I pumped for 7 months and was able to feed my son and create a freezer stash that lasted until my son was 13 months. There is no way I could have done that without the Symphony Breastpump by Medela. va4life Congratulations mama!! Don’t worry you have time! Just take it one step at a time: breast pump, where baby will sleep, what car seat, what stroller, etc. Focus on one part of motherhood at a time so you aren’t overwhelmed! Also, I loved watching baby essentials videos when I was pregnant-it helped me learn a lot and decide what I wanted! I am about to be a 2nd time mom and 1st time around I was so overwhelmed and I thought I needed EVERYTHING. You don't. truly. Most of the things we buy are simply convince. Baby truly only needs you, a place to sleep, breast milk/formula, warmth, and diapers. Everything else works itself out- do not stress. It's easier said then done, but try your best not to go information overload because it is so easy to do. Congratulations, mama!

I rarely recommend the pump in style Medela breast pump at my work exactly for the reasons you mentioned; you find yourself stuck sitting close to it and it looks like a good choice to move around because of the bag, but you can't so it's a little deceiving. Medela actually has a few different pumps designed for your different lifestyle. The freestyle flex is a really good option that allows you to move around and charge it with a USB cord on the go and it's tiny but powerful like the Sonata :). Love your videos !
@chloeconroy26664 жыл бұрын
Helen Hines I haven’t tried it personally. From feedback and people’s experiences I know the pump in style is bulky and not great for mom’s with other kids to take care of as they pump since you need to sit still and wait :p it most likely won’t be as strong as their hospital grade symphony pump, but much more affordable and available to purchase and the pump itself is very good it’ll do what it’s supposed to !

If anyone has had issues making time or finding a place to pump at work Elvie has been absolutely life changing for me...in a good way. First baby I also used medela. Had to find a place and enough time to do this. I also found that the pressure of being under time pressure affects milk supply for me. Elvie allows me to pump when I want and where I want. Nobody can tell you otherwise. I also found I’m making more milk because I’m not watching it come out. This aspect is different for different people of course. I also only purchased one. So yes, it can be obvious that you are wearing it. But if you work in a fast paced environment where nobody is paying attention to you, people honestly never notice, or at least they don’t say anything 😀. I’m an RN and I am literally able to see patients and chart while pumping. I feel so empowered! Susan, thank you for your thoughts and I share some of the negatives that you do like that it’s messy to take off and positioning is REALLY important. It also needs to in tight. Tight fitting bra is necessary. But if you are in a position where pumping at work is next to impossible and you are risking losing your milk, try it! I’m so thankful for this product! Not sponsored by Elvie. I could only afford to buy one but that is working fine for me.

Oh yes! I didn’t mean to advocate for people NOT to request time to pump at work. If that works for you, ask for it and know it is your right! In my profession as an RN however, I have found that sometimes I am so busy I would need to stay late to get all of my work done if I decide to pump. Sometimes it’s so busy, stepping off the floor for long enough to sit down and pump just isn’t possible. So I have chosen this option to free myself from the constraints of a traditional pumping system.

I am a medela Pisa fan. Mainly because five years ago when I was pumping with my first child it was the only pump that offered 21mm flanges. I was also able to get and aftermarket 19mm flange for that pump which was a game changer for me. Love your videos, Susan. I am still working on getting my 7 week old baby to latch properly so mostly giving her pumped breast milk. I was renting the Medela symphony from the hospital while I was seeing how things go, but decided it would be more economical to move towards purchasing. I bought the newest pump from medela-Freestyle FLEX (came out this November), and kept the hospital grade pump a few extra days to ensure my output didn’t reduce. Loving the freestyle flex and it actually (surprisingly) allows me to get more milk than I do from the hospital grade. It’s small (can hold it in your hand), and works great. Downsides-Vibrates fairly loudly, and is a little less comfortable (due to the strong suction) than the symphony (an FYI if you are extra sensitive), but you can adjust the levels. I just wish it saved the preferred suction level after the first 2 mins of warm up mode. Sometimes I forget to turn it up and will get a bit less milk in a session than I would otherwise. But not a massive difference luckily. However, it connects via Bluetooth to an app on your phone and saves your timings of your pumps (nice feature although not necessary), and you get 24/7 access to an LC for the first month through the app as well (which I think you do with all purchased medela pumps). Haven’t used this feature yet but planning to try it out later today as I have a few BF questions specific to my baby’s latching issues. My sister used the pump in style years ago and thought it worked well, but I agree it’s likely old and bulky and there are better pumps out there now. Overall, loving my freestyle flex. Pricey (500 bucks) but worth it for me since my baby is currently getting most of her milk via pumping while I’m still working at breastfeeding, so a good pump that met my needs was worth it for me. However if you’re just pumping to get “extra” milk a less expensive option is probably the way to go if price is an issue. Oh I also love that the flex has USB plug in to charge but is wireless otherwise. Then I can easily use it and/or charge it in the car if need be. Great for on the go (especially if you have family far away and do a lot of car trips, or perhaps need to pump if you are back to work). The hands free pumping bra is also a must. I generally only watch videos and take in the info but since this pump is so new and I haven’t seen a ton of reviews out yet I thought I would share (since I have something that might actually be useful to add to the convo). Have a great day, ladies!

I heard the Elvie app shows you how many ounces you pulled or even the time frame you were pumping?!!
@jenniferarchibald75904 жыл бұрын
Taiji V the app does however it’s not accurate most of the time but you can manually change the ounces to make it correct.

it is bluetooth connected and measures close

I love the time stamp on the app! And it will even show you a timelime of when/ how much you pumped, but the measurements are way off for me. Like, I'll pump 3 oz and it'll say 1.5. It's not a big deal though bc you can easily adjust it when you finish the session.

Hi! I have a question about the bottles on the Elvie pump. Do you have to transfer milk from the included bottle to a feeding bottle? How does that work?

These reviews and opinions are all over the place. “Is it my favorite, yes... do I like it, no.” 🤨

Because that’s how we all feel about breast pumps 😂 You either feel like a damn milk cow, or you have to buy expensive stuff that might not even pump the milk out.

this is so HELPFUL susan! Thank you! My insurance only covers Medela and Ameda and looking at both in an instant, I wanna get the Ameda. But I have not done my research on it yet. Your review about it is in a nutshell and that's all I needed to hear/know. Like you said, there is no perfrct breast pump. What attracted me to this is the compact style and that it can be cordless, still has the different pump settings but straighforward. Not much to figure out and not bulky! Now I am more convince to get the Ameda, not Medela! I dont think there is anything wrong with Medela but it is definitely too bulky to take to work (since I plan to pump at work). I have a quick question though that I think you didnt get to mention or maybe I missed it. How is the sound of the Ameda pump? Is it loud or not too bad? Like is it something that I would probably not want to be on the phone while I am pumping kinda loud? Thank you!

I had a Spectra and then the hands free Liberty pump - the Spectra was great, but I didn't love being attached to a wall. I only learned later u can upgrade to one that is cordless. The liberty one is also quiet but it does have a tube connected to a pump mechanism clipped to your belt. That is a little awkward but I pumped while being in a mall. Unfortunately, it stopped working on one side after a month. I honestly at that point was tapering off pumping, so I was too exhausted to try to fix it. I would love to try the Willow pump next time or something else.

I don’t understand the statement about having to go to another room to pump with the In Style. Wouldn’t you have to do that with any standard pump??

I am wanting to use the Freemie Independence Mobile Hands Free Breast Pump. Has anyone tried this one or had experience with it? I'm in the beginning stages of researching the breast pump I want to use

Love my spectra so much. I also have an Elvie and use it only at night so I can bottle feed the baby and pump at the same time. I think I haven’t mastered how to position it right so sometimes I only get half of the milk and had to use spectra to pump again.

I’m considering purchasing the single Elvie. I currently use the Spectra S9 and I love it. I just think the Elvie would be a nice addition for traveling since it’s so discreet and has usb charging.

I also own the Ameda Mya (and am pumping while I watch your video lol). I LOVE its portability. I would agree it's the perfect middle ground pump. I pair mine with Freemie pump cups that fit inside my bra like the Elvie so I can pump while I drive. It's not super quiet so there's no way I could pump in the middle of a conference call but it's a very portable option which I love.
@klaaho4 жыл бұрын
Hey! This idea sounds so smart, how is it working for you? Was there anything special you needed to do to pair the Mya with the cups?
@mageenaoloughlin24204 жыл бұрын
@@klaaho just make sure you get the closed system cups. When I bought mine it was around Black Friday so freemies website had them on sale. Probably do now for mother's day too. Way cheaper than buying on Amazon. It worked great for while getting ready in the morning, doing dishes at night or in the car to/from work but I wouldn't recommend it for exclusive pumping or as my main setup. It's just not as strong as a regular pump setup and I would always pump a few oz less when I would just use the freemies for an entire workday. I think using it full time would damage your supply but for me it was either a short pump session in the morning or use the freemies in the car for a half hour and it helped me maintain my supply. I'm working from home now and nursing my son still at 9 months but was going strong with pumping with using them during my morning commute and will pick it back up whenever I return to work.
@klaaho4 жыл бұрын
@@mageenaoloughlin2420 thank you so much for the advice!!! So appreciate!! I see they are on sale 😁 One more question if you don't mind. You said you wouldn't use them as your primary pump, do you mean the Ameda Mya in general (like with it's original flanges ect) or the pairing with the cups?
@mageenaoloughlin24204 жыл бұрын
@@klaaho I would definitely recommend the Ameda Mya with it's original flanges as a main pump. I'm actually using it that way right now lol. I just wouldnt recommend using it with the freemie cups for EVERY pump session. It's a super convenient combo but has less suction than the original flanges so when I have the time and privacy I use those.
@mageenaoloughlin24204 жыл бұрын
@MsMillie221 I used the Medela freezer bags but I didn't pump directly into them if that's the advice you were looking for. They have worked great tho and being a working mom with a giant baby (always around 90th percentile height and weight) that's always drank the highest end of the avg ounces per day 've used used HUNDREDS of bags and never had a leak.

Hey Susan, thanks for your video. You are very talented as a v-blogger. A quick question about Elvie: since it's not as strong-powered as other ones, will it decrease the milk supply? Will it be good enough for a FTM to build her milk supply from the beginning? Hope to hear from you soon!
@Shag5294 жыл бұрын
FTM here and I literally spent this entire morning researching tons of pumps - decided the Ameda sounded great, then watched this video and was totally affirmed! Thank you for your recommendation!

I just started using the Mya and am so happy I picked it this time around (I had the pump in style with my first baby). My daughter was a preemie so I also have a hospital grade pump at the moment and I actually have a better output from the Mya then the pump I’m renting.
@b2h3164 жыл бұрын
Is the hospital is using the Medela Symphony, the parts are interchangeable with the Medela swing which seems to be very similar to the Mya. If you already have parts for the Medela one that is

Yes, with the elvie double check that's all the pieces are on correctly.. if not ot leaks soo bad and u might not get suction. But I do love it when I'm chasing my 2 year old lol #2Under2

Completely agree with you! A friend lend me her medela and I hated it. Only used it at home. It is way to powerful and loud! And worst, too many parts to wash and put back together. I got the Ameda Finesse through my insurance and loved it so much. Gentle but powerful and quiet. Used it daily for my work hours. Even though the Elvie sounds great in theory, I agree that would not work for a very frequent pumping mom.

Usually if your milk supply doesn't increase it means the suction cup part is either too small or too big for your nipples. Changing it might make a big difference

I am using the blue Spectra pump with no success. Only able to pump out 10% of my normal let down. When baby is sucking, I generally can catch 60ml to 100ml of let down with a hakka. And hakka with a deep tissue massage machine works best to get almost 200ml of milk. But I don't own this machine, will have to return in a month to my friend. So am looking for my main pump.

I'm curious about the suction on the ameda mya, is the suction the same? Or is it stronger on the medela?

I used the avent manual. I found the electric ones never worked well for me and did not get a lot of milk expressed. The avent manual I had a lot of luck with and could easily pump 5 to 8 ozs in one session. Down side is your hands and wrists get very sore.
