesley Snipes out of the narrative and timeline with Blade, and all the brilliant performances by great actors, the two time Oscar brilliance of Washington.
@sandrasanders706
@sandrasanders706 4 жыл бұрын
@fittallgayblond sadly I think that is the case I don't think it was so much more racism was that Cabaret was such an unbelievably brilliant Musical. And if you want to know about racism in films when they begin to shut out films like The Color Purple for is really stupid reasons they know something is really really wrong with the academy.

Sandra Sanders: That is a textbook example of the Oscars being too white! One could argue that Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery May have cancelled each other out in the best supporting category, but there is no explanation for Whoopi’s loss. None. And I think from that era on, the Oscar has become less and less a real standard of greatness. It is now too full of politics and money.

What I love about these videos is because it's not about who "earned" or "deserved" the Oscar more - like the comments tend to battle over. In fact, they often argue the point that most of, if not all, the nominees earned the chance to win it. What these videos are really about is looking into the mentality of society, the academy, and the public at the particular time and what factors play into why someone may or may not have won the Oscar. They are such strong, focused, and objective videos and are so smartly made and written. Bravo, and I'm excited for many more.

Interesting thing about Cicely Tyson, who was absolutely lovely in Sounder, is that her career, now spanning almost seven decades, is largely concentrated in television. Theatrical films provided occasional acting gigs, but series work, guest appearances and television films were Tyson's bread and butter - and to a large degree, still are. More important, back in the 70s, television and film work were rigidly demarcated: one was either a film actor or a television actor, but rarely both. ( A bit of a pecking order system, I think.) That distinction has largely eroded with the advent of cable and streaming outlets, and nowadays actors go wherever the good roles are, but I have to wonder if back in the 70s the perception that Tyson was more identified with television ultimately counted against her. Regardless, there's something else worth noting here: roles - and particularly good roles - for black women in American films may have been few and far between throughout most of the 20th century, however, television fielded vastly more opportunities for black actresses, suggesting it was a much more egalitarian and inclusive medium than films ever were (and that extends to the present). Tyson was able to do some great work on TV, most notably the legendary TV film "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman." Of course, some years later, Sally Fields was able to break out of the straight jacket of 'TV actress' and go on to win 2 Oscars.

Diana Ross wasn’t “Queen of Disco” then, but pop R&B, then called “Motown.” Part of “Lady Sings the Blues” was filmed at my school; I was there the day she and Barry Gordy were there to walk there campus. She was so much like the girls, waiflike, mincing, fashionable with attitude, that we thought she was a potential new girl looking the school over with her dad. And by then she had to be at least 10 years older than we were, at least, closer to 15. Needless to say, she got heckled and even more needless to say, we were shocked into silence once we realized who she really was!

That’s an incredible story! As a child of the 70’s, Diana Ross is so iconic to me - one of the first singing voices I remember as a child. When I first heard “Beat It” on the radio, I remember arguing with my mom bc I was convinced that was Diana Ross singing! Lol. I adored her and still do! I would love to have seen her in person!! Especially back then when she was the Beyoncé of the 60’s/70’s/80’s!!

Ok good video but I kinda feel you didn't give blaxploitan enough credit. If someone isn't that familiar with underground cinema, no blaxploitation are not films exploiting black people but is a term for films that rely entirely on their genre to make money. Blaxploitation were often independent and were created and funded mostly by the black community. Although the violent themes did have some backlash from civil rights groups it also still gained alot of praise from the community for its anti-establishment message and culturally relevant themes. These films mostly just offered a way for black representation in a time where it was still very limited.

I love Blaxploitation films as much as anyone & yes, A LOT of effort was put into those films from black people. However, you are misinformed that most of these movies were funded, written, produced & directed by all or even mostly black people. That isn't true. Many of these films were backed, financed, produced & written by white men. These films were done on a low budget & they turned a nice profit in theaters. A lot of smaller time business men wanted in on it, so they often put up the money to produce said films.

Marina I know releasing the vote totals could embarrass the losing actresses, but i feel that Cicely and Liv both must have been close. A three way tie would have been history. I agree with everyone who uses the word "guilt". Her peers never gave Judy Garland a competetive Oscar and now it was too late. They could pat themselves on the back for giving an Oscar to her daughter. Of course that takes nothing away from Liza's performance. But as we all know, when the academy members cast their ballots there's a lot more going on than what's onscreen.

It is sad that neither Diana Ross & Cicely Tyson had productive careers in Hollywood after their 1972 Best Actress nominations, but neither did Liza Minnelli & she won! Hollywood just wasn't kind to African American female stars or stars of musicals. Bette Midler found this out later in the decade for The Rose. The Hollywood studios should have been queuing up to make movies with Ross, Minnelli & Midler, all larger-than-life, gorgeous & wonderful movie stars. Ross should have followed Lady Sings the Blues with the Josephine Baker story. But it was not to be. In less than a decade Diana ended up singing the title song of a movie starring a white actress (It's My Turn, 1980: Jill Clayburgh), Liza ended up in a couple of Arthur nonsense movies. Only Bette managed to revive her movie career in a big way, but not until 1986 & with very few musicals. Thank goodness for her TV movie version of Gypsy!

Lizzie Allen What the fuck are u talking about? Cicely Tyson won a fucking Emmy Award for 'Jane Pittman' way after the Oscars and she was in the biggest TV series of the 1970s called 'Roots'. Diana Ross continued to work in Hollywood doing films and network tv specials until the mid 1980s.. Its much harder to cast women such as Liza and Diana in movie roles because each were huge stars outside of movies.. Neither were hurting for work, Liza was also in Victor Victoria on Broadway. Liza has done so many stage shows that I can't keep up.
