Was both blessed and cursed to be in the 82nd. Some of the most motivated Jo's, but most of the time, they end up broke form all the unit runs and jumps. Also, we end up with ALOT of Ranger and SF wash outs, so yeah, everyone is at least motivated enough that they're all willing to try and go above and beyond.
@RoboDanny5 ай бұрын
Yeah true, about same sentiment with my time in the 173rd
@1chumley15 ай бұрын
The 82nd is a feeder unit for SF. You either go SF or ETS. Very few want to hang out there long because it will break you eventually. Either physically or mentally. I was there for a couple of years and I ain't been right since.
@JavierCastillo-vc8ih25 күн бұрын
@@1chumley1 What an ironic tragedy that the same unit is both a feeder unit for Ranger and SF AND where all the Ranger and SF washouts go. I can picture both happening: being a young go getter wanting to be SF and seeing and talking to an SF washout. Also being an SF washout and meeting a kid that was once just like you before you failed. Just wow.
@1chumley125 күн бұрын
@@JavierCastillo-vc8ih It's interesting how Ranger Battalion guys also have a tough time getting selected for SF if they decide put in a packet. Even super squared away, tough Rangers are often not selected. Many of those who wash out are ready to turn right around and give it another shot. In my experience, company leadership is not always cooperative when it comes to putting in a SF packet, either. The 82nd has its own mission that they need their Joes to train for.

You’re right, it’s closer to Canada than anything. Maybe 30 miles south of the Canadian border on Interstate 81. 10th Mountain was okay, but I was glad to get out. A whole lot of field exercises, plus go to NTC or JRTC between deployments. The road marches jacked up my knees and back too.

3rd ID is truly a pathetic mess. The fattest soldiers I met were from there. Their brigade were the “hosts” (every div takes a turn) for our little post in Poland and they tried making other units learn their ridiculous “I wouldn’t give a bean to be a fancy pants marine” song, tried making us learn their history, and even put their little broken TV logo posted in all buildings. I had a feeling this is how they were and I was 100% right. Some units are just very predictable

I've been to 3ID for a few years and it is definitely just....a pathetic mess. The people are run into the ground by leadership, the barracks are some of the worst in the army, non existent dfacs, coming back from rotations to mold, a lot of suicide, rampant apathy and drinking culture. There is definitely a lot of thicc bois at 3ID, and I feel it's from having a dfac that is in shambles, crazy hours, depression and drinking, and that people just end up ordering food constantly because the dfacs are either not open, trash, or a combination of everything.

However to OPs point, 82nd is much more likely to get deployed

Hey Danny check this out, I served in the 1st Ranger Bn when it was on Ft. Stewart, before we moved to HAAF in Savannah, then I PCS'd to the 1st Bn 509th Airborne in Vicenza Italy, I returned stateside to Ft. Campbell and lucked out into the Pathfinder Co, while it was still on jump status. I also spent 2 years instructing at the original Air Assault School, I then returned to Vicenza with the 4th Bn 325th Airborne, I retired E-8 with the 82nd, all 11-Bravo grunt time, the only " LEG" time I did was basic and ait at FT. Benning, Tabbed with 3 types of wings, CIB with star and 3 PH awards, INFANTRY ( RANGER) AIRBORNE all the way, I did all of that because my Drill Sarge in basic was 173rd in Vietnam and I wanted to be just like him !!!!

2nd ID has a great balance of awesome duty stations and not super hoah unit. Korea was amazing. 2nd Cav Rgt in Germany, not the best part of Germany but still being in Europe is also great. Assuming you’re interested in travel. I care more about duty station then unit. Something is always gonna suck about the unit, and you’re always gonna hear someone say how great it was at their last unit. I focus on what I can do away from the unit, for fun, food, travel. That’s what guided my decisions in duty station.

Pt.2 after most of my buddies either quit or go awol(one is still in Mexico hiding), I ran a ton and secured a spot in airborne school. Went to 82nd, Panther brigade, 1/505PIR. I show up while my platoon in the field. They bring me out there and I’m in my Marne Standard(knee pads, elbow, eye pro, ear pro, full battle rattle…) I show up and feel like an idiot. In five minutes I lost my helmet, im in my pc. lost my blouse, slick iotv(no side plates) over T. Unblouse my pants, no knee or elbow pads. Big boy rules out here. I loved it there! Yes, we still had bad days but after my time with Tird ID I learned how to love what others hated. Looking back I loved both of my units. I miss my friends. It was best time of my life. There was no better feeling than coming back from the field after two weeks chugging a monster, cleaning guns, Bradley’s, turning in sensitive items and passing out drunk in the barracks…

Baker Boyz(step kids abandoned at benning), the Audie Murphy company. we were also known as cocaine company… There was two hollywood movies made about my company “To hell and back” about ww2 exploits of Audie Murphy, and “In the valley of Ellah” with Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron. In late 2003 a bunch of our dudes murdered one of their own and made a mess… Hollywood decided to make a movie about it and it was one of the first films that talked about PTSD. My time there was rough. Marne standard and endless smoke sessions mixed with 15 minutes prior to 15 minutes prior. Getting released daily after 18hundo or later…
