LOL, you’ll associate Stephen King with that from now on! Which is pretty much the perfect pairing in my opinion because I’m not at all a fan. I liked Salem’s Lot and his non fiction book Danse Macabre. I thought Carrie, Pet Sematary, and The Dead Zone were decent. The other ten or so that I’ve read (including It, The Stand, The Gunslinger, Cujo, and Firestarter), ugh, no. I’ve also listened to too many interviews with him (like 4 or 5). When he started talking about being afraid he’d hurt his daughter - in a way that made me think he was kind of proud of it - that was the end for me.

"Eyes of the Dragon" is the only Stephen King book I kept once I'd read it. It's High Fantasy and was written because his daughter didn't want to read any of his gruesome books. It does still have plenty of spooky horror going on, an excellent villain, and I really enjoyed the family dynamics. Only about 400 pages and I LOVE the ending.

As someone who's read every SK book, here's my opinions. -The Shining... ya Jack isn't the good guy, Wendy Danny and Mr Hallerand are. -IT... i like it but ignore the ending bc even if it wasn't gross it's still dumb. -The Stand... read it 20 years and thought it was fine but sont remember much tbh. -Misery... I think it's worth it, but it has so.e things that will bother you. You did hav a french copy lol. -Carrie... good but has issues, keep in mind it's his first book and it's 51 years old. -Pet Sematary... imo his best! -11-22-63... I thought it was fine but tedious and mostly boring (unpopular opinion). -The Gunslinger... my hottest take DARK TOWER SUCKS!, and being told to try Dark Tower first was in my opinion the worst possible advice you could have gotten. -Salems Lot... it's a good one but not quite a personal fav. -the Green mile... very good! It's like Shawshank where the book and movie are very good. Apt pupil, Sleeping Beauties, Elevation, the Institute, are the ones that I remember that you've read and I didn't like that weren't mentioned above. A lot of ppl love it but imo Under the Dome is his worst ending😊

Salem's Lot is my favourite King book so far; it's very different from today's average "vampire book" that always seems to have a terrible romance shoehorned into the plot even when it doesn't make sense. I also read the Dark Half which was pretty good. I've heard great things about Misery, so that's probably my next read. The concept for this video was great. With authors as prolific as King it can be daunting trying to choose which book to start with, so it's nice to hear recommendations from someone who has tried several of his works. I would love to hear your thoughts on other authors.

In my opinion Misery is worth the read. I read the book and then watched the movie and loved both. Kathy Bates was a perfect Annie and James Caan was a great Paul. Both did wonderful jobs portraying their characters. Give it a try. I think you would probably like it. I would also recommend The Body (made into the movie Stand By Me).

I agree with pretty much everything. IT was amazing except for "that" seen. They dealt with it much better in the film.. The end was ridiculous. I loved the Bill Hodges trilogy, especially the last book. I was going to recommend it. Holly is one of my favorite characters of any writer. The Outsider is probably my favorite of all his books. It is more of an X-Files story. Loved it, and the HBO show. Holly is in it. I also remember loving The Langoliers. It is one of the stories in Four Past Midnight. Later was also really good. It is shorter. I got the audio from Libby. Great way to get it. Fun and short.

I haven’t read a lot of King’s books yet, but Pet Sematary is my very favorite. I ADORED it, one of my favorite books ever and also a book that impacted me as a reader. Great depiction of grief. I also really enjoyed The Shinning : I get why it would be triggering or too much for some people (some parts were definitely hard to read) but I loved the way he writes about the main character being the horrific element. Next favorite has to be Salem’s lot. So good, so creepy, small town vibes. I plan on reading The Stand but I’m not really into post-apocalyptic 😬 Misery will be my next read (probably).

Thanks for the reviews! I also recommend „Duma Key“. I liked it very much. I loved the description of how the main character discovered his art-painting skills and how the paintings relate to the mystery of Duma Key. And the ending had some magical vibe to it and reminded me of movies from Hayao Miyazaki (a little bit). It is pretty long though and most of the time it’s more atmosphere and less plot. But no critical scenes like you mentioned from „IT“ or „Shining“, to my recollection at least. I like the author despite of these, but I could very much not have them in his books. I‘m with you there.

I’ve read a lot of King. He is an incredibly prolific author and it’s a fair point to say that many of his books are not that good. I couldn’t get into The Stand, I had no desire to pick up The Gunslinger and I completely agree with you about Apt Pupil. More thoughts: The Green Mile is outstanding. If you liked the movie, you will like the book. Is it sometimes hard to read? Yes, but it is one of my 2 favorite King novels. My other favorite is The Shining. I understand your discomfort about his thoughts toward his wife, but as you point out it is an integral part of the story. One thing I most appreciated about this book was the characters’ back stories and how their past experiences were impacting their current behavior and situation. Don’t bother with the movie. It barely resembles the book and, IMO, encapsulates what you didn’t like about the book and totally omits what I found compelling about it. Is Misery worth the read -YES. If I were to make my own top 10 King books list, that would be close to the top. I would also recommend The Dead Zone.
@rin55Ай бұрын
I have read 3 of his books. It might have been the 1st. It went like this: I wanted the most out of my audible credit, so I sorted the entire audible catalog according to length. Idk if you can still do it these days. IT happened to be in the top 10, and King is a very known and famous author, so I got IT. It's a phenomenal audiobook. So atmospheric, vibrant and detailed. It kept me company for a month, so it was a very good investment. And the 1st part of the movie came out a month or two after I read it, so the book was still fresh in my mind. I admit that towards the end I tended to fall asleep listening and was too lazy to try to find my place in the book again, so the whole thing in the sewers is kinda blurry. Happened to miss out on the whole weirdness, then listened to the ending. I read Carrie translated into my language, really loved it. Pet Semataty I could not handle. It was too much and I did not finish it. I also almost witnessed the aftermath of a gruesome fatal motocycle accident while walking my dog and listening to it. I knew the victim very well, a close friend of my mother's. And almost walked onto the gruesome scene, the police was not on the scene yet. I was stopped by a woman, who was like, do not try to go there. That became a part of how I remember Pet Sematary. Could not help but think that book is cursed. Have not read a King book ever since. I do have Mist, so I might read that eventually.

I prefer the 90s mini TV series of The stand over the book. Misery is one of my faves. Carry has a very strong religious component. I love Pet Sematary. I have one of the first translations to Spanish of The gunslinger, and it's very confusing, but it intrigued me enough to continuing reading, some scenes really don't like them (mostly Susanne scenes) but read all the eight books and I hate the ending (mostly the last 150 pages). I cannot get over King self insert in the fifth book. Salem's lot is interesting, and one of the characters has a little cameo in the dark tower. The green mile was one of my favorites movies as teenager but I didn't read the bood for the same reason. I have to pause and look for Rita Hayworth and Shawshank redemption because the translation (book and film were translated as Life sentence) it's completly different, I like so much the film. Cujo is great. I always remember that King likes how we pronunce the j because it's the correct pronunciation of Cujo no with the english j. On writing it's interesting. Under the dome is unnecesarily long. Needful things is great if you aren't afraid of spiders, not like me. The film of Dolores Clairbone is great. Christine better than Buick 8.

We do have a very similar taste and I didn't like Gunslinger too and quit after reading book 1. Even tho I DNFed Cujo to be fair, it was a bit too slow for me. Oh and I really hated Geralds game, it was my very first DNF ever. There just doesn't happen anything. I am still searching the book by SK I really love, I do have a lot of books and I will use this video to find my next try. I thought that one of the best books by Stephen King was The Dead Zone, about this teacher who awakens from a coma after 5 years and he has special abilities that alarm him. It is one of King's older books (1979) but it was one that I remember as being very good. Christopher Walken plays this guy in the original film version with Martin Sheen as the evil presidential candidate. The dead zones are parts of his brain that do not work but he gets these "gifts" that replace them which disturb him too.

I feel like I'm the only person who's ever hated Pet Sematary lol. I read an edition with a foreword that laid out the entire plot, so on top of hating the main character and his reaction to grief (common for me, I've dealt with some major losses), there were also zero surprises throughout the book. I ended up finishing it at like 3x speed just to say I'd done it. On Writing was actually the first book I ever read by King, quickly followed by Misery. I think they're both phenomenal! I thought 11/22/63 was fine, but wildly mismarketed because it's less horror and more romantic thriller. IT is my favorite, I actually kind of love the end (ignoring the sewers lol); the fridge scene and Mike's dog were ROUGH though. Not King, but I enjoyed N0S4A2. I think it's sweet that he lets Joe contribute to his shining-verse. Iirc King referenced his son's work in Doctor Sleep.

I liked The shining, but the thing is it is kind of repetitive in some scenes and it sometimes takes too long for something to happen. I have some things that I like better in the books and some that I like better in the movie. I LOVED MISERY and I loved the book way more than the movie and Pet sematary is by far my favourite. Carrie was good, especially for the first book, but it's not my favourite. I, honestly, like the first two Dark tower books. I'm planning to do an extended reading of 24 books. Green mile was one of my favorites. I love the movie too, but in the books you have the stories of other inmates, that you don't get to know a lot about in the movie. Out of around ten that I've read, Cujo is my least favourite because the story was kind of dragged.

I also really enjoyed On Writing, even as someone who doesn’t write. I see Tommyknockers on your shelf there - I would skip that one if you haven’t already read it. I love sci-fi, but that one was long and terrible. I would also skip Insomnia, it’s long and bad too lol. Maybe skip The Talisman as well - if you’re not a fan of the dark tower you probably won’t like it either. If you find the Desperation and Regulators pair, just read Desperation - I enjoyed that one, but Regulators is awful.

Hi. I'm taking part in a friend's reading challenge (HRCYED - Hardest Reading Challenge You'll ever Do), and one of the prompts is to read a book in the top 10 of the year you were born. I'm ancient, so that book is Stephen King's It. I LOVE the 1990 IT TV series, that was phenomenal, and I have seen it multiple times. I watched the newer movie versions of IT Chapters I and II... they were good, but not as good as the 1990 version. As for The Shining... I read it over 2 months. This was a VERY difficult book for me to get through, because of Jack's acholism, and his descent into his former self. I LOVED the movie (I couldn't stand the actress's portrayal of Wendy, but I didn't mind her in the book as much). Doctor Sleep is the sequel, and it was my first attempt at reading Stephen King. I put it down very quickly, because his descriptions of the bathtub lady... No. The movie was pretty good, but if you couldn't complete The Shining book, I wouldn't watch Doctor Sleep, there's a lot of violence, a lot. I hope you will give The Shining movie a try, because the vibes in it are very different than the book. I watched The Shining TV series as a kid, but I need to rewatch it, there were some differences, but I'm fuzzy on most, except the ending with the kid at his graduation, that was a good scene. Okay, last one. Christine (my Mom's name, actually, but she goes by Tina) has been on my radar for forever. I have never seen the full movie, only about 1/2-2/3 of it. I started the book, but some of it was in 1st person (I don't like reading from the character's POV, I like being told a story), so I put it down. I've matured a bit since then, so I do plan to read it.

Your End Of Watch story reminds me of getting a season of Fargo on dvd from the library and it took me 2 or 3 episodes to realize that the discs were out of order lol. I thought it was just some weird storytelling choice by the director. Also I have mentioned this before, but please read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, it’s short and it’s one of my favorite SK books. The weirdest thing is something unbelievably similar happened AFTER he wrote the book (it is about a girl becoming lost in the woods, it’s light on gore from what i remember and the ending was perfect)

He is hit or miss with me too. You have 3 of my favorite books by him on that top 10 list: The Green Mile, Misery (it is worth it. I loved the audiobook, the narrator is so good), and 11/22/63 which is also one of my top books of all time. I think it is a perfect book. One where he didn't mess up the ending. I usually don't love time travel but I thought he did it perfectly. At the end of the day it's a lovely love story. I couldn't watch the series. I started but I didn't like the look of the world. It wasn't what I had pictured. The Stand I enjoyed a lot but towards the end the quality decreases. I don't like The Shining and It I only liked the first half. The end of It and yes that scene you mention. What the heck was he thinking? Carrie is fun. Short. I read it when I was a teen and enjoyed it. A small book I loved by him that I don't see mentioned much is The Girl who loved Tom Gordon. I think it is a great story. It's about a little girl lost in the woods and I was in there with her worried the whole time. Salem's Lot I loved the series when I was young but I think I read it when I was too old and after reading a lot of other vampire books. By then it felt like a copy which it isn't. The Green Mile is a good read even if you watched the movie. You get a lot more of the side characters and it made me care so much for the guy with the mouse. You know he is a killer but you really don't want him to die. Anyway, read 11/22/63 and The Girl who loved Tom Gordon, listen to Misery and yes read The Green Mile.

You should read Misery and On Writing, I read them last year and they are great. I´m planning to pick up Under the Dome.

I’ve read quite a few SK books; The Eyes of the Dragon was so different & I feel like it was a shorter book. I read it a long time ago but remember liking it. Can’t remember how it ended though 😅

I'm not a horror fan, so I give Stephen King a hard miss. I did see "It" at a used bookstore recently and was thinking of trying it....but thank you for that spoiler because NOPE. The only thing I know from him is "Christine," and that's because my mother (a horror movie addict since she was 13) watched the movie with me when I was like 10 and it traumatized me XD

Mr Mercedes is really a mystery were you follow Bill Hodge. It was ok, I don't love books where you follow the detective. The second book, you still follow Bill Hodge and his team (Holly), but there is a young boy added. This is my favorite Stephen King. Then you have the finally you already read. Over all it was pretty good. Not my favorite serie, but it was my first Stephen King and I enjoy my self.

I read Carrie and Dreamcatcher this month. Dreamcatcher could have been shorter. I thought Carrie was nicely done. One of his shorter books and I really connected with the characters. I’ve read several of his. Love Salem’s Lot and the Shining. It was good but a bit too long. Christine oddly gave me nightmares even though I didn’t find that one scary.

The Shining movie is not from the point of view of Jack and you can't hear his inner monologue, so it might be better for you. As you may or may not already know, the movie changes many things from the book (specially the ending), but it's a classic for a reason and I still highly recommend it. The mini-series is... a mini-series. So you can't really compare both in terms of quality. It is however more faithful to the book, since Stephen King himself wrote the script. As for Doctor Sleep, again both the movie and book are great and the movie does a great job at honoring and blending both the original movie and the books. Out of the ones you haven't read, I can highly recommend both Misery and Carrie. Both feature the effects of fanatism, but in very different ways. Dolores Claiborne and Gerald's Game are also very good and the endings don't suck! You haven't mentioned the short story 1408, but it's also worth a read. Also, all of the books I've mentioned have very good movie adaptations so should also consider giving them a watch ;)

I have read Needful Things and generally liked it HOWEVER there is a spicy dream scene between a child and his teacher so be very wary of that!!

Pet Sematary is on my TBR list since it deals with grief. Please do this with other authors. Good luck with your colonoscopy.

I've heard incredible things about Billy Summers by Stephen King, surprised it's not in this video, I can't wait to check that one out.

i actually love how It goes off the rails at the end with the cosmic horror, but the sewer scene literally made me cry it was so awful. what a way to instantly ruin the beautiful childhood friendships we spent 900 pages building up -.- a sad day to be literate indeed lmao

Salem's Lot terrified me as a young teen, I need to reread it to see if it really is that scary! Mr Mercedes is the only other King book that I've truly enjoyed.
