That Journal is no longer available - do you recommend another hardbound journal for this system? I am new in my faith (saved and baptized on 4/29/24) and want to start my bible studies using the best methods and this seems like the best method so far. I also took your advice on what translation to utilize from your one video and have the journaling NKJV and ESV. Thank you for all your help Pastor! God Bless!

One thing that works great with a table of contents is to put the table of contents on the last page working backwards, and the notes starting in the front. That way, you never run short on ToC space.

Hi Pastor Matthew. My name is Marietta and I am from South Africa. I just want to say thank you for this video. Where I stay we don't have a church to attend, so most of my learning comes from Pastor's posting their videos here on KZbin. I have been a Christian now for 10 years, and have been searching for a way to study my Bible, and your video has truly inspired me. I am currently doing what you mentioned in this video, and I would like to say thank you again. I am finding it hard to not study. I miss it if I don't do it. I hunger for God's Word every day now. I can feel how the Holy Spirit is changing me slowly. Thank you again. It really helped me a great deal.

I really love this system that you’ve outlined here. I have made a note in my notes app to be proactive about doing this. After I became a Christian as a teenager, my relationship with my Grandmother grew closer because of her faith in the Lord. When she died, I received a book and a bible with all her notes in it. It is a treasure to go back and see her thoughts. As a pastor now, I have always wanted to do the same for my family: my son, daughters, and their children as well. Question: I find that my initial thoughts always need many revisions. Are there preliminary notes that you write before they go into the journal as an official miscellany? Or do you just roll with it?

I think this is the solution to how I want a notebook and bible for each pastor I follow. I can actually have one bible with a colored misc index for each pastors sermon so I can see “X” pastor referenced this verse in “Y” sermon, and so did “A” pastor in “B” sermon. Thanks for sharing!

This reminds me a lot of the Zettelkasten system of note taking. I've been using a version of this to organize a lot of my Bible notes to turn into a commentary for myself. If you want your notes to be searchable digitally, you can use software like Obsidian (a Markdown note editor) to easily transcribe your notes and the links between ideas. It works great for surfing around and gathering ideas on a topic. This is a great idea. The idea of writing the miscellany number in the margin of the Bible is particularly genius. Thanks for the video!

I purchased several composition books, all different colors, which I use for my notes. This is very helpful because I can start the numbering system by preceding it with the letter appropriate to the color of my notes books, such as R003 for Red #003, etc. In a separate video you referenced a link to the Bible you use in Amazon's Store. Upon going there, I realized that it was too costly for me to purchase at this time. However, I have an excellent Study Bible that was 1/4 the price, and though I wish I had the luxury of wide margins, perhaps this numbering system will help me with my note taking. Thank you for opening the useful suggestions. I'm looking forward to incorporating them with a couple of my own to make them work for me. God bless you and thank you for sharing.

This is kind of off topic, but I always thought it would be cool to have a Bible Wiki where you can store your notes and choose which notes you want to make public. And the public Wiki would have notes from people all over the world (in theory). Granted you would get all kinds of wild stuff in the public Wiki, but it could be edifying also to read other's notes.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful method. I have tried Bible journaling with detailed notes in the margin and tipped in papers, verses marked in color and outlined and just don't like the clutter of it. I tried putting all my notes in a notebook, but I have a very real problem with perfectionism and get upset when I get to the end of a page and make a handwriting mistake. So, I put mine in a binder. I type up my notes after a sermon or Bible study and put them in a binder. I have just started the process so I can fit everything in one binder. I have it divided into sections like, sermons from church, KZbin sermons/studies, my reflections on verses and testimony, my favorite verses, etc. It just helps me to remember what I have studied by taking notes and then processing those notes. Thanks again.

Just found your channel. Sounds like John Edwards created the original Bullet Journal. ;) (In case anyone doesn't know what a bullet journal is. Ryder Carroll invented the bullet journal method of planning a few years ago. I use it and love it.)
@Jbstan75 жыл бұрын
so very interesting and valuable!! I do have an idea regarding your numbering/indexing system. In the BulletJournal method [tons of you tube videos/the system designed by Ryan Carroll] there is a section called 'threading'.....say for instance that the joy of God covers more than one page [your example does]...but on the first page you would 'thread' to the next page by just drawing an arrow forward to the page it would be found. ....say for example page 20. Then going to page 20 you also draw an arrow backwards to where the original entry is. I hope this makes sense. It is a lot easier than your present system. yes, you wold have to write in page number in the journal,, and amend your table of contents, but your journal is new enough you could incorporate an easier way. hope that makes sense and is helpful in return :)

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is probably one of the greatest sermons of all time! I am definitely interested in this. I currently have my regular physical Bible for daily reading that doesn't have any markings in it because every time I read through the Holy Spirit gives me something new; I have a note-taking physical Bible with lines next to verses that I got on Amazon and will be transferring all my notes into from services and Bible studies. During reading or listening to audio/video sermons or even in just my day-to-day activities, any insights or thoughts I'm given I immediately put into a note-taking app on my phone and then I spend time transferring them and meditating later. The Spirit has given me things at 3 AM before and I immediately got up and wrote it in my app! I post lots of verses and thoughts online and in [often intense] discussions or arguments, so I use the Tecarta Bible app on my phone. It allows for adding notes, cross-references and highlighting of verses individually, in addition to a built-in search and concordance function that allows for even parts of words to be searched, plus a separate note-taking section built into the app, which I rarely use. I can easily copy verses into my regular note-taking app for either meditation and thought development, which is also easily searchable, then I have a finalized comment I can easily post online or send in a group message the men at my church participate in that doesn't require editing, especially because I'm dyslexic I'll go back and re-read it and modify it a half-dozen times, adding verses and cross-references or other insights and thoughs before I use it for anything. In the end, I always end up writing it out physically to retain it, apart from the fact that in the church we don't use electronic devices at all. I preached my first sermon a few weeks ago and this whole process allowed for a natural flow and extensive verses without being obnoxious, the true foundation coming only by being blessed by the Holy Spirit. The Old Paths! Praise God!

I like to use generally expensive stationary (mainly because I personally like it not to show of, spending a lot of money on a norte book isn't generally viewed as cool). Some notebooks are used to keep track of things within binding instead of loose paper (you could say the same is possible with a binder but it does not hold up as well as a notebook. I like to take notes online make them final and transfer them to paper for on the go of archival use

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this with us. One idea to consider would be to incorporate a Bullet Journaling table of contents method. This means that you don’t have to pre-write the table of contents’ pages. Rather, Whenever you start writing on a page, you put that entry into the ToC (title and page), and when you decide to continue a Miscellanie later on, that page(s) is not added to the ToC because you’ve got the cross-reference written on the page of the previous page where it was continued from. The Bullet Journal ToC would include every future page number added to the one ToC line entry, but you don’t have to with Edward’s cross-reference idea.

Wow this is so good. I have 4 or 5 notebooks full of stuff over the course of years. Everyday I write what I read that day, and if there are any questions, thoughts, connections, etc I'll write about those. But many pages are just multiple dates and what section of scripture I read that day. I rarely go back to them though and sometimes I wonder, why do I do this? It does help me remember things to write them down, so that's part of it... but I don't often go back to reference something that I've already thought through or questioned, and then answered in my notes. Table of contents, numbering your pages, and especially the putting your M# in the margins of your bible... such a good idea. I'll be doing this from now on. Wish I would have known this 5 years ago when you uploaded this video. Just now finding it lol

I'm just a bit confused.... 1. A miscellany is a group or collection of ideas? Big ideas? Big themes? Topics? 2. How does one know how many they will have? Just depends? 3. When one runs out of paper for M001, do you make M009 into M001 or, thus M001 has many entries throughout the book, or does M009 become the topic too, so 001, 009 are both on Joy? I'm geeking out with my question. :) Like bullet journaling spreads and collections but for Bible Study?

@@thinktank8286 I use this the system for notes that are too long for the margins of my Bible. The qualifier is that they have to be able to be meaningfully titled for indexing. I have notes on subjects and themes, but also hymns, poetry, diagrams and lists that adorn the text being studied. You never know how many you will have. When you run out of paper for M001, M009 stays M009, but leave a note at the bottom of M001 saying that you are continuing on M009, and perhaps call M009 "continuation of M001" in the index.

Ty for your work. The respect you have for your mentor is admirable.

something like four 27 gallon totes will store 50 three-ring binders with loose leaf paper; these binders can be for books of the bible; and 1 binder can do Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, were smaller epistles can be grouped into one binder; Thus if I am taking notes on Monday on Nehemiah, then on Saturday I can remove those pages from my note taking binder and go insert them into the proper folder in the proper tote. So I have one binder for "new notes made this week" and at the end of the week I can sort them into the proper binder; Also digitally I have 66 subfolders if my notes are taken digitally.

Great video - I needed your explanation of Edwards system. Thanks.

That's a crazy in depth system! It seems very organized though while still providing lots of details. Very interesting. Personally, I'm more of a digital person. What I like about this, is how easily it could be done in a digital way with my note taking app. Thanks for sharing.

Chris Bradley I thought the same thing. Then you can always insert more. What app do you use?

@@mmmbarrett I've become a huuuge fan of Notion. I use it for quite a lot now days. It's free, but I use it so much that I pay $5 for unlimited everything with all the features.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but due to eyesight and other factors, I am more of a digital Bible and notebook note keeper. I can see how this way of organizing notes could easily work digitally as well. Thank you for sharing!

I agree 100%! Logos 8 and Notability are the way forward for me. As for leaving a memento/book for my kids, you can just print the pages and make a book for each one of them.

Love this idea. It reminds me a bit of the Franklin Covey planner method (based on Benjamin Franklin) I take a plethora of notes and am constantly searching through them. I will have to research it and see if it will work for me.

So, really, it makes sense to use this system to be as a footnote/journaling system for a collection of Bibles, where the margin number just points to the journal. A wide-margin Bible isn’t absolutely necessary. I like that, since I write too big for even the wide-margin Bibles, and I tend to write too much for the margins. Thanks!

These are some good ideas. I started a notebook series specifically for sermon & study notes, but had not though to connect my Bible margin notes to the notebooks. The table of contents in each notebook is very helpful, though. I currently use Moleskine notebooks, as the size is about the same length and width of my Bible.

Thank you for making this video! My scripture note taking system is similar to this one minus the cross reference note in the bible, which is the key to making this system useful. It shouldn't be too difficult to go back and add them.

Great video Matt! I've recently started to bullet journal and have been thinking of how I can use another one for my personal reading and study of Scripture. I would have probably done something similar to this when I was pastoring a few years ago. Shalom friend. P.S. Spurgeon is one of my favorites to read, like Edwards is to you.
