In this video I share with you the Best and Worst Toyota and Lexus Models for reliability. I work on various Toyota and Lexus models every day at my Toyota and Lexus speciality shop and the best models are the models that I rarely see come in for actual repair, they almost always come in for maintenance.
And then there are some models that are always in the shop for heavy repairs and repeated issues that sometimes seem never ending.
Disclaimer: Some of the models listed might offend some folks that own them. That is not the intent. If your car was listed as a worst model or not mentioned at all, it doesn't mean it's not good, it means you have done a good job taking care of it hence why it has worked well in your case and that makes me happy as majority of the models in the worst category are a result of neglect for reasons unknown.
Please consider a pre purchase inspection or heavy research into a model before buying it then finding out you didn't buy a good one. Spend majority of your research, inspection and investigation prior to buying the car, not after you've already bought it. I hope this video helps folks with the tough market in 2023 of lack of good cars to buy and inflated pricing.

this is too true. as exciting and fun as cars are growing up dreaming of bmws and benzes, after owning one or two and anticipating every couple of months spending thousands of dollars and living in fear not knowing what the next light is gonna be on, it is not worth it as an older person. You have too much going on to be worried and spending on cars. buy once, cry once.

German cars (except Porsche) are exciting to drive but After 5 years old and/or 50k + miles they will bankrupt you. My 2002 Lexus ES300 maybe “boring” to most people but at 176k miles it’s as reliable as anything on the road today. I replaced all 20 year old OEM parts (starter, alternator and struts) and now it rides like new. It will last me another 176k miles with proper maintenance !!

@@TheCarCareNut Excellent video as always. I really enjoy these types of videos and your experience based opinions. With that said, maybe you can help clarify something. You stated the 10-14 4runner and fj 4.0 engine being bulletproof. However, the 10-15 Tacoma engine is susceptible to head gaskets and oil leaks. Aren’t these engines identical? I can’t imagine Toyota putting slightly different versions of these engines in essentially the same chassis during the same years. I appreciate your feedback and keep up the great work!

Always very informative as usual. Live in the rust belt, literally 3 blocks due NE of your shop & here has been my Toyota/Lexus experience. Had an 07 ES350, did the routine maintenance, kept it clean & never had issues. Only saw the dealer for recalls, otherwise everything was performed in my garage. Kept it for 12 years. Presently have a 17 RX350 & 18 GS350; to date both are performing similar to ES. Have been performing the maintenance, keep them clean (top & bottom) & thanks to your videos, look out for many pointed out items. Most definitely concur with early Rav4 issues. Owned a 06 & never had one with so many factory recalls & mechanical failures. Had the V6 model & taking care of it didn't matter; had an early water pump bearing failure, muffler rusted through at the top in 4 yrs (integral w/ the cat convertor & covered by the exhaust warranty), rear diff coupler failed (just before the special diff warranty expired), had a rear coil spring break, and many more I can't remember.

Given the thousands of car repair workshops, you deserve some official consumer group recognition for being the first (as far I'm aware) to inform the consumer. This video alone has probably made some people stop and rethink a purchase decision and saved them at lot of heartache. It's good to remind people that some Toyota owners and neglect are the main cause of issues. Imagine if a manufacturer decided to promote taking care of their products. I guess the commercial benefits of obsolescence is just too lucrative. Great public service broadcasting here AMD, can you imagine this video if you were a BMW specialist, you would need a whole library of videos with one per model 😂 Thank you.

So useful. Thank you. As an on-and-off Toyota owner for more than 40 years, almost everything you said rang true to me. The only exception was the the Lexus RX... our 2018 developed a shocking list of issues in less than two years. I'd literally never had to 'repair' a Toyota product before. I ended up throwing myself on the mercy of the local Toyota dealer and going back to a 4Runner.

Great video, AMD! I feel like this is something that's generally only known by enthusiasts and those in the industry (I'm grateful for having worked in dealers quite a bit myself). One vehicle I'm surprised you didn't mention, and am curious on your thoughts - Lexus HS. Don't they experience a lot of the oil burning issues due to the old piston ring design, as well? I had no problems finding a good one, just by reading the reviews on Yelp, especially the negative ones. You have to filter out the guys who are just cranky, but any systemic problem comes out. As a result, I have a mechanic who advises against things I think the car might need. "Wait for it to get worse, there's no point spending the money just yet." Or "This car is a goner. Don't put any more money into it, apart from oil changes."

I have owned my RX450h (hybrid version of the RX350) for 5 years and has been very reliable. However, this year I experienced an issue that, it turns out, is quite common. The front suspension top mount bearing failed. Lexus dealer quoted c. £2,000 for the repair! Unlike other manufacturers, Lexus don't list the top mount as a spare part and, instead want to sell you the complete strut assembly! Fortunately I found a local mechanic who will remove the leg, separate the top mount, then passes it to an engineering neighbour to remove and replace the bearing. They then reassemble the suspension. Total cost £270! If you aren't local, the engineer offers a same day turnround postal service if you send him the top mount. Cost just £75.

I bought a 14 LS 460 F Sport (cue the tar and feathers from AMD) last July that the Carfax had shown a steady history of being serviced on time. I knew going in that brakes and tires would wear faster and be more. Got it with 119k miles and had all the fluids done soon after as the they would be due. So far with the about 8000 miles I've put on it it's been great. Comfy, all the features and I'm getting about 18-19 mpg in town which really isn't awful for it's size and power.

Congrats on your 1 year anniversary, AMD. This is by far the greatest car video on KZbin. One question about the 2016-2017 Tacoma: the leaking of coolant or oil is for 4cyl or V6 or both?
@Makemysammich23

V6 coolant leak rear of engine cause it’s plastic … and timing cover oil leak. Had the pull engine to fix mine. Had both issues. Been fine other than that.

@the car care nut Excellent video as always.

What a great video. I have owned 5 Lexus RX 350 Lexus and they are truly good cars and as I see changes coming, such as the engine, I hope they don't go down in reliability. Thank you so much for your honesty and commitment to the Toyota community

My only complaint about my 2018 lexus RX is the shifting when Ive turned onto a road with a slight hill from a stop. When going up the hill, the RPMs go up and down trying to find a gear. I either have to put it in sport mode or really lean on the acceleration so it finds a gear better. I bought it certified and the dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong. Wish i could figure out how to fix it. Congratulations on the 1 year anniversary. Love the channel, Im learning so much from you!

Toyota's transmissions are notorious for having "character." That's just the way they are. Luckily it doesn't affect their longevity. The 5-speed in my 2006 Highlander V6 AWD does weird things too and it's still chugging along with no signs it's going to ever stop!

My 2019 RX had the same issue going up on a slight incline. It got to a point that when it jumped into gear it would kick. Three times the dealer said that they could not find the problem. Fearing the transmission would eventually give us problems, I traded it in for a 2023 ES350 F-Sport. No more transmisión issues!

@@hawknews8503 Cars aren't either "working" or "broken." That's what people fail to realize, thinking a warranty is going to save them. With complex modern cars, there are many annoying issues that can ruin the ownership experience where the "dealer will not find problem" unless something is completely broken/failed.

@@MikeKayK I noticed on my Lexus Es 330 I bought (2004). The car accelerates kind of slow on the highway. And the rpm would go up to 3 at certain points. Should I be concerned. Or do they just accelerate really slow?

When purchasing a used Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid... how strongly do you suggest getting a "Stress Test" for the battery before purchasing? Do you feel this should be a common thing for a seller/buyer to do before purchasing whether it's from the dealer or private party? Love your channel, sir! Thank you so very much!

I have a suspicion that some increased neglect for the late 2000s year models was because of the recession, most people were probably trying to spend their money elsewhere.

I got a 2010 FJ cruiser. Just maintenance on it so far, and hitting 60,000 miles. Absolutely love it. It would be totally impractical with lift and mud tires on it, except I live in rural area and overland with it in the Patagonia. I bought it from my brother that lived in a city when it had 25,000 miles on it, so basically it only got driven to Toyota for sevice and weakened trips. No rust issues where I live. Totally planning to keep it for the rest of my life. owners regularly get 500,000+ miles on them, which probably more than I will put on it in my lifetime.

Love your channel. I wanted to buy a new Toyota Corolla but the dealers had none for sale. Also, Most Toyota dealers are still adding mark ups. I ended up going with a 2023 Honda Civic Sport. Got a fair deal with no mark up. I really wanted a Corolla but not playing the dealer games. Thumbs up on this video.

🙏 OMG! This Car Care Nut channel deserves a Gold Medal 🏆🥇 for being so honest & detailed in advicing customers on the Con & Pro of owning a Toyota or a Lexus! We are now a little bit more knowledgeable of choosing a car based on its engine block & transmission type & year & where they're being manufactured , instead of just based on the brand or model! Like SONY's audio products are much better now since SONY is relocating many of their China based assembly plants to other countries with better IP Protecting Enforcement , Craftmanship & Supply Chain reliability , & we think the same goes with Toyota & Lexus' vehicles! 🙏 Thank You So Much Car Care Nut channel for the honest tutorial! 🌷🌿🌍💜🕊🇺🇸🇯🇵
