There was nobody out so they had to hold up. Had there been two out they would have crossed the plate much sooner. The second base runner is more vulnerable than the first base runner because second base is closer to the outfielders so it's a shorter throw, so the first base runner can move up farther and still have time to get back to first if the ball is caught. The second base runner doesn't have that luxury. The Shuto was probably already close behind Ohtani when they realized it wasn't going to be caught.

Japan's broadcasting was by the far the most energetic and I love it but its actually ironic to call it far elite. In fact its so devoid of content its hilarious. Its essentially MURAKAMI HIT IT! MURAKAMI... MURAKAMI!!!! AAAAAHHHH OHTANI IS COMING HOME AND.... SHUTO HAS COME BACK. GOODBYE (means Walkoff in this scene). The other announcer didn't even get a word in because he was so awed that Murakami hit the ball and was saying GO GO COME HOME. They essentially just turned into fans.

You know, I'm glad Team Mexico was visibly sad and disappointed. Because it shows they wanted it, that the WBC actually MEANT something to them. For years baseball has been on the decline in popularity. This is my first time watching the WBC and I'm so fired up. So many amazing, heart-stopping games throughout the tournament. I really hope that baseball sees a surge of popularity after the WBC.

Pretty good point. I’m American and this whole attitude of “wbc doesn’t mean anything” is so annoying. Mean anything to who? 4 out of the 5 Dominican mlb players on their roster said winning the wbc would mean more than the World Series and the other said it would be tied. There was a player who was called by his country’s president and asked to play. The guy on Taiwan who is trying to make the mlb wasn’t gong to play and got so much backlash from the Taiwanese that he basically had no choice. I’m going to misspell his name so I won’t try but the Cuban national on the Mexican team was granted citizenship directly by the president because he said he’d play if he got it. I’d say the wbc sure seems to mean something to a lot of people.

1:50 Commentary guy (ex. NPB pitcher) talks to another commentary Kazu Sasaki (Ex. MLB/Mariners closer) "Closers have tough times, right?". Although they were rooting for Japan, they feel the tough time Gallegos is facing.

Yes that was Makihara, who also did a couple of years as the closer, so he knows how difficult it is😆
