When I was young, I was a little obsessed with how cool Dyson fans were. But are they actually worth that amount of money? In this relatively silly video, I'm going to compare it to my $15 Walmart fan with wind speed and sound level tests!
I also tested the Dyson WITHOUT the Air Purifier, video here: • $449 Dyson Fan vs. $15...

Ok so a mile is 5,280 feet so 6.5 mph. And 3 feet away is 36 inches. Also, the average indoor temperature is about 73 degrees Fahrenheit so take that into account as well for your indoor speeds.

This is a GREAT review, and proof that just because it looks cooler and costs more money doesn't mean it's better. We got our Dyson Pure Hot + Cool because it did everything (heating, cooling and air purification) - and got it at Costco for almost half the price of what it retails for. So it was a more worthwhile (albeit still overpriced) investment. It's come in handy when the office gets a little colder in the winter than the rest of the apartment, and I wouldn't trade it for the world now as it starts getting warmer and my pcs, and what have you warm up the room even quicker. But again, although I'm happy with it overall, it doesn't mean you can't get numerous products that do all these things separately for much cheaper, and just swap them out throughout the year.

Got one of these from Costco. Returned it after a few months. We hated it. Dyson products are insanely overpriced and usually don't last long. Every dyson product I've had has broken. Had bad air flow out of the box. The filters on our fan clogged up before they were supposed to be replaced and then the air would barely flow at all. The filter replacements are also 80 bucks a pop.

In an effort to stop people from all commenting the same thing, here's a list of frequently commented things and my response to them: *Comment:* You're comparing an Air Purifier to a fan. That's like comparing an apple to an orange. *Response:* Dyson markets this product directly as the "Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifying Fan." The box is plastered with phrases like "Cools you in the summer," or "powerful air projection," along with all of their purification branding. Consumers that go to the store to buy one of these are looking to buy a product that works well as both an air purifier AND a fan. If the Pure Cool purifies the air just fine but is completely inferior as a fan, then it is a poor design and consumers should simply buy a fan and a purifier separately instead of spending over $600 for an inferior product. Also, I just made a follow up video with the AM07 fan, one without the purifier: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXOWp5J4q9l1i9E *Comment:* The Dyson will last much longer as it has a brushless motor. *Response:* True. But you could buy several cheap fans and replace them as they wear out and still have saved hundreds of dollars. *Comment:* A 10dB difference is ten times louder in a technical sense, but humans don't perceive that large of a difference. *Response:* Also true. We perceive it to be about twice as loud. But that's still significantly louder than the cheap fan. *Comment:* You should have compared the cheap fan with the AM07 Dyson fan that doesn't have a HEPA filter restricting its air flow. *Response:* This was the only fan at my local store, so it was the one I tested. I think the point I was trying to make about the efficacy of this particular Dyson fan still stands, but if Dyson is confident that one of their other fans is able to beat up some cheap fans in a wind speed test, they can send over one and I'll shoot another video with more tests.

What a great video, I bought a Dyson fan about 6 years ago becuase it was on special. I drove home plugged it, unplugged it, drove back and returned it… finally understanding why it was on special. It was R5000 at half price at the time, and I bought a replacement fan, for R600… I still have my El Cheapo, works like a charm and have never even changed the batteries on the remote…. It is unfortunate because I wanted to need the Dyson :-)

One more comparison to make: Plug them into a watt meter, and I'll bet you'll find, that the Dyson "Air Multiplier" will use more power per CFM of air flow. Again, that difference in power will probably be less, than powering up both the conventional fan AND an air purifier. The Dyson might actually be more efficient than running both other less expensive units. Note, that for every watt consumed by ANY electrical appliance, there is ~3.4 BTU's of heat dissipated. The less power your air circulating equipment uses, the less temperature rise in the room!

A change of 10 db does indicate 10 times the power, but humans do not perceive that as 10 times the volume. For practical purposes, a change of 1 db is approximately the smallest perceptible change in sound volume. It takes doubling amplifier power to raise speaker volume by about 3 db. To produce an apparent doubling of volume, the amplifier power must be multiplied by 10.

Also on youtube, CBC made a air purifier report and bought most brands, Dyson, germguardian, blue air, levito, Honeywell, and some other brands I can't remember. Turns out blue air won overall. But they also made a cheap air purifier from a box fan and taping it into an air filter. The cheapo-made air purifier outperforms Dyson which was the most expensive brand they tested. Save your money and don't believe the hype with Dyson. CBC interviewed Dyson engineer to explain themselves and it didn't look good for them.

Your testing is a bit flawed on the first test. Wind speed is a poor measure for the effectiveness of the fan, air volume would be much better. A better measurement would be cfm (cubic feet per minute or the metric equivalent). Think of it this way, a bullet travels fast but won't destroy a house, a car on the other hand travels much slower but will destroy a house. Speed is not everything. The sound level is inexcusable and the price is still ridiculous.

I enjoyed your video. A few things to note. For dB ratings +3dB is technically 2x louder but to our ears +10 dB is perceptively 2x louder. For windspeed you need to seal the fans to the air speed tester. The way you measured the airflow is like using a cup to measure how much water is dumped out of a small bucket vs large bucket. You can easily miss a lot of water if your cup isn't capturing everything. Last thing is Dyson would have a brushless motor vs the Walmarts brushed motor. What that means to the consumer is the brushes wear away over time getting louder and slower on the Walmart fan over time. The Dyson should easily outlast the Walmart fan by 4x so 20 years vs say 5 years. Your conclusions still stand and the Walmart fan is a much better value and quieter. Thank you for sharing.

I've had that exact Dyson fan/air purifier for almost 2 years now. It's run continuously in air purify mode that whole time and it's developed a strange irritating noise that comes and goes. I also have a couple other air purifiers and I think they are doing about the same job but more silently. One thing I dislike about the Dyson filter design is all the plastic built into the filters compared to other filters that are only made of filter material.

I own one and yes in the beginning i was surprised how much more powerful my old fan was but after using it for a couple months realized that for some odd reason, the air that it blows feels somewhat cooler than the old fan and the fact that you have such a large range of speeds, it makes it so nice to have nice cool air blow at you so quietly and still keep you pretty damn cool. Older fans would just feel exactly the same regardless of which speed u used. So for me its amazing and i love it. Not to mention all the features and wireless control and air filtration

I think you're missing any measurements regarding total air volume being moved. Not too sure how this would be measured, but pure fan speed might not be the best way to measure. For example, if I had a 1" diameter fan that managed to make a 20mph gust, and a 20" diameter fan that *only* made a 5mph gust, I'd still have a larger volume of air being moved by the larger one (probably).

I'm not comparing an air purifier to a fan. I'm comparing a fan with an air purifier to a fan without one. If an integrated air purifier makes it a fan so inferior to the point where even the cheapest fans in the world can outperform it, then it's a poor design.

@@MarkSpurrell Yes and I’m pointing out that by the fundamental concept of filtration there will always be a impact in airflow, as such a test based on airflow will always be biased regardless of design to the item without. The only way to correct for this would be for the Dyson to dramatically increase power and thus noise which would bias the second test.
@MarkSpurrell
@MarkSpurrell 3 жыл бұрын
You're correct! Not disputing that at all. But the whole point of this video is to demonstrate that you don't always get what you pay for. One of the most important elements of this product (the ability to cool you down) is drastically inferior to other products on the market that can be had for much cheaper. The wind speed test was what I used to show that in the simplest way possible. The reason as to why the Dyson performed worse is largely irrelevant to the end user.

@@MarkSpurrell Exactly and that’s why I’m saying that you should be comparing it to the standard fan Dyson version as that’s the one people should be buying if the important element to them is being cooled down. i love how they always called it a bladeless fan, when infact it has blades its just inside the base and pushes the air up into the exhaust chambers (although iirc its a squirrel cage fan so not the type of blades like a normal box/desk fan but more like the ones found in cars and hvac units)

Measurement of Wind Speed not an accurate way to compare the fans. It is not how fast a fan can move air that matters, BUT how MUCH air can it move. This would be much harder to measure without more equipment. Just by looking at the fans, it seems that the Dyson moves a larger "stream" of air than the Walmart fan.

For me personally Dyson is one of those brands that is more about design and name brand equity. Meaning that's what you are paying for. Sure ...they are well made and have some nice features. But none of that is worth what they are charging imho. There are plenty of well made products by other brands with nice features at significantly lower prices. Plus you are paying for their expensive marketing. Thus there is no good reason to buy Dyson unless the design and being able to show off that you have a Dyson are what is most important to you.
@AdmiralValdemar
@AdmiralValdemar 3 жыл бұрын
In terms of their vacuums, they absolutely have no equal, though. And, as pointed out here, the Dyson Air Multiplier is _not_ a simple fan. It also purifies air and has multiple other features that enable it to filter the air at a good rate. So yes, next to a basic fan, it isn’t the same. But that’s like saying your Toyota Hilux is a better car because it does better off-road than a Ferrari Enzo.
@Sabundy
@Sabundy 3 жыл бұрын
@@AdmiralValdemar well...actually a Toyota Hilux can be considered a better car in terms of cost to value ratio. A Ferrari is simply faster. What else? And it has a brand equity that is good for showing off/displaying wealth. None of these things make a Ferrari "better" than a Toyota Hilux. Which one will last longer, give better value in terms of the money spent, and has more uses? .....not the Ferrari is it? The issue isn't that Dyson products are not good. Or that there is a quality issue. It's a question of the value relative to the price. You say it's an air purifier too. So what? You could buy a cheap fan which will get the job done at a fraction of the cost...as he clearly demonstrates in the video. And with that left over money get an air purifier that's made purely to be an air purifier. And does so better. That particular Dyson in the video is not considered one of the best in terms of how much it actually cleans the air. And you would still have money left over. So how does the Dyson justify it's price? That's the question and the issue. It has to be doing something so unique, different or of such high quality to make the price worthwhile. Is that Dyson either the best fan or the best air purifier on the market? And that was the question he set out to answer in the video. And as for the vacuums being second to none........again.....I don't doubt that they are damn fine vacuum cleaners. However .....it's still a vacuum cleaner. Are you saying I cannot find ANY vacuum that would satisfy me in terms of simply sucking stuff up well? That wouldn't cost that price? I doubt it. Again......it's a brand, a design, and showing off equity that you are buying just as much as you are a good vacuum cleaner. For me personally I would rather not spend the money on those things and just get a vacuum that does what a vacuum does well because ....... It's a fucking vacuum cleaner. I don't need it to have a snazzy design, or a name brand to show off to anyone. I just need it to suck things up relatively well.

@@Sabundy The case with the Dyson fan I would agree with, given an air purifier and a cooling fan can be had for far less. But in the vacuum space, you are way off base. The next closest competitor, Shark, basically copies Dyson designs and has been taken to court for trying to falsely claim they offer superior specs. This is very much like the Mac vs. PC thing, where typically people think a Mac is "just an overpriced computer", which completely misses the point about the quality and ecosystem. Yes, anyone can just get a Windows PC for a couple hundred quid, but it will assuredly not have the longevity nor build quality or components of even the cheapest Mac. And any decent Windows device is in the same ballpark for cost anyway. The Dyson vacuums have the best battery life AND suction capability. They brought about the soft roller for hard wood floors, a solution to a problem no one in decades thought of. And they pioneered the cordless designs that can replace the mains powered ones. They didn't invent cordless vacs, but in the same way Apple didn't invent the smartphone or MP3 player, they perfected a design that won over many people. Having gone through several lesser vacuums over the past decade, I can safely say that the Dyson was worth the cost by virtue of having spent what I paid for it over the years on trash designs half as powerful and convenient. But I'll be sticking with my £40 Honeywell fan for the time being.

Since the Dyson fan is a dual-function device and the other fan is only performing one, it would only be fair to compare the standard fan to a Dyson unit that is a fan only. I agree that the most expensive is not always better, but the two items you are testing are not on the same playing field.

to be fair, moving a bunch of air through a filter, having very user-friendly software to change anything on the fan, detector and tracker for your air quality, all seeable on an actually useful mobile app, a machined aluminum controller for the fan if you're not into their app, along with a very nice looking and solid metal frame vs a fan that has 3 speed settings is not just a matter of airspeed and loudness and also I understate how hard and loud it is to move air through a filter
