Favourited this video. I have been collected resources for years with the hope of someday putting together a 1430 German harness, and there were makers in this video that I had never even heard of (namely a few of the ones with a Facebook page)! I hope that the armourers out there only continue to rise in skill and historical accuracy as time goes on - we must keep this amazing and ancient craft alive!

I think that it should also be noted that if you're getting a full plate harness made then travel expenses might have to be factored into the cost as well. Because plate armor needs to be individually fitted to the wearer you might need to visit the armorer at least once to either get measured for your armor and/or visit the smith for a test fitting once he/she has everything roughly made to make sure that everything fits as it should and make adjustments/corrections accordingly. I believe that the Beige One posted a video showing him at his smith's shop doing an first fitting test of the unfinished pieces of his armor.

Thanks for this great video! :) It's really useful! :D I've recently ordered my very first sword (a schiavona from Pavel Marek), and I will buy a custom stiletto from Roberto Saporiti in June. I also still want a gladius, and I'm saving for a lorica segmentata by Fabrica Cacti (also thanks to you!). However, another thing on my wish list is a proper sleeveless mail top to wear underneath my clothes, and some medieval protection for my legs and stuff, so this was very useful for me :)

This is just a very small selection in a sea of fantastic craftsmen around the world, so I highly encourage you all to do your own extensive research if you want something made. There are at least a hundred workshops specialising in high-end late medieval plate armour, for example.

Good stuff, Mate! One point though to your comment about Archers at Agincourt. Don't forget that this was late during the Hundred Years War, and many (not all, but probably most) of the archers at Agincourt were veterans of earlier campaigns, where they would have been able to strip the corpses of enemy soldiers (and possibly even living prisoners) of their armor, and even those without the ability to strip opponents of their armor would know other people who did strip armor off the enemy. That means that they could find armor at fairly low cost if it was previously owned, and especially if they were not particularly fussy about the fit. Ohh, and one small complaint about the video, this American can neither speak, nor read Italian, and it looked as if all of those websites were in Italian.

OMG, will your harness include a Kastenbrust or an early fluted breastplate? A ridgy/angular kettle hat? A highly rounded grand bascinet with rondels at the visor pivots? Would it include a fauld or just a maille skirt? If a fauld, then would it be lames or scales? I love this period of German armour designs!
@secutorprimus7 жыл бұрын
I like kastenbrusts a lot, and I like those rounded great bascinets. And I like rondels. Lots and lots of rondels. And probably a lame fauld, as well. This is several years off, however, so my tastes could change.

Le migliori armature in assoluto a parere mio! Anche un talentuoso armoraio come Harywald meriterebbe una menzione se si è nel mondo della rievocazione di fine 14esimo secolo. Pardon me if this has nothing to do with armor but out of curiosity, was meditation practiced in medieval Europe? Meditation is commonly associated as Asian practiced by various groups such as Samurai and Buddhists. But was it also practiced in Medieval Europe? While we're at it, were there other places meditation was practiced?
@jakevonatlas27547 жыл бұрын
Cade Thumann Think so.
@Ultramasterjedi7 жыл бұрын
Monks and priests surely would have meditated on the bible and while praying. Crusaders, knights and other pious warriors likely would have as well. But meditation in medieval Europe was not the same as in the east, mostly due to the religious differences.
@cadethumann86057 жыл бұрын
Ultramasterjedi So what were the differences?
@Ultramasterjedi7 жыл бұрын
I have very little knowledge of eastern religion or meditation, so i'm not totally sure of all the differences myself. I think in general, and I may be wrong, but eastern meditation focuses on contemplating one's self, clearing your mind and all that jazz, whereas christian meditation, which is what would've mostly been done in Europe, focuses more on the teachings of the bible (perhaps similar stuff is done in eastern meditation, again I'm unsure), and what it means, and often is just a longer, more ritualistic prayer all things considered.
@secutorprimus7 жыл бұрын
I mean, the crusaders kneeling before their swords (as surrogate crosses) could be considered a form of meditation, could it not? If not, then look to monasteries.

@duchessskye40726 жыл бұрын
Basically that knights were nobility while men-at-arms could be very rich bourgeoisie (and professional soldiers, although I haven't got the faintest clue where those fit into the feudal system). All knights that fought were men-at-arms, but not all men-at-arms were knights.

How much does stuff like this cost? Because I've went to websites like Historic Enterprises and they charge something around 18000 to 40000 (depending on the work) for a suit of full plate armour. Do these people have similar prices as well? I wonder how reenactors deal with such costs.

I have to say, for months worth of research, the video is kinda meh. Speaking from experience handling Siefert-made suits of armour (two of them), his armour is amazing, but you omitted at least three amazing armourers in Germany alone, two of them way less expensive than Markus. Chief amongst them definitely Peter Müller... you know, the guy Master Siefert learned his craft from. Also, Michael Koepff, aka. Der Micharr, makes probably the best Italian armour I have ever seen, especially if you are slender but still want to wear Italian. Yes, that IMHO includes Wasson. And he makes amazing armour for women, too! Also, René from the workshop Eysenkleyder is a staple of German armour making, whatever you might think of his surface-decoration and finishing.
