For all the readers wanting to know if you can fit 21700 in the BT-C3100 V2.2. YES, YOU CAN! I already did charging and discharging of about 100 cells - 21700 and so far all good.

Here are a few of my additional comments on this excellent charger, for which OPUS did so many things right: 1) OPUS makes a single-channel version of this same charger, the BT-C100, but in addition to all the same features, it also adds an optional USB input and a USB output so you can use it as a power bank if you have a lithium cell installed: 2) Both of these chargers use 12vdc inputs with 'proper' DC barrel connectors - this is mandatory in my opinion but not all vendors do this. One of the benefits is you can power this from a 12v solar bank as well as vehicles. 3) This review points out the display is backlit, another mandatory feature in my view. The OPUS displays are among the most readable LCD displays you will ever see - simply bee-u-ti-ful.

I gave your video a thumbs up. There was however one thing that you forgot to add, which is, the faster you charge the battery the quicker you degrade the battery as well. What this means is that you should only fast charge a battery IF YOU REALLY NEED IT IN A HURRY!. Otherwise you should charge the battery at 500 mA.

Michael Nager that's not true. Slower is not always better. Manufacturers of li-ion suggest a charge rate of .7C so the ideal charge rate is dependent on the capacity of the battery. Too slow can actually be more damaging than too fast as it can cause terminations to be missed along with other problems. (Edit: within reason of faster charging. I'm talking about reasonably high charge rates and not something like charging a 10440 at 2amps) If you doubt my information you can go directly to Panasonic's lithium ion website and find the information readily. Research before passing on false information.
@michaelnager6059

***** Love it when someone tells me to " do the research" because it usually means the person hasn't bothered their arse to do any research of their own. Chargers work on the principle of CC/CV (if you don't know what that is then I would suggest you do the research). When we are talking about fast charging essentially we are talking about how long it takes the battery to reach 4.2 volts and this is done at CC. The problem with this is that when the battery is reading at 4.2 volts it has not reached its full potential (or capacity) and the charging regime changes to CV, which is a charge at a much lower current The faster you charge the battery during the CC phase the less of its capacity is filled before it reads 4.2 volts and the sooner it changes to CV mode to charge the battery to it's full capacity. Fast charging a battery which is below a certain threshold of around 20% of its capacity can damage it, and the fast charge is only really good for getting you from around 25% of the capacity to 70%. If the fast charger does not have a CV component to its charging regimen then the battery will be deemed "full" at a capacity far short of the battery's potential. Charging a battery at a lower current will get you to a completely fully charged battery state faster because it will only go into CV mode a lot later in its charge cycle when the battery capacity is well over 90% full. The damage which can be done to batteries is when the charger falsely reads the charge state of the battery and then the current used is converted into heat in the battery instead of used to create a charge and this will damage the battery. Trying to fast charge a battery below a certain threshold will damage it, trying to fast charge a battery above a certain threshold will damage it. A GOOD battery charger will NEVER attempt to charge a battery exclusively at CC no matter what value of "C" you set for the charge. Next time you might want to read a sentence or two more before you tell someone to "do the reasearch" and make a complete ass of yourself.

Michael Nager you're talking like you have total control of the current and voltage on these standard chargers. No, they're mostly automated and what I said stands about choosing too low of a charging current is still worse than choosing one a little on the high side as long as you're within a certain range. And it seems you don't know what C was referring to when I said it earlier. If you're arguing directly against what the manufacturers of the battery state on top of much research and suggestion of people far more experienced on the subject than you or I then there's no sense in I continuing the conversation. Good day.

Thank you very much for your video. This charger really helped me with salvaging the 18650 batteries from dead notebook battery packs. I managed to get the bad cells separated from the good ones, get the accurate capacity and test the voltage of each battery. I bought this charger last week when I was watching your video and I managed to salvage 103 good 18650 batteries and now I can add those to my EDC kit. One thing what I don't like, is that it doesn't work via USB but I can still use my diy Lithium-Ion 18650 charger for charging my batteries on the go and the Opus for charging everything at home.

the max charge current of the charger is not 3A. the power supply is 3A but that's at 12v. you're only charging at max 4.2v so realistically the charger could deliver over 8A and still pull less than 3 from the PS. also the NIMH batteries aren't charged at those voltages. 1.2V is the nominal voltage. they're charged when to display is ~1.5-~1.6

1.5v is overcharging and damaging to a nimh aa or aaa. 1.45v should be max full off the charger.
@kdanagger6894
@kdanagger6894 5 жыл бұрын
@@practicalguy973 Peak detect (Delta V) chargers for Nickel chemistry are not concerned with exact voltages. That is why you can charge any number of series cells without explicitly limiting to a particular cell count (total voltage). Peak detect chargers look for a characteristic peak in internal resistance of the cells while being charged to determine when they are fully charged. Battery internal resistance changes over it's cycle life, and so can the fully charged voltage coming off the charger.

I've started using an external 12v from my unused Wi-Fi router and my i4 STILL gets pretty hot. Not AS hot, so anyone using them I definitely recommend using the 12v input with a seperate converter. But I'm probably still going to be adding a fan, soon as I decide how I want to mount it. Haven't solved that with one fan yet, since I'd like to also have it throw a little on the batteries as well, and not suck air (and dust) in. And eventually I will be getting a better charger, that tells me more than basically its just charged or not.

Out of curiosity, what makes the Opus BT-3100 better than other chargers like the Xtar VC4? I owned and used a Nitecore i4 mk1 from 2012-2017, often daily, and it worked great until I tried to 'modify' it to make it charge my LG V10 phone battery, which involved soldering wires onto - & + terminals on 2 bays, which worked for a year, but it died afterwards. The only downside to the i4, was the lack of an LCD screen that shows useful info, like voltage, amount of charge in mAh. Now I've got an Xtar VC4 that I've been using for 21 months without issue. But I've read quite a few peoples' posts at candlepowerforums, who say the Opus BT-3100 is the standard. Recently ive noticed the Xtar VP4 Dragon, but don't know much about it.

once the batteries/batteries are fully charged do you get a final reading of what their capacity really is? Maybe times batteries claimed to be a certain mAh but end up being way lower than advertised.
@livingsurvival
@livingsurvival 8 жыл бұрын
mAh is usually lower so I base if off of volts instead. those 18650's i had in there in the video got done a short time later and they were all at 4.2 volts. If I check the mAh it will be lower than whatever the battery is because the counter in the charger doesn't start at zero unless you discharge fully first. so that is the only way to get a more accurate number and since you don't have to fully discharge li-ion i never worry about mAh just the voltage.

Please do not charge lithium battery’s at more than 1/2 of their total capacity mah in mah or amps (mah /1000) charging a regular Samsung 25r (2500mah or 2.5 amp) battery at 2 amps will greatly reduce battery life and more likely cause the battery to catch fire and as they’re lithium these battery’s can only be extinguished by type d extinguishers (water is like petrol when they’re on fire) I know I may seem like a paranoid nut but since I’m into drones and rc cars with huge lithium battery’s I’ve seen what these things do when abused like in this video please stay safe

Hello there. at my first charge i open the opus put 4 18650 bat., push nothing button and start to charge at 500mah for 3.5 hours. after i see time goes 0 and start charge again. i put off the battieries. i read at manual that when charge fulls then opus start a new tickle charge to give 10ma more. i check my battieries and all full but didnt let complete the tickle charge. is this right? opus should stop charge when is full automatic? Also my battieres are 3000mah . the opus should write 3000mah when charge is full or use another scale ( i see it cant write 4 digits, so it will say 300mah?) Thx and sry for my english :D

I'm finding it hard to find a charger that will charge 18650 and 20700 and those are the two batteries I use the most this charger your reviewing right now on its cover does not show that it will charge the 20700 battery. So does that mean it'll charge it but it's not listed or it won't charge it at all? I had to drop down and buy the B 0-4 battery charger because it did both. Where I would have liked to have had one that individualized the statistics on the battery the testing and everything like the one you're doing. But it's hard to find one that does both types of batteries.

Jimmy Clark I have the opus by 3100 had for about a year maybe a bit less max is 21700. Its not to tight even with the golisi 21700 s I like the charger not sure of my version but no no matter what rarely will it charge to a full 4.2 no matter the battery mah or how many changing from 500 to 1000 mah. Doesn't help either. So when my tests are done on battery capacity volts reached are 4.17 to 4.18 I toss them on my d4 Nicore to finish to 4.2 volts nitecore d4 21700 s charge but its to tight to my liking.

I was wondering if the quick test mode would also work to test non rechargeable batteries (classic AA 1.5V)?

I just want to see the true mAh of a battery, as often you've seen some 18650 batteries on Ebay showing 3000, 4000 mAh while the brand name batteries only show 2400 +/-. Can this charger show me the true mAH after a battery is fully charged? Also, you mentioned a coupon code to purchase this charger, what is it?
@Schnorschel
@Schnorschel 7 жыл бұрын
Liem Nguyen Yes, the charger will display a battery's capacity, however, it will fully charge a battery, discharge it, and charge it full again, in order to do so accurately. It is the time it takes to discharge the battery in combination with the discharge current that is used to determine the battery's capacity. Apparently, measuring the time to charge a battery at a set current is less accurate to determine a battery's capacity, as there are losses involved.

I have the Goal Zero. Only problem is the proprietary USB cord and it won't charge my 18650's. The way things are progressing so fast I'm sure we will have it all soon.

Yes, look at the SoShine. I can take both 12v and USB input and they have a 1, 2, and 4 channel version. But, it isn't quite as nice as the OPUS and its discharge/cap test isn't as good - basically it only shows you mah input, rather than output. And its not as high a current. In short, the OPUS is the very best charger out there for the money. If you are willing to spent over $100 then there are a bunch of options. And why do you really need USB? Most solar banks are 12v and the OPUS takes 12v input. And if you REALLY need USB input, you can get external adapters that readily convert USB to 12v (boost converters) - I have several. This is what an 18650 power bank does - it boosts 3.7v lithium up to USB 5v, so its the same concept.

Most people prefer to charge quickly and that can cause extra heat and more damage to the battery if the charger misses termination. The Panasonic BQCC17 is a slower charger but has most optimum charge current for AA and AAA. I think all the chargers in those articles are decent except for the CC55 which can be damaging as you will see. Also if you have money to burn a professional choice for a lot of photographers for an 8 bay AA/AAA nimh charger is the Maha mhc808m.

@Schnorschel
@Schnorschel 7 жыл бұрын
Jonas Pärsson Yes, with the charge-test mode. In this mode the battery will be charged full, then discharged, then fully charged again. The time it takes to discharge at a defined current determines the total mAh, ie. the battery's capacity; that number will be displayed.

Be careful ordering LiitoKala today via Amazon. They use shady shipping practices on Amazon. My order was delay and never reflected an actual ship date via Amazon tracking. Amazon advised me it was shipped but interestingly the item went unavailable the next day on Amazon. I tried to post a one-star review and Amazon filtered it out. Amazon's review are now discredited. After several missed delivery dates and days of delayed time I ultimately asked for a refund and ordered another charger/discharger. By LiitoKala at your own risk.

Crappy review. The only reference you made to checking the battery capacity was to say "you can use quick test and get some statistics". You obviously don't understand this, so you bang on non-stop about the only thing you do understand : charging currents.
