Matt et al. A technique I use to take notes in my Bible is to use a straight edge and underline passages. I use old gift cards or credit cards that match the width of the columns and are easy to move around on the page. I also use the straight edge to write on. Using the edge to print (no cursive) in smaller and controllable letters. I'm of the mindset that I'm leaving a legacy for my children and grandchildren to see my thought process after I'm dead and gone. I also write a small note to them indicating that I was thinking of them during my studies. I use PaperMate Ink Joy, Tul, Pilot G2, Jetstream, and Uni Jetstream (which doesn't smudge immediately after writing).

I have an Amplified Bible that was used by a Lady for more than 30 years. There is no white space left after her notes were added over a lifetime. It is a treasure to visit her most thoughtful entries as she grew to know God better. You are doing a good thing.

Update on pens. I discovered that Pilot has erasable gel ink roller pens called "Frixion" 0.7mm. They work great on India paper and you can erase mistakes (gently). Erase from the center binding outward and you won't tear the pages. Multi-color packs, somewhat pricey.

I find I am often best served by a Bible without notes. It seems that I get new insights each time I read Scripture and the old notes are no longer relevant. Your idea of a notebook has much more appeal. Thanks for your useful approaches. MikeInMinnesota

@@garynieman3743 I would have done that, but a pastor once told me it is cool to see how you walk in the Lord has progressed. Also pencil marks fade so if your children want to read what you wrote one day it won't be there anymore.

I also wanted to add another comment here - just, because I don't know - I do. I've never felt compelled to share it publicly. My Dad passed away June, 2021. After approval from my mom and sister, I took over possession of a family Bible that had been handed down from My Grandfather to Dad to me. The Bible is from the 1850's. Mom and I spent $800 having it painstakingly restitched and reconstructed - it was literally resurrected. Someone in the family tried to do it by hand 60 years or so ago and failed. The miracle was that the craftsman that did the work was 5 minutes from Mom's house. I remember the night before we took it to this place of business - I thought "I could just throw this Bible away and no one would care much". But I didn't! We had it done. I think that says something about Mom and I - not sure what, but something.

On the lined pages of my Cambridge wide-margin KJV I'm writing all of the prophesies in the Old Testament of the Lord Jesus Christ and also types and shadows as manifested as substance in the New Testament. I really appreciate these videos Matthew - my second time through all of them. I am using this process and tweeking it into an electronic version - Kindle, etc. When I thumb back through my notes in my old Bibles - I can't recall 90% of them. And, I lost a Bible at church once - with my name on the cover - yes, go figure. I checked Lost and Found for two years, then gave up. I hope the recipient was blessed by it. I'm not a big believer that my grandkids will have an interest in my peculiar notes 30 years from now - but maybe by the life I'm living. God bless you all - appreciate this group.

I needed this video thank you!. I often wondered what I should do in a wide margin whenever I messed up or found out later that the conclusion in my notes wasn't accurate. Thank you for showing it. I have to disagree a little on the "As your name, so your praise" being a wasted note (space). I get what you are saying, but that was your reaction to that verse and (IMHO) capturing that joy / excitement you felt from reading it is just as valid as intellectually-driven notes. It also gives anyone that may read your Bible notes later, an inkling of how the spirit moved you in that moment. Also, CONGRATULATIONS on being the father of the OFFICIAL Aquila name!

Hey Matt wow that's so cool about the Aquila edition of the wide margin. I'm excited to see it when it comes out although I am using a NKJV translation of the Cambridge wide margin for a couple years now. I have been slowly transferring the important notes from my old bible which was not a wide margin to my wide margin. It has helped facilitate really good devotion and study times as I revisit my old notes and spend time meditating on them as I rewrite them and it's been great. However I honestly thought that it would be a fairly quick project... it oftentimes takes me hours just to do a chapter or less! Because I'm not just mindlessly trying to copy and paste but trying to spend time with the Lord. Thank you for your encouragement and of being a good example as a disciple of Christ.

I failed to watch the whole thing through until just a few minutes. As a long time subscriber it was wonderful to hear of the bible name change in your honor! A fellow KZbinr Stephen Hackett from Biblical Studies and Reviews came up with the idea that he would use a letter next to the text and whether there was room next to the text or not he would then from top to bottom around the margins use the next letter in the alphabet which allowed him to get the most out of his margin space.

It’s supper cool that you played a role in naming this Bible. Now, can you use your influence with Cambridge to urge them into printing a true “note taker’s” Bible. One that doesn’t fill precious page space with cross references that I can find in almost every other Bible in print. One that doesn’t take up dozens of pages printing a truncated concordance or maps that never get used because I have a smart phone. A Bible that truly maximizes space for my notes. That would be great! Just a thought.

Congratulations! I hope the Aquila comes out in a large print version as well. I am one of those people who require a minimum 10 point font, with a preference for a 12 point. I understand that it would be the size of the Yellow Pages from the 60's and 70's, but a Bible does me no good if I can't read it! I'm also obsevive about note taking and highlighting, and I "box" instead of underline, unless it's just a couple of words or a short line of scripture. Now that the majority of my Study Bibles are large print, I have gotten in the habit of using a sheet of paper from a steno pad to make extensive notes on and just slip the paper into the appropriate place in my Bible. And, I can write nice and large instead of trying to make tiny little letters in the margins! :)

Great video! It gave me some ideas for my own bible note taking. I have a similar idea that you have with your Misc. book, but it is based on the Zettelkasten method that was created by Niklas Luhmann. Each idea gets it's own index card and each card has a unique reference ID. You can then link cards together and form new thoughts and ideas. This would also be great for putting notes in a bible that reference out to those unique ideas. One note that I need to create is from Marcus Aurelius book Meditations. He mentions something in Book 1 that for me linked directly to Matthew 6 about giving. In speaking of Rusticus he learned not to do "benevolent acts in order to make a display". I'm looking forward to "tearing up" my bible, in a good way.

When I graduated from college in 1977 the Lockman Foundation gave every graduate their NAS Bible. As an obsessive note-taker, I fell in love with it. Over the years now, there are some passages where it is hard to find the passage among the notes. I did not know anything about the NAS, but have since seen that John MacArthur has it as one of the versions of his study Bibles. I trust him a lot, so if he used it (he now uses the NKJV)......... Which by the way, I should add that if you are wondering what a good translation to get, find out what translation your pastor uses, that is, if he is Biblically soiund.

You could rebind the eagle adding 32 (might want to stop at 26) lined pages between each stitched group of pages. Name the lined sections a, b, c, etc. and number the pages a1, a2, a3; b1, b2, b3 etc for each section. Notes get labeled to refer to the page in the section of lined paper. Kind of like Edwards blank bible but with more pages.

If you put in the freezer, the highlights should return. When you had to scratch out, that would be the place where the Frixion pens would have been ideal. You could use the frixion pen's "eraser" to get the friction and heat the paper needed to erase, or just touch it with a dry iron set on low--no steam--and the note will be gone in an instant.

If you DO decide to take the Cambridge hardcover apart... and punch holes in the paper.. I would suggest that when you have finished with this either try hand sewing the the original cover boards to the front and back. or attaching them some other way... that way you keep the "feel".. of the Cambridge bible... but as a customized version of it...

I do not remember if I left you this note before... but as far as erasing texts in bibles.. I have found that the wite out dispensers that have the wite out tape on them to be the best..when used on a hard service held correctly and mindful of your hand movement while going across the text ,this can neatly eliminate mis- written text.. allowing that space to be re written on...the draw back is if the mis-written text is between the verses or something close to a verse... this wite out strip is at least 1/8 "..in width (I believe) and so it is hard to use in between bible text without covering up something by mistake.. in THAT situation I would recommend the original liquid wite out.. and put a partial drop on a pen or scissor tip so you can dab it into a very small space

One thing I’ve also done in my eagle is also to directly or indirectly “external sources of the Bible. And I have a index list in the back of one of the blank pages. As an example I may have the institutes as ES #1. If there is a reference or commentary that I am placing on a particular verse I will place instead of the whole book ES#1. This lets me know that I have an external source and then I can and I can see the index to which one

I like to use washi tape instead of white out. Painters tape is good too because you can write on top of it

Matt you would probably be better off with the white out tape. I think the liquid would possibly damage the paper. Or worse cause pages to become glued together.

Great idea! I need to try that. Since recording, I have tried white out. Will do an update!

Use a white gel pen. Use small circular strokes on each letter. Let it completely dry. Write over.

My go to is a KJV from Church Bible Publishers called the Note Takers bible. Single column, very wide margin, great paper and easy for aging eyes to read.

Use pencil for underling and notes instead of pen. I like to use different colored pens bracketing sections. Purple for the attributes of God (Kingship). A star drawn next to prophesies of Christ. The letter P for prophesies of the prophets and Jesus (like Temple being destroyed). Blue ink for Baptism. Green for salvation, justification, preeminence. Notes in pencil make it easy to erase and do over.

My sons’ handwriting beat you by far. When my youngest was in high school I went for a teacher’s conference with his Lit teacher. His teacher began to talk about the absolute illegibility of his writing.(This is NOT an exaggeration.) “Ma’am, I would tell you he has the worst handwriting that I’ve ever seen, but I taught your older son.” Just a bit of a giggle for your day. Thank you for your interesting video. God bless!

And you have touched on one reason of many ....why although many of the bibles I own have free empty paper in the back some lined some not lined... I have NOT written on them... I do not know what I wish to write their to save for obscurity... AND.. when I am looking at a passage I will have to remember to flip to the back for my note on it.. instead of the note being right there... and without making reference to it in the side column somewhere I will forget that I DID write a note on said passage..(out of sight out of mind)./.. plus my age is working against me...suffice it to say.. that one day.. I will put something on those sheets.. but the notes I write may just be like a list of the Dispensations.. and explanations of them.. or the Covenants and explanation. of them.... or my beliefs regarding baptism.. election... Lordship Salvation etc....

I wonder if " paper tape" or masking tape would work to cover up large note taking mistakes. Painters tape would be gentle on the paper. With both of these ideas, you can write new notes on top of the tape. Oh...maybe look up "artist tape" too.

You mention the Reformation study Bible as one of your top recommendations. Is that the original version or the newer condensed version.

I started my Christian walk in the 90s with a Life Application Study bible. Lots of highlights and notes in it. Sadly and ironically, it was stolen. I now have the Crossway single column journaling bible, ESV and the John MacArthur Study Bible ESV...however, I'm considering getting the ESV study bible. I bought the student version of the ESV study bible for my son.

How do you respond to messing up a marking? I just got a new Wide Margin Bible and messed up a couple markings in the first week of having it. I have found that using white gel pens is a good way to do some small correction. However, I just really get bothered about not being perfect.

Hey brother, Have you ever thought of making a video about the pros/cons of taking notes for a "legacy bible" for each of your children? Obviously during your daily study your thought needs to be on Christ, but as an extra "study" and devotional times making a Bible for each of children. I have just begun doing this with my wife for each of our children and am wondering if you plan on handing down your "retired" Bibles to your children?

Have you tried the tape-style white out rather than a paint on liquid?
