Bear, you forgot to mention the built-in impeller on the Dewalt 735. If you only have a 120v dust collector it has to be pretty powerful to handle planer chips. The nice thing about the 735's built in blower means you can pipe the chips into a bag or can without running *any* dust collection. It's shockingly effective at doing it on its own, and saves me from having to use anything but a vac for dust collection in my shop.

100% agree on the Dewalt higher end. I’ve had mine several years. I take very good care of it. If you do it’s well worth the money and it’ll last. Replacement carbide blades all day for $40/3 blades. I only paid $100 for mine though. Brand New.

My Dad got the better DeWalt planer and a key feature that we both like about it is you can set it not to go deeper than 1.5”, 1”, .75”, .5”, .25”. Which is nice when you are trying to match a thickness you already have.

Another benefit to the Dewalt 735, it has dual speeds, faster removal vs fine finish. I’ve seen the results on the fine finish setting : it’s beautiful. Another tip: look for the 735X, it includes the In/out feed tables and an extra set of blades. If you shop around you get that version for $650 and sometimes with the stand included. Speaking of blades, the 735 uses 2 sided disposable blades. Some people have tried sharpening them, but unlike traditional blades you can’t adjust the blade position to compensate, so one careful sharpening is the most likely possibility. Hence the cost of a helical head makes a little more sense...

I just picked up the WEN with spiral cutterhead. I have a shorts video of it in action up if anyone wants to see it work. The 2 blade WEN planer is my most popular review I did about 2 years ago too. 👍 Also be aware alot of the cheaper options only have 2 screws to raise and lower the motor/cutting head. Which can allow it to become slightly tilted left/right over time.

Nice Review I purchased the Dewalt 735x w/ in and out feed tables and a extra set of blades from Home Depot on Sale for $500.00 about a year and a half ago put it on a cart with a plastic rectanglar box underneath with a exhaust port bag catches about 90% of the dust. I am still on the first blades that have been used mostly on softer woods - very happy overall.

Got a deal on a used Dewalt 735, brought it home and hated it. Off to KZbin and cleaned the rollers , waxed the table and rotated the knives. Voila!! A great machine. Time came to replace the knives and bought the Byrd head. Again a whole new machine. Quieter, feeds better and the finish is superb.

This is a GREAT video. It's just the right length with the right level of detail and moves smoothly. I've been looking at these machines for a while with a fair amount of confusion and this video has helped. I really appreciate the high level overview of the top 3 or 4 things to consider. Thank you and accolades. I'd suggest a follow up might be the next 4 or 5 things that one might want as secondary features.

The main advantage, at least for me on the Dewalt 735 planer is the fact that it has a built in chipper/blower. As we know planers make a ton of chips and dust and by having the built in chipper/blower you don’t need a separate vac hooked too it, only a leaf style bag or trash can with a rag on top and a hose. Really makes clean up a breeze.

I have a few thoughts about this. I’m also currently in the market for a thickness planer. I’ve read numerous reviews about the various machines and I’m pretty much settled on the 13.5” Dewalt machine. I am also going to add the **full size** Shelix cutter. A couple of reasons for the Dewalt. First, it’s a rock solid machine. It’s repeatable thickness control is important when planing multiple parts. Second, the infeed/outfeed tables are a bit more sturdy and will reduce the sniping effect that the cheaper, less sturdy machines produce. Third, it’s 13.5” wide! Get the widest width you can, sooner or later you’re going to have something that is just that frogs hair too wide and won’t go thru your machine. So consider the widest cut for your needs. There is a difference between the 2 Shelix available cutters! One is slightly undersize so that it can be installed and removed without first removing the cutter inserts from the cutter body. The other is full size and matches the original cutter diameter, but must be installed without the cutter inserts on the cutter body. The full size cutter, with the inserts, won’t fit thru the bearings. The ultimate difference being is that the smaller cutter will result in the thickness scale on the machine to be inaccurate. You do not need to remove the entire cutter body from the machine to replace individual damaged cutters. Another potential issue for some users is available electrical power. There is a KZbin video that tests the power requirements for these various cutters, and it’s been shown that helical cutters require more amperage. This isn’t a concern for me, but for those with older or limited power supply, it’s something to keep in mind!

I have had the Wen 6552T (three knife) thickness planer for about 2 years. No regrets at all. Third most used power tool in my garage behind the table saw and jointer. I believe my thickness planer is half way to paying for itself letting me salvage wood that I might otherwise have tossed out. FYI, I am a hobbiest not a pro. Also, I throw a lot of the "dirty work" at this thing, so no point getting something too nice. The Wen 6552T does not have 2 upper cross bars, what the Bear saw in the pictures are actually channels which hold rollers for rolling boards back to the infeed side from the outfeed side. However, I believe the solid metal orange "cap" serves the same purpose as the a 2 cross bar system and makes the entire frame more rigid. The large solid flat top has been really handy. I believe this is the lightest 3 blade 13 inch thickness planer out there at 66 lbs. A big issue for me since it will never have a permanent home in the garage.

I have the DeWalt 734 and it's been great. I've abused the hell out of it for about a year now and I really don't have any complaints. I saw one guy said he was still on the first side of the original blades after 2 years. Wow. I'm on the second side of my second set and I'm about to start on my 3rd set. But I don't like ridges in my stock when a blade gets nicked. Ive been working with alot of hickory lately though too. It's really hard and probably a little tougher in the blades than your pine or maple or poplar. Anyway I highly recommend DeWalts lunchbox planer. Can't speak on the 735 but the 734 is a winner

Nearing 50 years of producing wood finery, I agree with bear, the DeWalt two speed surface planer does a great job for the money, my only bitch is the blades, while I recommend them vs after market blades they nick real easy! However, if you know your way around the shop, they're easy enough to re home, and have a adjustable slot within the blade so that you can move the blade different position to avoid the nick areas.. that being said, a scraper blade is faster.. quality work needs to be sanded regardless! One other piece of important info, regards to end nip, this can be adjusted by the out feed table, adjusted so that the end is higher than the planets surface, but don't get carried away, a tiny amount goes a long way! Thanks for the low down on surface planers! Peace and happy crafting to all!

I started with one of the first bench top delta planers, $400 back in the day. The feed was lousy, push in/pull out, but that said, I got a lot of work out of it. Next i got a deal on the Bauer. I used it lightly for a few months and had the same feed problems as with the Delta plus it left black rubber marks from the feed rollers. I had to plane 10 eight foot pine boards, so we set it up outside. About two boards shy of finishing the second pass the motor started throwing sparks...sawdust everywhere. Luckily i spotted it, shut off the planer and put out the small sawdust fire before it got bigger. Warranty expired. I now have the Dewalt 2 speed and love it! My big complaint about all of these planers is there are no rollers on the tables like stationary planers have. I think that would help eliminate drag and feed issues. BTW, I gave the Delta to mt neighbor and it's still working. He got the knives out of the bauer for spares as well.

Hi Bear. I had the older Delta single bar 2 blade. I know they say those are disposable blades but I sharpened mine. Not if they were damaged, that almost NEVER happened as I am careful what I plane. I got a very good finish cut with mine. I also alway take a small cut. I now have the Rikon I bought when they first came out , I got it for $599. WOOT 🙏🏻🥳 It’s good but not as great as I had hoped. I Love Jet and have a good amount of jet in my shop. I feel Rikon hurt Jet. I feel WEN is now doing what Rikon did and they hurt Rikon and as you said “ eating everyone’s lunch” . I have never had to use customer service for WEN , probably just consider them semi disposable. I often start with a less expensive tool and later upgrade if it becomes appropriate based on my use. Thanks Bear , always enjoy your content.

I’ve got two - a DEWALT 734 that is my go to machine and an older Delta 2 speed machine that I use for more expensive wood like walnut. I’d like a 735 since it is easier to change the cutter head but the $900 total cost and probable voided warranty is a drawback. Someone on KZbin did a test of the 735 with an ampmeter on it and it definitely draws a lot more power to run the carbide head which means your motor is going to run hot if you run a lot of wood through it at a time.

My only real gripe is the thin disposable blades just don't hold up very well on rough sawn lumber especially if it's hard, knotty, or a little dirty. And once they get a little dull the performance of the planer is greatly reduced.

I have been doing some research on the Rikon, and though it says its a helical head, it lines up straight and has only two blades per piece instead of four. And they are expensive to replace, like around $200! I almost decided to get that one, but changed my mind quick. Also reading reviews of Bauer, many of them want to return it quick. I prefer a helix, but at least a three blade instead of two. I'm still looking and watching what you got here. Thanks.

the individual blades are four sided and its only necessary to rotate the cutterhead that is dull or damaged, rather than all of them, so it will be a while before you go through all four sides on all 26 cutterheads, cheaper than knives in the long run...

I went lower cost because I finish sand my projects anyway. So a small nick in a non-helucal is no big deal. If you are going to put a 400 + dollar head on an already 400 to 700 dollar surface planer your bang for the buck options might include a look at commercial grade with its wider capacity or a surface sander (if you have the space, if course).

If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend waiting until you can save up the money to buy a spiral head/helical cutter. In the long run you will save so much time and money (Replacing blades.) I had a rigid 3 blade thickness planner and upgraded to the grizzly helical planner the the results are a huge gain. The finishes are cleaner and if a blade gets nicked all you need to do is loosen that one blade and rotate it. Changing the thickness planner blades when one starts creating lines on the wood in the middle of a project is a huge waste of time and very demotivating.

One of the best features of the $290 WEN Planer that is overlooked by most people and is not, to my knowledge, featured on any of the other units discussed, is the granite table. Other planers use a nickle plated table that can be scratched as easy as the blades can be nicked. This can damage the surface of the wood as much as nicked blades. Replacing these tables are harder and more expensive than blade replacement. This does add some extra weight. However the granite surface is much tougher and can be polished leaving it very slippery which puts less strain on the motor and less friction on the workpiece. It may also be featured on the other WEN models as well. I hope this is helpful.

LOVE the bear routine! Classic!! A way better approach than some of these schmucks that just don't measure up. Anyhow, getting down to brass tacks regarding these planers, most are without question produced from the same manufacturing company off shore and then proceed to stamp a companies name on it. I mean, even my technically challenged wife could see this. Most of these units are throw-aways when you run into major issues, and make no bones about it, you will if you run them hard. They are just okay for softer woods, but once you start getting into the harder species of wood, then this will become evident. As for the WEN and some of the other units that have the spiral knife heads, check them! They are not the type that you showed in your video. The blades are spaced further apart and you don't get nearly the same cutting smoothness. The three blades on the DeWalt 735 are okay, but don't hold an edge long, hence the investment into a helical cutting head is worth the investment. I find that this unit is by far the best and most solid in the way of construction. It does have a lot of plastic on it though. But if you are a serious DIYer and you want something that will last you a very long time when you are looking at portable planers, then this is undoubtedly the best bang for your buck. Yes, two and even three times the cost of others, but when you consider that replacing a cheaper unit after it has failed and would cost you more to fix it that to buy a new one, then overall the Dewalt is right there. My old man, God rest his soul, always said that a cheap man pays twice! And that is so true. How many times have any of us gone out and purchased something new only to replace it a short time down the road? Bite the bullet and just pay a bit more up front and save yourself the aggravation. Thanks for the video. Cheers!

Got the Wen spiral head planer and it's been awesome so far. No issues whatsoever, but there is a little snipe on the first and last boards. Pretty easy to minimize or eliminate that problem with sanding
@johnnorris1227
@johnnorris1227 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty easy to eliminate any snipe by feeding boards back to back one right after the other. You can also use a short scrap piece to start and end with which will eliminate snipe even on the front of the first and the back of the last board. Another method is to leave boards around 6 or so inches longer than needed and cut to final length after planing then you can cut off any snipe.

I picked up a Dewalt planer from my local auction house. I don't remember exactly the model but I think it is a DW734. It looked brand new including the installed blades, plus came with a new set of replacement blades. It cost me $75.00 and has worked great for years. Granted I don't run it to often but it has done great with pine, black walnut, maple, cherry and scrap wood including pallets.

April and Matt are paid by Triton to use Triton, FWIW. First thing to ask is how much are the replacement knives. That's enough usually to determine which planer you buy. 25 years ago I bought a Delta DC-380. 5 years ago I put a Byrd Shellix head on it. Total outlay $1800 and works all day. It would cost $3000 to replace it. Best "hard swallow" I ever endured.

Extremely timely. Have been seriously looking at these, ready to pull the trigger. One thing on prices. If you are a veteran, you can get 10% off any purchase at Lowe's. On the $499 DeWalt, that essentially becomes $450. We served, we should use every assistance we can get. Good comparison video!

I love my Dewalt 735. I have it against a wall, and I ran a rubber 90 with screw straps into a pvc and ran the pipe in an upside down U shape into a pillow case. Works great. People get concerned with the knives getting small nicks in them - don't worry too much. Yes, it does happen, and you can open the top and shift the knifes left and right and alot of times that eliminates it. However, since I use it for just dimensioning, it's fine. I have tiny little nicks in blade that leave fine lines and it's fine. Why? Because when I go to sand, that all comes out. The snipe doesn't exist once you adjust your in feed outfeed tables to point up on each side. If you don't have tables, then you can build some sort of longer infeed table - just need to account for the thickness ie, 1". I like that the 735 can do 6" height, which is nice to run boards on side either in a sled or not to straighten out a side so I can run it on the table saw. Good tool, it's expensive but it saves a TON of time when you have a stack of lumber and need to get things even. I had about 200 BF of walnut that were 8 to 10 foot lengths and it I had first passes done in under an hour.

I'll be completely honest when I say that this was my absolute FAVORITE tool to run in wood shop as a ute. (What's a "ute?") The second being the joiner. The way they left that almost paint-able smooth, true surface gave me a "woody."

No mention of the integrated chipper/blower on the DeWalt 735? Great feature. No need for a dust collector and the long shavings from a standard planer don't suck up well anyway. Team the 735 with a cheap cyclone and a garbage can and it's well worth the money.

Few fun facts: The Craftsman is the value-engineered version of the P-C which itself was a VE version of an older Delta model. The Delta was decent as it had a cutterhead lock, but the PC (and I assume the Craftsman) are kinda terrible even at the low price point. Tons of snipe and cutterhead creep. The Powertec, the Triton, and the Harbor Freight Bauer are all the same machine other than the 1 or 2 bar differences. Maybe there’s some differences below the hood, but doubtful.

Thanks for the video, I plan on getting the Bauer and my reasoning at this point is that HF offer's a two year warranty on it. So I know that if anything happens to it I can take it back and get a new one. I think it's a good one to start with and if my business grows and it's needed I'll more than likely upgrade to the Dewalt you're talking about. Thanks for all the options. Shine On 🐻

Something to consider on the insert style cutters. Are the inserts proprietary (available only from the manufacturer) or are they ISO standard and available from multiple sources like Kennametal, Wiha, Walter, etc. My brother bought a Metabo beveler for weld prepping steel plate. Great machine, but the inserts are ONLY available from Metabo at $150 to $180 for a box of 10 (unit takes 3 at a time). Square inserts, but 11 mm circle diameter. Not standard in the ISO insert system. Always research the consumables on a tool. The consumable costs are often the downfall of a frugal tool price. Kinda like inkjet printers.

I’m in the market for thickness planer and am not against buying a lesser brand name if it performs, i bought the Hercules 12” miter saw over DeWalt 780 for this reason. The Hercules IMO is as well built as DeWalt and having owned it for 2 years i made the correct choice. However, when it comes to a thickness planner I am not messing around and getting one that has consistent good/top reviews so going with the DW375.

I have the DeWalt 735. It's faced some serious use the past two years and I'm still on the first side of the original blades. They're not perfect, they leave ridges. But the ridges are so slight it takes little effort to remove them with a palm sander. I'm building a new butcher block style work bench and will turn them around after. Prviously, I built a large cherry butcher block top for a kitchen island that seats six people. I'm still debating whether it's worth upgrading to the helical. Since I bought the 535 I sold my drum sander. I didn't need it any more.

I've had the smaller Dewalt 734 for over 10 years and have worked it HARD. Has always performed well for me. The only thing I've done to it is change blades (of course) and grease the chain on the bottom. Will you get that kind of performance from the cheaper brands. Probably not.

I have a Wen 6552 13" planer several years old. I had no problems with it planing till I ran across a tapered piece of wood and didn't realize it. I started out cutting a 1/32 slice and about half way through it jammed and quit feeding. Turns out if broke the transmission that drives the infeed and outfeed rollers. The part isn't that expensive from Wen so I have one on order. Just a warning to not try to cut more than his planer can handle even by accident. Measure the thickness of your wood at several intervals. Seriously considering buying their newer model with spiral cutters.
