About Zeff's behaviour after learning Sanji cooked whithout his permission, you should watch that scene again. The one where Luffy tells him about it. His reaction is there, immediately after Luffy tells him that, he seems proud of Sanji. I don't know how you guys missed that.

Yes you missed something. When luffy "told on" Sanji for cooking for that man, Zeff didn't get angry. He said "He did that did he? What a good kid" as he smiled.

Yeah they sort of missed that last episode didn't they. But I remember even in the Anime Manga etc it's a little confusing zeff is so gruff at the beginning for a minute you think he's just a cranky old man. Then you see a few glimpses then the backstory.

Zeff eating his leg was adapted straight from the manga. In the anime they changed it so he loses the leg while swimming from the sinking ship.

As a Sanji fan, I always thought it was quite interesting how similar Sanji is to Luffy (having both their father figures lose a limb for them & the belief in something intangible). I quite like the idea that, while Zoro embodies the Pirate King part of Luffy's dream, that requires strength & ambition, Sanji embodies the other part, that requires a different type of strength - continuing to believe in something ethereal, despite many people challenging your dream telling you to give it up.

At the end of the scene where Luffy tells Zeff about Sanji feeding Gin, Zeff responds with "He did that huh? Well, good kid". Its not emphasized as much in LA, but Zeff and Sanji built the Baratie to feed sailors who are starving, given that they still need to maintain costs. They care very much about not wasting food. Sanji would have respected Zoro for eating the rice ball that had been stepped on.

This is late, but I generally see the anime as convenient for added details. Depth of emotional feels though? I mean yes, it has that, but the level doesn't match up to the visceral feeling of the LA (and manga), because the anime just... drags, even at its best. That feeling takes away from it all tbh

The anime takes the time to go deep in the stories, the feelings, the explanations, the bonding between the crew members and as I can see you're all for it. The restaurant was Zeff's dream after they got stranded (he talks about it in the manga flashback), he wanted people to find a place to eat at even while in the middle of the sea. Sanji felt very indebted to him and that's why he refused to leave all that time despite how much Zeff pushed him away, he felt the need to protect it, while Zeff wanted him to follow his dream. The Baratie arc was different from the manga, but the actors for Sanji and Zeff were perfect, amazing chemistry.

With Zoro, you have to remember the one friend thing and his mentor. That's all he had. Then he went out to sea and was alone. So Luffy is the first person that has LEGIT wanted to be close to him since Kuina. That's a big thing for him and he's never experienced it since he was young so it hit him hard because he avoids serious connections...and Luffy just knows it's bullshit and Zoro is accepting it.

Probably my favorite episode of season 1. I also love how they did the manga version and not the anime version (since the anime version was meant for kids and Zeff loses his leg another way and not cutting it off himself and eating it cause that would be too much for kids). Also how this whole Baratie Arc (these 2 last episodes in the live action) is totally different than in the anime/manga.

Sanji's backstory is the most manga accurate. And in the Anime was change about zeff's leg. Episode 5 and 6 are my favourite episodes. FYI for those who thought it's because 4kids cencorship: In Anime, Zeff's leg got stuck in an anchor when saving Sanji underwater. And he never said he ate his own leg. In anime what Sanji Said in Japanese Dub: "Doshita no yo? so no ashi? (What happened? Severed Leg?) Omae... Ore o tasukeru tame ni... Jibun no ashi... (You... To help me... Own leg...)". Then Sanji remembered what happened.

This is better in the live action than anime imo. They expanded it a bit more and gave more time to it. I also think it captured the darkness more than the anime does. Sanji, Brook, and Law have prob the best backstories. I enjoy all of them, but those 3 are a bit darker and show the dangers of being on the high sea.

In the manga and anime, there's not much more to how they got rescued. After Zeff finishes his speech to Sanji, he collapses from hunger, comments "I wonder how many people die of hunger, cursing the sea. If I survive this, I'd like to make a floating restaurant that could feed people on the sea." and then a ship passes by and Sanji flags it down. In one version (I honestly can't remember if it's the anime or the manga) we see aboard the ship that one of the sailors thought they heard something coming from that island a few months ago, implying that Sanji's yelling during the storm actually WAS noticed, and they came back for them, but it's unclear (and if it was the case, wtf ship, way to not come back for two months, hope you feel real bad about that).

They probably couldn’t get close to where the voice came from in a storm even if they wanted to. If their ship also got smashed up, that’s just more who drowned or were stranded. And then they probably lost the coordinates of where the voice came from after the storm passed, so they would have only managed to go back there when going along that route again. With clear skies and calmer seas, it would have been much easier to confirm if they did hear a voice calling out.

What people (not just you, but most reactors I've seen) seem to be forgetting is that pirates are _criminals_. Most pirates are like Buggy or Kuro. Luffy and the Strawhats are an anomaly, but it doesn't matter if they are, because they'll be hunted down just the same. So of course, Garp doesn't want his grandson to be a pirate.

I've heard this take before and I .. don't really agree. Most pirate captains in the show are evil but most marine commanders in the show are also evil/corrupt. Garp knows some pirates are not all that bad, and he knows Shanks is one of them. And in the manga, we see what the World Government is really like, and it's not pretty. A better explanation of Garps actions are what he hints at: he knows the world government, other pirates and life-threatening weather events await Luffy in the Grand Line and he wants to protect him from it. Also, he just doesn't like the fact they are fighting on opposite sides.

The decision Zeff made to cut off and eat his leg. I view it like this: He faught with the decision: Lose a leg, give up the Pirate life. Lose an arm, give up cooking. He chose his love for cooking over his love for Piracy. Perhaps, Piracy was just used to chase his dream of finding the All Blue. 🤔 I don't read the manga or watch the anime but I could see it with how well they did this series. Someone replied with a reason which i assume is a spoiler as to why he stopped seeking the All Blue...🤔 There be spoilers all over the place, yarrrr. ☠️

In Garp's disposition, bringing pirates to justice is his job even if you are a good pirate crew like Strawhats, you are still operating as a vigilante like Batman or Robin Hood. And as we saw in the beginning, pirates get executed. Golad Roger might not be a bad pirate but his influence and wealth is beyond what the government is comfortable with. Imagine the heartache Garp would feel if he is the one to execute his own grandson.

It’s robin for me and nami close second . Watching your mother get shot and thinking you don’t deserve to live are two of the most horryfying expiriences. Sanji’s story is extremely tragic as well but he gets closure and finds a father figure. Nami and robin just lost everything they can never regain

Yeah, I don't think they did Zoro justice in the live action. It's great, but they couldn't fully showcase what a beast he really is, which made the gap between him and Mihawk even more shocking the first time around. He was crazy in the next arc too, but the two final episodes in the LA didn't capture it too well. It's a shame, but it would've been too expensive to adapt those scenes. :')
