Fantastic review. Three things to factor in are 1. the amount of carbon granules provided in each filter 2. the total surface area of the HEPAfilter determined by measuring the length and width ofeach plead x number of pleades and last but not least the country of origin for the filters. Some countries are known for particularly higher quality products than others. Overall, I thihk the Winix is hard to beat in that offers a satisfactory amount of carbon granules, hepa filtration area, air quality monitor, and the filters and machine are made in Korea. For under $175 it's my pick. For higher end, Austin air is powerful.

I bought the Oransi Mod. I live in a 900 sf 2 BR, separate living/dining/kitchen apartment and have noticed a significant change in air quality throughout the entire apartment. I wanted something that would clean the entire apartment if the rooms were open. I keep my 2nd bedroom and bathroom doors closed. I probably could’ve made due with the Mod Jr, but I figured I’d get better traction out of the Mod. They’re nearly the same size though and the Jr is 200.00 less. It’s up to 875 sf vs the Mod at up to $1250 sf. I never thought a purifier like this would be in my price range, but I was able to use Affirm to break the payments up over 6 mos which made it affordable and no finance charges or credit interest. Just 6 mos of interest free payments and it’s paid in full. Shipping was free and delivered within 3 days of placing the order online. I bought the package deal with a replacement filter that was on sale on their website. It’s a very simple no frills but all the thrills purifier. No app and no visual dashboard to see air quality stats. But it doesn’t need all that because it simply gets the job done. The filter is a reasonable price and doesn’t require replacement as often as some inferior overpriced models. I’m definitely happy with the purchase. The only con is that I don’t like the fabric on the exterior and had to buy a screen to place over and around it so my cat wouldn’t scratch it or run against it. I used a sheer screen and metal framed small reptile cage to cover it. You literally turn the Oransi Mod on set the level and forget it. Best purchase ever. Highly Recommend it. That said I have two of the H13 Core 300 small room Levoits that I bought several years ago and they’re both work horses and still work great. I bought a large room LV-PUR131 levoit that had very over priced replacement filters, needed 2 replaced frequently, and it no longer turned on after about a year and 1/2 of use. Tried resetting but no power at all. It went 6 mos past the warranty. Unless it’s a small unit for a room where I keep the door closed like the second bedroom and bathroom I will never buy Levoit again. They have a 1 year warranty vs the 3 year Oransi warranty. The reliability and air cleaning ability between the two brands is a no brainer.

Wow!! Thank you so much for your comment!! I was 🤏 this close to just now buying the larger Levoit + the smaller 300 for my craft room. I’ve had that brand in other completely unrelated (non electric) household things before & loved it but after reading your comment, I’ll definitely research the price of filters in Australia & closer look at the warranty periods first!! I’ve never owned an Air Purifier before so I’m heavily relying on videos (this video is excellent!!) & comments like yours to help guide me. I have 2 cats too so what you said about the one with the material cover thing is definitely something I’ll have to keep in mind too!! I don’t think my babes would scratch at it (maybe🫤) but good God that material if one brushes up against it, I can just imagine so I’ll keep that in mind too when considering… Thank you so much for your detailed comment!! I got a lot from it. You may of saved me an expensive “mistake” & helped me get my monies worth with whatever I do decide on. Question: Does the Square feet coverage really matter, can I just keep running the air purifier for a longer time to achieve results to a model that covers more Square feet?
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
In general, it matters. There is a limit to how far the air can be distributed, especially if it's a less than open space. Additionally, you also have new particulates entering your space all the time. Every time you enter / leave a room, open a door, open a window, cook, clean, etc. If you lived a perfectly sealed room then a small purifier would eventually clean it all.

Unfortunately, we aren't able to include prices and also participate in the referral link programs that support our work. Weird rule, but one we have to follow. HEPA filters generally last 8-12 months. Some may go as quickly as 3-6, some as long as 13-18 months...but in general, 8-12 is pretty typical across all HEPA filters. Your environment is the biggest determinant in how long it will last.

This is a great video. I have a Medify MA-112. Of note, the model I have is the variant with the H14 HEPA/UV light. I have a big room, and my issue with a lot of purifiers is that on the higher speeds, they are all pretty loud, and on the lower speeds they don't move a lot of air. The MA-112 moves more air on its lowest two speeds than most other models do on their highest, and so you can get a lot of filtration without a lot of sound. My big criticism of the unit is the short filter durations. They are rated only for around 5 months, and, as you would guess for a unit that uses two massive high-quality HEPA filters, expensive to replace. As you noted in your review, it is a fundamentally basic unit without advanced features, which may also turn some off given the price. That said, it is very good at doing the core thing you want in a purifier, which is high airflow + very good filters = quick reduction of particulate matter/allergens.
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Very helpful. I agree with basically everything here. Big noise = big air movement But no one wants a super loud purifier on all the time...bit of a catch 22 when it comes to air purification, especially for larger areas
@npaul4171
@npaul4171 2 жыл бұрын
@@ModernCastle Yeah, I'm not crazy about the filter change intervals, but the performance of this unit is unquestionable. In a 1,000+ square foot room, the (EPA AQI) PM2.5 level started at 105, the filter was turned on, and an hour and a half later PM2.5 levels were 0. Measurements were made with a PurpleAir PA-I. It turned pretty dirty air into exceptionally clean air in no time, and seeing the number fall (and my allergies improve) definitely justifies the purchase price and operating expenses.

@utrutr6013
@utrutr6013 2 жыл бұрын
I just checked the video again and it says the filters last 6-18 months... you are only getting 5 months consistently? Does the unit automatically say "Time to change filter'?
@npaul4171
@npaul4171 2 жыл бұрын
@@utrutr6013 Medify requires the filter be changed every 4-5 months in order to maintain the warranty (they push a filter replacement program where they autoship it every 4th or 5th month). My thought is that the HEPA portion of the filter could last closer to 12-18+ months, but if you do this, you will no longer have the lifetime warranty. I like the unit, but since getting it, one major complaint I have is that the HEPA filter and the carbon pellet chamber are integrated together to make a single filter unit. However, they obviously do not wear at the same rate. They don't have all that much carbon, and the carbon pellets probably exhaust pretty quickly. However, the HEPA filter itself is large and thick, and at the 4-5 month interval, it is probably functioning even better than when new (as HEPA filters initially IMPROVE in their filtration effectiveness over time.) But, as this is a single-piece filter, you have to replace the entire filter unit, which adds more cost. This complaint also applies to numerous other models, such as the Coway Airmega 300/400, which also use an integrated filter unit (mind you, it is rated for a longer filter change interval). Beyond that, the MA-112 is priced comparably to some high-end units that use a separate HEPA filter and a separate carbon filter (and generally contain more carbon). While I like the unit overall, and it is incredibly good at particulate filtration, this is definitely something prospective buyers should think about. Additionally, if they are really concerned about VOCs, this is (along with most of the commonly-discussed units on the market) probably not the best match.

Hi, I live in a small bungalow. Does it make sense to buy a small unit for each bedroom and another for the open plan kitchen/living room area? The replacement of filter will cost a lot combined but I'm guessing they'll be needed for each room? Thanks
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
In a perfect world, yeah...it's best to have a unit in each room. However, in a practical one, I think you can get away with just having 1 in your bedroom and 1 in your main living room / kitchen area. That's going to cover the bulk of the area you spend most of your time in. Your adjoining rooms will benefit as well.

Levoit is overall a fantastic pick! I am really happy that Molekule did not make the list because they are simply overpriced, underperforming garbage. I'm also surprised that no models from Alen made the list. Have you tested any of the Alen models?
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Levoit's really are amazing, especially for the price point. There were several other models that arguably could have made this list also. Molekule is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I know the internet at large isn't a fan, but performance wise I've always found them to be solid performers based on our standard testing series. But you're right, they are very expensive...both the unit itself and the replacement filters. Ultimately, their high price point is what kept them off the list this year. Regarding Alen, we haven't tested any Alen's yet. But hoping to later this year. I know many people swear by them.

Perhaps would've been good to include an aesthetics mark, that's important to me. I'm wondering how these were tested in practise, surely if they were all tested in the same room one after another, the results would become less & less accurate, as the air became cleaner & cleaner from the previous tests, so by the end the last model had almost nothing to clean?!
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
Tested in the same room over a period of many months / years. If the current air quality in the room isn't sufficiently bad enough we'll add particulates to the space (usually smoke) so it has something to purify. Then we turn the purifier on high, leave it on for an hour, and take measurements before / after. In my view, the most important factor is the level of PM2.5 / PM10 that the purifier is able to get the air quality down to. In 1 hour, most of these purifiers on high mode are able to fully cycle that air numerous times. As a result, if there are still particulates floating after 1 hour it is absolutely the fault of the purifier.

I will agree Dysons are on the more expensive side. But at least in terms of purification performance, they are as good as just about any air purifier. Both PM2.5 and PM10 are in the 0.1 to 0.3 range across their range of models, their oscillation and airflow give them a coverage area of 800 square feet (in the 4th generation models), and they are well respected as a brand for their quality (both in terms of air purifiers and other products). If the house is new, you may also want to consider substantial carbon filtration because the house is offgassing VOCs, and this can make asthma and allergies MUCH worse (I was in that same situation growing up). In such a situation, AllerAir, AirPura, Austin Air, and the IQ Air MultiGas excel because they all have 10 or more pounds of carbon, which makes a much bigger difference with VOCs (downside being you will need to change the carbon filtration more often because the VOCs from your new home will exhaust it faster). In addition, you may eventually find yourself having to go to hardwood/laminate/vinyl flooring, as controlling dust mites with carpet is extremely difficult. Further, while I am guessing you have already, a mattress and pillow cover made specifically for dust mites, and laundry detergent additives for bedsheets can help a lot as well. As a kid I was in this exact same situation and it was not fun. I hope your son feels better.

I need an air purifier for a 28 foot camper to help with formaldehyde smells. Please help me find something with less than 300 sq feet that blows out the top. Thanks.

The Dyson TP09 is the only purifier I'm aware of that removes formaldehyde, but it blows out the side and is way more than 300 sq. ft.

Living in Chicago right now while we’re #1 worst air quality in the world due to Canadian wildfires. Bought my Levoit Core 300 today in-store before watching this, and I approve 100%! Never realized how captivated I’d be by air purifier data and specs. 😂 Thanks for the reassurance on my purchase. 🙏

Glad to hear the video was helpful! But sure to check that filter often. If you're dealing with wildfire smoke you may need to replace the filter far more often than you think.

Is the MA-112 UV model really worth the extra cost? UV only runs for 20min supposedly and has H14 filter that cleans better. But doesn't that mean I'll need to replace more often which means more cost? The non UV is cheaper to run long term?. It will be for large older basement. Can you help me decide? Is this the only one with lifetime warranty too? Thanks.
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
UV light is really minor in an air purifier setting, in my view. However, H14 vs. H13 HEPA filter is something. For a $100 difference I'd still go with the H13 version though. The difference in performance is going to be minor.

I live in in NYC in the dustiest apartment ever and windows along the street. I have the Coway 400. Is it overkill to keep it in the bedroom? Approx 250 sq ft. Thank you!!
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
Nah, def not overkill. With more coverage area you can keep it on a lower power setting so it's not so loud. It'll also mean you can replace the filter less often.

@@ModernCastle Thank you so much!! Ironically, I had a major allergy attack around 4:30 in the morning, and my 400 was on high. This NEVEr happens to me, but we were doing some major cleaning and moving all the furniture around yesterday. The entire day we were cleaning, and sleeping. I had the 400 on high. Do you think this was the left over dust. It really was BAD when we were moving things. Just wondering. Thank you!!

@@staceys1870 In terms of allergies (and really air quality in general), basically any high air flow HEPA 14 or higher is going to be effective. The higher the HEPA / MERV rating + higher the air flow = the more effective it will be.

Which one do you say is better? The winix 5500-2 air purifier or the blue pure 311?
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
We haven't tested The Pure 311, so I cannot say for sure on that. In any case, I expect both brands are similarly high performance. Hard to go wrong with either.

As a air purifier for a bedroom of 330 sq ft would you recommend a blueair 311auto to fit the room or go higher to the 211auto to oversize so not to run on high for lower sound while pick up is great?
@ModernCastle

I'd go 211, a little extra coverage never hurts and like you say, then you can keep it at a lower volume

Did you Test the Mi Air Purifier Pro h with CADR 600m^3? Sounds to be a good air Purifier for smokers. Sounds better than the levoit lv-h133 for me, whats your opinion?

@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested that exact model yet, but we did test the Xiaomi Pro 4 - moderncastle.com/xiaomi-smart-air-purifier-pro-4-review/#purification While the purification performance was excellent, it wasn't quite to the level of the others in this video. Though it's a really thin line of difference between them. Absolutely nothing wrong with a Mi purifier if you prefer them.

Hi, i have a question I recently just bought SHARP Plasmacluster FP - F40Y and their brand is rly popular here. So sharp claim that their plasmacluster is ozone free and certified global labs for safety, but in the manual it states that the product emits a small level of ozone that's not harmful to breath. Is it true that plasmacluster didn't produce any ozone, or if it is then is it safe to use it? Thank you

That's not a model we've tested. I don't know how it will perform or whether or not it creates ozone.

What do you think of the Dyson TP7A with Auto-React?
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
Not one I've tested, but looks basically identical to the TP04 and TP07. This whole "auto-react" just feels like they are trying to put a new new label on something that every 4th generation Dyson air purifier was already doing...sensing air quality and adjusting as needed. I like Dyson, but that type of marketing is very disingenuous.

was going to purchase the Coway that was reviewed, but was concerned about it not being ozone free like the Levoit. Is this a concern I should consider?
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
Coway says that it releases very low levels of zone, lower than the federal limits. You'll have to decide if that's safe enough for you. At least for personal use, I prefer to not use any type of ionizer.

Great review. What are your thoughts regarding the release of ozone by some hepa filtration devices?
@ModernCastle
@ModernCastle 2 жыл бұрын
HEPA filters do not release any ozone. Ionizers release ozone, which are fairly uncommon among most air purifiers. In cases where we do so ionizers they are so low power they either create no ozone or very little.
@nomad1517
@nomad1517 2 жыл бұрын
Get one with an on off option, and CARB certified. If you have asthma, avoid the ionization option. If you have strong odors you need a purifier with crap tons of carbon. Like in the lbs. Check out these: Allen, Oransi, Aeris, IQair, Austin. Dyson (yes, Dyson, trust me, they work very well) Those are your best bets from research and experience.
