Hi Emily! I am Italian and I have read the Whole Brilliant Friend series. In Italy it is now considered by many a modern classic, my Italian professor even organized an international conference where he invited the English translator to talk about the problem of translation and why she (I believe they are a woman) left words in Italian. There are also Post Grads writing thesis about this series of books, because of how ground breaking it was. I highly recommend watching the HBO adaptation as well! It is 100% faithful, all the characters are portrayed by Italian actors and talk on Neapolitan! We do not yet know who Ferrante is! We know she is a woman, but her true identity has never been disclosed.

There are a lot of romance books that do not romanticize toxic men, quite the opposite! I actually have been seeing a new trend of romanticizing the nice guys, which is awesome! I have very similar taste to you (example, I also hated “the hating game” cause I found it toxic), but I absolutely fell in love with the romance genre in the past 6 months because it’s the most fun and wholesome thing ever (if you find the right books!).

Anything by Emily Henry but also “Dial A for aunties” (the romance takes up only about 10% of the book!), “It happened one summer” for something really fun and over the top, and Abby Jimenez’ books (I find her style similar to Emily Henry’s) :)

Small thing but I’m totally adopting "unfamiliar" as my explanation when it comes to Bible stories. For some reason I always feel the need to explain that I didn’t grow up in a religious household & have no clue about any Bible stories. There’s so many references to it (supposedly) in books and I never know what to say about it.. "unfamiliar" is short, sweet, to the point & moves the conversation along lol

I feel the same about romance books. The amount of romanticized toxic relationships is really problematic. That's why I can't stop raving and recommending "Radiance" by Grace Draven, which is a fantasy romance that can be read as a standalone. It is one of if not the healthiest relationship I've ever read.

Now that i hear you talk about romance i realize that for the end of the year i'm re reading a short easy romance read. Its called Flipped &, even though it is more of a "highschool read" bc the story ends in their teens, its really a nice read. There are some points were you have some things about certain missunderstandings but to me they make sense bc they mostly happen when they are young. With the story you see them grow & how their relationship changes. The back of my edition says: " Bryce: all i ever wanted is for juli baker to leave me alone. But there was no going back, i liked her. Julie: one look at bryce loski & i became a lunatic. But all those years i liked him? I never really knew him" I think you should try it, it isnt an adult read so some things are more surface level but its super intresting. If it catches your eye but not really enough just watch the movie, its a great adaptation

(Note: I live in South Korea) Many Korean men will lose their minds if a woman publicly “comes out” as a feminist. Literally in the recent summer Olympics there was a female athlete who won 3 (3!!!) gold medals for South Korea in archery…but her hair was short (gasp!) and there were a ton of men demanding she be stripped of her medals because she “looked like a feminist.” It was absolutely disgusting. In my country the only transaction of Emily Henry is People we meet on vacation and there the characters didn't speak for quite some time because of miss communication 😅. I didn't like this book but I'll try book lovers because of you.

EMILY!!!! God damn it, Emily.... So I read Kindred. Wtf were you thinking!? That book was so depressing. Fascinating, extremely well written, and thought provoking but by the end I felt sick. I would never be able to reread it. I enjoyed it though. OEB is a great writer, I have to say. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished it.

Haha sorry (but not really!). I was feeling the same when finishing Parable of the Talents "one of the best books I've ever read and I never want to reread it!" That's how her books are lol

Look at us reading Korean lit because of idols. I read the same book because Kim Namjoon of BTS recommended it & I loved it!

I could not agree more 50 for The People We Meet on Vacation. It feels like it was written by a different author and no chemistry.

My number one most surprising book of the year was the Justice of kings which is the first grimdark fantasy I've ever read. It is so underated but it was thought provoking and amazingly well written. I loved it. Highly recommend if you are into political fantasy. 😊

I love Kim Jiyoung, born 1982. Also, the backlash against Irene when she recommended this was weird (and kind of emphasises the point of the book) because I know RM of BTS also recommended it and I don’t remember any backlash for him 🙄

I read Book of the Unnamed Midwife a year or so ago. There were parts I hated and parts I loved. I gave it 4 stars ... but still not sure I can keep reading the series. Perplexing, huh. I hate the cover of My Brilliant Friend --- but you're convincing me to try it.

My issue with “People we meet on vacation” is that the relationship felt incesteous . You’re correct, there was no chemistry. That’s my issue with friends to lovers. If it is a YA I can buy if it or if it is a short term friendship I can deal with it but to be friends for years I get the ick.

My issue with that book was also that I read the whole book with this massive buildup to ~what could have possibly happened~ and the reveal was so... anticlimactic
