Are you a mixed media artist who suffers from prolific art supply hoarding?! ME TOO!!! First, you are not alone :)
It's GREAT to collect art supplies but it's NOT great to have them take over your art space so that come creation time you're lost and totally overwhelmed and don't know where to find anything when you suddenly, desperately, need it.
Today I'll share with you my exact process for WHY and HOW I store my watercolors in my at-home studio.
This is the link to my favorite palette you'll see me using: amzn.to/3PFeyUq
Best part? It's only $10.

Hey Karen! When I fill new pans I put a small magnet IN the pan BEFORE I put the paint in (I get the metal magnets from Amazon, they aren't very expensive). Then I have a magnetic pan without the bother of the glued on strip that always falls off. For non metalic containers, such as wood, etc. I use stick on velcro. The glue on these are super powerful and they are a b'ch to get off, but it holds the pans in rather well. Thanks for another fun video.

I do the same thing. The little magnets are great. The only problem is if you color contains metallic particles or is a mineral based paint, like hematite, you may find the magnet and the paint want to play around with each other and leave funny swirls or lumps in the half-pan.

I like the Mijello pallets, but if you only put small amounts of paint, some of them come loose and rattle around in there. I love assembling custom pallets. It’s a whole separate hobby. As others have said, I have started putting magnets in my pans before filling with paint. It has worked quite well with metal tins so far. I laminate my swatch charts that stay in my tins. The backside can be used for mixing in a pinch.

I use this type of pallette also, and when I make my color swatch sheet (to fit under the clear plastic piece), I laminate it. Invariably, some paint will seep under the clear plastic but laminating the chart keeps it clean.

I get the tiny magnets that are pretty strong, put them in the pans, then cover them with the paint from watercolor tubes. The ones I get from Magnet Baron are the strongest I have found. I use them in my junk journals a lot :) AnaMaree

Quick question- my water colours shattered into pieces after they were dry in the pan. I am beginner, so I don’t know why. Is it paint quality? Age? Is there something I can do to prevent it?

I had the same thing happen with Reeves watercolour. Real watercolours don't usually dissolve into flakes like the Reeves did. Lots of brands don't do the disintegrating thing. Van Gogh, Daniel Smith, and most other recognised brands don't disintegrate when put into pans. Heck you can even make your own watercolours from old make-up with the right binding medium. 👍🙂

Hi Karen! Thank you for this! Very helpful! Now I understand why you turn your liquid/tube watercolors into pans. 1) But why not just buy pan watercolors in the first place? Daniel Smith (for example) makes the same colors in pans as they do in tubes or do I have that wrong? Just wondering why do this extra step and not just buy pans? 2) Are you saving money always turning tubes into pans? 3) Or is it primarily about being able to travel with your watercolors? (which I guess goes back to my question why not just buy pans in the first place)? I did read that using watercolors straight from the tubes will give you more saturated color faster/better than from a pan, but, as you say, can result in wasted paint! :-)
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 9 ай бұрын
All great questions!! It’s the other way around with Daniel Smith - they only come in tubes! Just a FEW come in pans sets, but very few! Most fine art watercolor manufacturers produce tubes. They are also more economical for the consumer!

Hi! I thought of another question (which you may cover in a different video) about when to use the various water-activated options. Of the two you used above, I am thinking you use traditional watercolor(pans) when you want to cover a large area and watercolor pencils for details/smaller areas and to help blend/shading? Does that sound right? In other, more traditional, watercolor videos-courses they seldom use other types of water-activated media! - not even watercolor pencils! Crazy! 😄
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 9 ай бұрын
For this project the pencils you see are not watercolor pencils. They are regular colored pencils, you can use watercolor pencils though as well! I wanted to texture of the pencil marks and didn’t want to activate them which is why I didn’t use watercolor pencils. Hope that makes sense!

I don't know the exact magnets Kristy used in her video, but wanted to caution folks that not all metal magnets are the same. Some will rust/corrode over time, depending on the metal or coating's ability to withstand moisture. Some anti-corrosive magnets on the side of my refrigerator began to corrode within 3 years...likely were manufactured with less pure materials than the online seller had claimed.
