A declaration of the rights of Magicians was so worth it to read despite it having over 600+ pages and definitely deserves more hype along with The justice of kings which is definitely a big book but the themes of justice and equality as well as corruption really were written beautifully. Especially because it is by a new author. It’s long but it is so good plus it is a grimdark fantasy that reads more like a classic midevil times story.

Looking up The Priory of the Orange Tree right now!! Also, the Wheel of Time series is such a journey. I've read the whole thing twice, and it has been an incredible experience both times. Surprisingly, even more so the second time round because I already knew the characters and the story well, so I knew which details to focus on and which ones I could leave by the wayside.

If you want something like the three body problem then you need to check out Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. It's a military hard sci fi and the author has a masters degree in math from cornell and you can TELL because the novel is so dense and the science is so out there but at the same time it's super fascinating and interesting. The characters are super morally complex and as a plus the author is a trans man so he had the good sense to not have any of the egregious sexism that plagued 3BP lol 😂😂 if you're on the lookout for more sci fi books then you should watch Rachel from the Shades of Orange; she reads and recommends a lot of unique and underhyped scifi books

Hi, one question tho: does the sexism at least slide by or is purpusefull for hating the characters u are supposed to/ are mean to be moraly gray or is it just pointless sexism just because? I'm very intrigued by it but... 👀
@BookswithEmilyFox2 жыл бұрын
Some of it might be cultural differences but you can't miss it and it's definitely pointless. Half of book 2 is about "his perfect wife who's tiny/looks like a kid, is silent and submissive and in book 3 it's heavy on the "men in the future are so feminine and it's a bad thing" vibes. It's not subtle lol

I just listened to the first two books of the Stormlight archive, and the 1st one was so slow it almost put me into a coma 😄 I really don't think it had to be this long. It seemed that the author was unwilling to move everything forward until the 2nd book, and was withholding and circling around some world building information, yet still needed to fill in 1000 pages 😄 But the second one was so much better, and I will continue the series at some point. The Kingkiller Chronicles was one of the best decisions of my life, those books will never be long enough for me, I really enjoyed every second. And it's really cool that you can choose between 2 different narrators for the audiobook, I wish more books had that. I was very happy with my choice.

I would’ve liked Priory of the Orange Tree to have been a duology itself. There are definitely parts I would’ve loved expanded on but the book was already huge. Split it in half and give me more! I’m excited for the new one next year I’m so glad you didn’t like Robin Hobb’s writing. I read all of Farseer and all of Live Ship thinking I was just missing something. I honestly feel like I’m taking crazy pills every time someone talks about how amazing her books are.

I absolutely love Hobb's books, so was happy to see them here regardless 😆 They're so intensely character-driven, though, that if you don't click with them there's deffo no point in forcing the read. I recently borrowed Way of Kings from my best friend as I was in the mood for a chunky book....I just started Oathbringer and am completely hooked so far. Those long waits between releases will hurt, but with such a large project, I'm sure it'll be worth it. (Children of Time is also my favourite sci-fi so far! I deeply love and appreciate that the non-human characters in it and the sequel feel odd to read, alien and yet totally in-line with what I'd expect from them. I can't wait for Children of Memory 🕷️🐙)

The Rememberence of Earth's Past Trilogy is by far my favourite Sci-Fi series I've ever read and I've never found anything alike. I'd highly recommend you to read "The Redemption of Time" by Baoshu if you're still not over Death's End. This is a fanfiction about what happens after Death's End, but it was found such high quality that Cixin Liu himself approved the book and it is now officially part of the series. I gave all the books in the series 5 stars and The Redemption of Time "only" 4, but it is still defenitely worth your time!

I loved The Passage and it's sequels. It's one of my favorite series/trilogies. Did not like The Wheel of Time. I think I read 2 or 3 books to say I gave it good try and then decided no more.....so, so boring. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is alright. But I expected it to be better. Something about the actual prose irked me. I enjoyed the Priory of the Orange Tree, Children of Time is one of my favorite books ever. It is brilliant. I'm a bit more than halfway through Hobb's Assassin's Quest and I am so in love with the world, the characters and Hobb's writing. I can't wait to read Liveship Traders. I hated every single second of it, don't know how I managed to push through. Maybe because everyone said it was one of the best books they'd ever read but yeah... Just torture p*rn, I felt like everything that happened was just there for shock value. All of the things that happened made the book feel way too unrealistic and disrespectful towards people who actually go through similar traumas. I thought you were overreacted Dune but then I started to read it and it was quite boring. I read about 200 pages and then I just forgot about it and never picked it up again. Anyway for me big books start at about 700 pages because we, Hungarians, are used to 500+ books because of the structure of the language. Also if the book is great I would read it fast and doesn't matter if it's long. The best example is The pillar of the Earth from Ken Follett. About 1000 pages but so engaging that you cannot put it down. I read The way of kings and didn't really feel anything special so I will probably not continue, there isn't a Hungarian translation and I just don't feel like reading it in English. Edit: The passage. I really wanted to love it but this is the example when something is long just because but on the other hand it was interesting enough that I read it but I asked continously many people about their opinion if I should get going.

As a hardcore His Dark Materials fan, I didn’t like The Secret Commonwealth, but I still make a point to buy and read every new book Philip Pullman puts out in that universe. I also bought some new special editions of the original trilogy even though I already have three editions. I call this “paying overdue taxes to Philip Pullman”. I still feel like I owe him for giving me the lesson of life that I should have been given by the education system but never got. I didn’t even know fictional characters would be morally grey before I read HDM! I’ll forever be grateful to him because of that. Buying his new books despite the quality feels natural to me.

I can really recommend the original 3 films of the Millenium trilogy. The dubbed version starring Noomi Rapace. The dubbing isn't distracting at all and the final film / book in particular was just sooo satisfying. I did appreciate the ending more visually than i did reading the book. They remade the first book in English and while Roony Mara was awesome and tbh fit the physical description of Lisbeth better than Noomi Rapace, Daniel Craig as Blomkvist just utterly ruined it for me, he's just so wooden! As for the new books by the other writer, I've read them but there is just so little about Lisbeth in them I feel as if they are just purely cashing in on the original trilogy and for me they were very mediocre at best.

I really don’t know what came over Rothfuss that made him put those 10 chapters into A Wise Man’s Fear. It added absolutely nothing to the story except change Kvothe’s personality into something close to unbearable. ****SPOILERS***** . . . I feel like it would’ve made much more sense for Kvothe to have slept with some random girl from a bar (maybe that busty redhead i forgot her name) as his first time and him going through all the awkward motions instead. Then have the lore of the fae world be told as some other separate (and more exciting) adventure they encounter on the road.

If Brandon Sanderson wrote a non-fantasy book I’d read it. Does one exist?

I have a question for you and/or your subscribers: when you read such long books, do you annotate? Chunky books intimidate me bcz I think I would forget who is who, where is where, who is connected to who, what the secret was, etc. AND, I don’t know how to annotate. It also seems like a chore if you have to go through this process just to read a book. Could anyone shed some light on this subject and help me get over this worry bcz I would really like to read these large books. Thanks! 😅

I haven’t read The Three Body problem, but a book that comes to mind that is heavy on science and technical details is The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield

You shoud read Lois McMaster Bujold, specifically the Vorkosigan series. Almost all are less than 300 pages and suuuper nice.

Agree, you picked the one book with a creepy age difference in LMB's vast body of work last time. You'd like the Paladin series, Penrick's series, the Vorkosigan Saga and The Spirit Ring.

Middlegame was such a disappointment- it had the possibility to be a successful series but there was just something missing. The magic system had high levels of potential but investing in the characters just didn’t happen for me 😢

Agreed 100% on Hobb. She has great writing but man that trilogy was exhausting and annoying. Everyone that didn't like Farseer seems like the ship one, now idk... Lol. Maybe if I'm ever super bored and nothing else to read I'll give it a try. I agree and disagree on Priory. Yes it's definitely for people who like world building a lot and a slow burn, but I absolutely hated what she did with the ending, really brought down my overall enjoyment of it. I'm afraid to read Dune, but want to try it at least D:

I found the Stormlight Archive to be far too long for what it was trying to convey, very circuitous. Not terrible but I felt Sanderson could have used a more judicious editor so he didn't end up repeating himself again and again. What's funny is that Robin Hobb can also be a bit overlong and repeat previous plot points but I don't mind in her case. The difference for me is the prose. Sanderson's prose is very simple, sometimes clunky, while Hobb's is of much better quality in my opinion and makes reading whatever she's talking about a joy for me.

Not Worth it long book 'Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas' That book is 800 pages long. The book itself is very pointless, but it really didn't need to be that long. The amount I skimmed over and skipped would've made it about 400-500 pages and even that was a little too long. Edit: Worth it (and kind of wish it had been a little longer) The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams
