Im about 10 hours into this game at this point. I did courier missions for a bit, then bought a fuel scoop and an adder and began to wander the galaxy aimlessly. Just from staring in awe at planets and stars, I made a couple million in a few hours. I love this game.

Hauler is my favorite low expense ship for mining and even used it for some combat before. When I restarted on Ps4 it was the first ship I went for and used it for exploration to get my first few mill.

I skipped the Cobra 3 initially. I went Sidewinder to Viper 3 and the boost speed on the Viper 3 got me out of trouble many times, from there I actually went to the Imperial Courier and with its frikken tanky shields went all the way to Master rank in Combat before I moved on :D I hated Asp, and quickly moved to Python.

I disagree about the hauler...whenever I reset, I usually pick it up early on and earn credits using it to scan the earthlikes around the bubble...it has a pretty good jump range for its low price, and cos exploration can pay reasonably well it makes a good springboard to better more expensive ships. Just don't try to use it to haul anything...dumb name. Edit: I also like the way it looks...

whithout watching any guides when i started the game simply by looking at ships stats my first ship that i bought was cobra 3 (and also there was no nostalgia involved because i never played an elite dangerus game, EVER) i grinded it out on the starting system, my secound ship was the cliper, so yeah i think i maid some prty good choices (secound ship was a cliper due to the fact that i watched a vid were the player was piloting a cliper and i just fell in love with the engine sound :X)

I went from sidewinder to hauler because I wanted more cargo after doing a couple courier missions since for some reason cargo missions greatly overpaid for a while then went to imperial Eagle for combat due to maneuverability and I read 20% surcharge as 20% discount

The Viper Mk IV isn't necessarily as good of a "beginner" ship as the ugly Cheese wedge, but it's an amazing ship to return to and fully engineer, and it ultimately surpasses the Cobra MK III in every way except straight line speed, turn rate, and some slight cargo potential. With its absurdly responsive lateral and vertical manoeuvrability coupled with some of the best acceleration and deceleration in the game, it becomes almost impossible for most NPCs to shake, meanwhile with the right build you can reach over 1000 effective MJs of shields and 4000 effective Hull with great module protection, so nobody's taking you down in a hurry - all while still having a jump range over 30ly fully fitted. When you reach the inevitable point in the game where after getting access to all ships, engineers and materials available you realise how much you despise everything about large ships and how empty owning one really feels, I suggest going "back" and engineering the Viper Mk IV, you'll never touch another small ship (not named the DBX or Vulture) again.

Also, while it might turn like shit when decked out with armor unengineered, I much rather prefer that to the DBS because I'm actually able to stay in the fight to deal decent amounts of damage whereas with the DBS I have to bail almost immediately. Haven't tried the Cobra in forever though, might have to give it a go.

Yeah the mk4 is a nice long range fighter. It definitely has its role in the lore as a tougher long range fighter. A properly engineered mk4 with full combat load out can jump about 30ly. It’s possible to fly a mk4 to beagle point.

Courier was cool, especially for small-scale combat. At least, when I used it years ago. despite it's maneuverability it just feels so weak compared to something like the Mamba. Still a cool beauty though.

I have a Viper IV with a pair of medium plasma accelerators and a set of gimballed beams in the small slot. It's like a mini Python, and is surprisingly tanky. Are there better ships? Without a question! Does it lead to some fun fights and immense satisfaction when landing a perfect pair of plasma shots on a NPC ship? You bet your vac-suited ass!

The Dolphin isn't that bad anymore, since they got rid of the slot restrictions. It's essentially a beginner explorer option instead of going for a DBX now. The selling points being that it's for those that don't like the angular look (Dolphin is a pretty cute ship) and/or the'yre willing to give up a little jump distance for a real fuel scoop.

Dolphin cant keep up with DBX at all, ESPECIALLY for new players. DBX can get ~35 Ly without engineering or stripping of parts to the lowest grade possible. Almost 40 if you strip it to the smallest and lightest parts that will keep it running, once again without engineers. This is HUGE for getting around the bubble when you are new to the game, it has every other exploration ship beat in jump distance without extensive and expensive upgrades(excluding conda for obvious cost reasons), neither the ASP nor the Krait can keep up with that. Even with half way upgraded FSD, DBX can already do almost as much distance as a min maxed Dolphin will ever be able to accomplish.

Max jump range is only important if you're going to the fringes (and in that case, wait until you at least have an Anaconda). It's like VIper III vs Cobra III... if what you want to do is just combat, Viper III is a tough ship with better hardpoint placement. But it will only really be good for combat... the Cobra III is multipurpose and the safer buy for the majority of players. And it's the same here... the Dolphin has some advantages that serve as selling features. Optional slot speaking you get an extra one over a DBX. It's like: take DBX, drop one of the size 3s to a size 2, and give it a size five slot. SIZE FRICKEN FIVE! That's huge on a small ship. The DBX would kill for a size 5 scoop for its size 5 FSD... as bad as taking a few extra jumps it, waiting can feel much worse. The real insult is that the Dolphin doesn't even need to use the size five slot for a scoop to have great fuelling because it only has a size 4 FSD. And sure, the Dolphin additionally pays in hardpoint and utility slots... but again, those don't matter for exploration. They only matter if you want to use the ship for other things like combat. And having nine optional slots is a magic number for an explorer: booster, bumper, scoop, SRV, scanner, AFMU, second AFMU (to repair the first), repair limpet controller, cargo to make limpets in. That's the full robust exploration package, and it takes 9 slots. The Dolphin can do this now. Which brings us back to my point... the Dolphin has selling features over the DBX. The DBX is a better ship in almost every way (like the Cobra over the Viper), but the Dolphin gives people reasons to buy it, even if most won't. The is good game design, as it is not strictly dominated by the DBX. Trying to make every ship equal never works... all you need is for each ship to have a niche that it's not dominated in.

@@vib80 Extra jump range is always great, the only thing that is missing on the DBX from my perspective is another slot so you can have two repair units and hull repair. I made my first 10K Ly trip in a DBX for Explorer Elite and while it would have been nice to have a larger scopp it just meant throttling down to 50% while circling the star to align for the next jump every two jumps or parking close to the sun while scanning. A friend that just startet playing two months ago went trough most of the engineering unlocks in a DBX and it sure helped a lot to have deecend jump range without compromising to much on core internals. Looking for a proper long range, deep space exploration ship on a budged is a recipe for disaster anyway. I wouldn't want to do that in either of those. ASPX would be the bare minimum but I would prefer an Orca or a Krait Phantom. Conda is way to annoying to fly in for extended periods of time.

@@whydoihavetodothisannoying The thing is, the extra jump range isn't so much different here. You end up taking 9 jumps instead of 8. So you see an extra system, which in exploration is fine, because a large part of it is opening loot boxes looking for the best goodies. Getting to new places quickly is good too... but the 60ly a Dolphin can do is plenty for that. Saud Kruger ships don't get enough credit for their jump range because they're not at the absolute top... but they are just behind. That includes the Beluga... it's not as far as the other two, but part of the reason it looks bad is that it's got an oversized fuel tank with fuel for 10 jumps, which is very nice if your goal is to cruise in neutron layers with few stops, but if that's not your plan you can get a boost to range by downgrading the fuel tank (or just always running at half tank or below). One of the things I often wished for while exploring was fuel controls on the right panel, like the ability to set a max fill line on the tank for the scoop... good in general for exploring the fringes when you might want to run light. And to that end, the ability to dump fuel too... instead of just waiting for the generator to take it a tonne at a time. But other things too... like setting a max amount to spend on jumps instead of carrying an empty cargo bay so you can tell the route plotter to plot like you're heavier than you are. This is another big benefit of having an explorer with an extra slot right now, as you can get a lot more range on a fuel tank if you don't do maximum jumps, but the fuel-efficient plotter goes far too much in the other direction. There is a good balance in the middle, and a bunch of empty cargo space lets you hack the plotter for that.

@@vib80 I know they don't get enough credit I'm using an Orca myself most of the time, mostly because it's in the same ballpark as an ASP or Krait but with added creature comforts. I think the Beluga shouldn't be listed though, there are way to many ships with similar range that don't really belong either and a huge fuel tank isn't a good excuse. Without stacking all the empty space with optional fuel tanks(would make you suffer even more in range) both the Beluga and DBX end up having a max range of ~550Ly on a single charge, so max range is still king here. And it's about the extra jump range WITHOUT having to do much for it. You can pick up a DBX and just upgrade the FSD and it's already decent, a lot less fiddling around than with the Dolphin. Once you unlock Farseer you are almost set with your DBX, give or take 10 Ly. The Dolphin will take a lot of modding with overcharged power plants and stripped down internals to get to the same point the DBX gets with a simple FSD upgrade. This is what makes the DBX much more beginner friendly. I'm not saying the Dolphin is a bad choice for exploration, I just say it's nowhere near as good for a beginner since it takes a lot more work to get it where it needs to be.

Cobra 4 would have made for a decent early game miner, like ~70 tons of capacity and 2x2 Mining lasers. Larger mining lasers are the biggest reason to go with a Keelback over a similarly priced ship as well. If anything in this game is more depressing than mining, it's mining with 1D lasers. Even with four of those it takes long enough to strip a small deposit to make your trigger finger go numb.

I used a Sidewinder for bounty runs till I had enough for a Cobra. Then set the Cobra up to do Rare trade runs till I got a Asp Explorer. Then did even more rare trade runs faster and easyer. Now I just do not play the game much and I even recently bought the expansion.

Hauler is best. 30LY for 120k unengineered. Run Road2Riches 10M to 20M an hour within the first hour. Them jump straight to AspX.

This is ok guide. But really it’s sidewinder then get Adder just for a couple of hours then trade that in and get a t6. Then when you made some money keep that T6 for ever and buy a Viper mk3 and a Dbx. Now you have more or less every base covered t6 to make you money. Viper for combat and Dbx for exploring and mats and unlocking engineers collection etc until you go to Python and then Anaconda. Many go Asp but you don’t need too t6 and Dbx combo is better.

Don't skip The Hauler!! Just give it a try, you should be able to make more than enough in very short time to try both the Adder and the Hauler. The Adder interior is probably the worst!! plus seat is offset too much to the right, very limited view. The Hauler cockpit is way nicer, better jump range, and you will rack in millions by just exploring and/or running passenger missions. I know right after the Sidewinder you'll be itching for some combat, get the Eagle and milk those Resource Extraction Sites [Low], then Hauler (or Adder, yuck) and keep racking in cash, then whatever floats your boat.

being a noob that just upgraded to the Adder because glowing recommendations from youtube vids, I agree that the Adder's interior looks fugly. It looks soullessly empty and rounded, with a horrible field of vision (you'll have a good time spotting for the next asteroid on this bus). Performance-wise, I honestly dont have much complain for the Adder aside from the mediocre cargo size. Its manuverability is good enough that I can regularly go through mail slots from 60 degrees without clipping.

Imlerial eagle is way to much fun if you have credits to blow. Go engineer the thrusters hit a high res and battle some big ships. You can almost go into orbit around a anaconda with the speed of that fucker fully engineered.

The most EFFICIENT ship "progression", in Elite Dangerous is DEFINATELY, ....Sidewinder - Cobra Mk3 - Asp Explorer - Python! ANYTHING after that is "pure specialisation"! By then, presuming you don't sell any of those "progression ships", you'll have a ready made "cash building fleet", AND a shed load of cash, to go and do whatever you desire, in the rest of the galaxy!!

Most people that speedrun to the anaconda or something go sidewinder->adder->asp explorer-> anaconda. Once you get to the anaconda you generally have piles of cash to the point that credits are meaningless anyways but you can save a lot of time by not buying the cobra or bothering with the python when you're looking at most efficient progression

Sidewinder - Hauler - Asp Explorer - Python - Anaconda. A hauler running road to riches for just an hour or or two, will earn you enough for a decent Asp Explorer + fittings, which is a fair bit quicker than a using either a Cobra Mk3 or Adder and is almost risk free. And once you work your way up to an Anaconda, it's hard not too rake in piles of cash, so building up your fleet from then on, is easy. It's better to get to that point quickly and with taking as little risk as possible.

are you serious?! the hauler is the absolute best method to get from point a to b fast and efficient when you want to travel far distances as a beginner! cheap as F***: so no second thoughts about swapping it upon arrival and when you want to go somewhere else just buy a new one, strip it down to the bare bones and off you go! (P.S.: Adder is vastly overrated! )

Ahh the dear Cobra MKIII When you are in the starting system, THAT ship is your goal. The most expensive ship sold at the starter stations, and the one that does it all oh-so-well. I did every mission, killed every pirate, and scrimped & saved, and bought it.. and I was never happier with any ship other than that one. And I own all of the ships one can actually buy at this point in the game (Except Cobra MkIV)

Imo a better option from the starter system is the adder. It gets you out into the game at a fraction of the cost (and time) of the cobra and its a great little explorer, trader and miner. Sure the adder can't do combat very well but you'll get tired of farming defenseless pirates pretty fast when you're grinding for the cobra or trying to use the cobra to turn a profit

Honestly, Diamondback Explorer is better than the Asp X. If you want to explore, take the DBX until you can afford a Krait Phantom.

Obviously the best beginner ship is Anaconda. Nowadays everyone gets a conda in the first 50hrs of gameplay ... The milestone marking end of the beginner stage is their all A graded conda get smashed by a NPC gunship. Only at that moment, they know conda is not everything.

I recommend start off with painite mining to earn enough money ASAP to buy a cutter. And on the way do the two-system rep grind asap. Then I recommend going to reddit and tell people you now own a cutter after a short time because it annoys the hell out of the elitists who whinge that "you haven't earned that cutter because you haven't played for months apon months!" I also urge you to ask if you should use A drive or E drive modules, or how to fight in elite. Again, to stir elitists. MWUAHAHAHAHHAHA

Going straight for the imperial rank grind and the cutter is incredibly boring and the number 1 way to make yourself hate elite dangerous. Tbh ships like the anaconda, python and krait are better for mining and making piles of cash
