Great information. One suggestion. Pulling the weight with the rubber band, through one time is called a clove hitch. Pull it through two times for a double clove hitch. Keep the wraps in line, will give a better grab on the leader.

You can also allow the line to slowly pay out through your fingers after hitting the bottom when drifting. This gives you a better chance at catching the larger mutton. When they bite they "run off" line and your spool will audiably speed up. Engage and crank quickly till you come tight. The run off is why I love fishing for the muttons

I been using ur rubber band idea for a long time if u remember and it changed the game for me. As a slow trolling down rigger and for bottom fishing.
