Those raids were either successfull for the Russians or went really poorly if the Byzantines had Greek Fire. However starting from the 10th century, the Russians and Byzantines were usually allies against the Bulgarians and the various Steppe peoples.

Basil didn't do anything except displaying pettiness for the fact that the Bulgarians killed his close companion and almost killed him. The Bulgarian Empire was already wrecked by the Rus invasion and sack of the capital, immediately followed by a Roman one by John Tzimiskes. Basil was simply feeding on a carcass
@tylerellis90973 күн бұрын
A Carcass that attacked him first in 976 and managed to full annex Serbia extending Bulgarian control further west than it ever been and even managing to be the only Bulgarian ruler to take Dyrrachium. Samuel took power in a region untouched by the Byzantines with a secure power base and against a weaker Emperor would have won. Basil II had the Superior wealth, manpower and supporting generals but had to deal with a civil war and invasions from the Fatimids and Georgia. It was his superior strategy and determination that led him to victory and even then at great cost/ time only winning in his life time due to the death of Samuel.
@johnxina89543 күн бұрын
@tylerellis9097 You seem to be very confused about that time period, so let me give you a lesson. The Romans paid the Kievan knyaz Svetoslav to attack Bulgaria in the back, and after he sacked the capital, the Romans took an easy opportunity and occupied the essential Bulgarian territories of what is today Moesia and Dobruja. Samuil wasn't even Emperor at that time, and he didn't attack anyone. He counter attacked. But by that time, the Bulgarian Empire was literally headless. It lost its capital and its entire eastern half. The fact Basil managed to lose so much against him is astonishing. For example, at Trajan's gates, when he was nearly slain by the Bulgarians. And yet, despite being a crumbling empire and despite the Romans being free to diverge all their power against Bulgaria, because they were done with the Arabs, Samuil managed to conquer back some of the old territories, conquer new ones and on top of that destroy and annex Serbia who was again bribed to fight Bulgaria in the back. In the end, Basil, after decades of fighting, lost one of his closest friends to the Bulgarians, so when he captured 14,000 Bulgarian soldiers, he decided to display his barbarism against them. Funny enough, he never actually defeated his rival in the war. Samuil died of natural causes years before it ended. So I'll always be amused how are there people who elevate Basil II when all he did was struggle against a dying empire, already falling apart because of Svetoslav's successes and John's treachery.

Belisarus actually completely defeated the Ostrogoths. And conquered all of Italy. But when he left again to later fight against the Sassanids. The Ostrogoths were able to rebel successfully. From what i understand an semi independent emir controling Malatya on the border with the byzantines had been in conflict for years as he attempted to push into byzantine holdings. The emir by the name of Umar Al-Aqta was very powerful thanks to distance from the center of islamic power and was considered one of the greatest threats to the byzantines on there eastern border, Umar initaly overcame byzantine resistance to his invasion reaching the black sea only for a byzantine army lead by the brother inlaw of the Emperor to encircle him near the Lalakon river leading to his defeat and death in battle. The reason the battle is so important despite seeming minor is that it stabilisted the border with the arab caliphates and allowed the byzantines to secure Anatolia. Also without arab pressure the byzantines managed to overcome the bulgarians leading to the latters conversion to orthodoxy and there coming into the byzantine sphere of culture

Otherwise, Hungary defeated the Byzantines once or twice in the 11th century
@tylerellis90973 күн бұрын
@ bro that’s cope Byzantium beat Hungary fair and Square under John and Manuel even when United, both the Royal force under the king and the noble forces coalition. The only noteworthy event in the 11th century was that the Hungarians managed to annex Sirmium and then Belgrade after a hard fought siege in 1071 against the local Byzantine garrison but only kept Sirmium and left Belgrade the next year after being paid a compensation. An event caused by Pechenegs raiding Hungarian territory from Byzantine territory. I wouldn’t say Hungary was the easiest foe but they were never a significant threat for Byzantium and often an ally. Magyars raided everyone and raids are raids. When it came to war they allied with Byzantium against Bulgaria in the 900s which resulted in their migration to Pannonia.

Wait a minute. Hold up. How...what... What are you?? Seeing quite possibly the biggest enemy of Orthodox Christianity put right beside a picture of Christ is incredibly cursed. So, pray tell how it came to be. I don't mean to be offensive or anything but what really is going on. How can an orthodox Christian put the flag of Turkey in their PF
