Wasn’t Jesse Glover not only Bruce’s first student, but also literally the first friend he made in the U.S.? I find that idea cool. Jesse Glover was probably Bruce Lee’s first black friend, and Bruce Lee was probably Jesse Glover’s first Asian friend. Although I understand they had a rupture at some point, ultimately Jesse Glover literally dug Bruce Lee’s grave in reverence and respect to him. How many people have friends like that? Damn!

I was wondering why Joe Lewis made so many contradictory statements about Bruce Lee ? In some interviews, Joe Lewis criticized Bruce Lee by saying that he wasn't really good, that he didn't give good kicks, that he wasn't a fighter etc . While Joe Lewis himself wrote in a book that Bruce Lee had enabled him to improve his kicking, that Bruce Lee was one of the people who hit him the hardest (while Bruce Lee was less heavy) that he was the fastest guy he had ever seen, and that Bruce was really excellent at bridging the gap. Joe Lewis even said in a video "For a while I was able to get that punch in on Bruce Lee but he always used to go into that little Zen, Alpha state and then you couldn't get anything through. You probably couldn't even hit him with a bullet, he was so fast". Louis Delgado, who fought Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis, said " I have never seen anyone like Bruce Lee. I have met and sparred with several karate men, but Bruce has been the only one who has baffled me completely. I am completely in awe when I fight with him. " The great judoka Haward Nishioka is quoted as saying to Fiaz Rafiq " He would practice with people such as Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis who were very quick, very fast and very tough. And also Bob Wall. Actually, he was just too fast for them. He was just so quick, he would go in and out before you could even get started. " So how is it, if we are to believe Joe Lewis' statement, that Bruce Lee was so bad, but at the same time was able to have all these abilities, which is to impress someone like Delgado and Nishioka, and yet Joe Lewis was willing to waste his time with someone who was not so good, but still allowed him to improve his performance and techniques?

I have read virtually every book ever written about Bruce (since I began training in wing chun in 1975)… And yes,Jesper Clover gets an honorable mention. But there are TWO books that reveal Bruce Lee’s thinking and his approach to fighting principles, strategies, and techniques that are head and shoulders above all other books… Precisely because Bruce Lee wrote them. TAO OF JEET KUNE DO BRUCE LEE - JEET KUNE DO (Bruce Lee’s commentaries on the martial way) This book came out many years after the TAO OF JKD and was compiled and edited by John Little. The material consists of hundreds of pages written by Bruce Lee that didn’t make it into the TAO.

That was a sick episode. Lots to talk about. Trying to get some of the artists who visit your site hip on jkd ideas. I do all my own stuff. A good way to describe it would be like this. 1. LEFT LEAD against a righty. My left hand PAK SAO, bong sao, whatever hand we shall choose, makes contact. Immediately that same hand will become BUI GEE. The target is that outside closest eye. We ride his hand like a ramp. From far out even. Way far out like a FOOK COVER with the pinky down, or a flat PAK. Either one. Bong we just drop the elbow to BUI GEE. But anyways, so once we touch that eye with all three fingers pointed into a tight triangle. 2. INSIDE WAN JEUNG. Inside thread with the SIDE PALM right hand. 3. CHEUNG left hand pins the elbow straight punch. 4. Right hand LOW PUNCH. 5. UPPERCUT right arm again. 6. HOOK PUNCH right hand. 7. PAI JAANG right arm. 8. KICK BELOW THE WAIST. ❤😂that’s something realistic id be teaching people.” As far as newer jkd. I know you understand these terms. 😉🤘🏼💡💯

That was great as always! And I like it very much you guys liked my question about the fights between the Lee characters in his movies. Its top 3 among all of your podcasts to me, and i dont get tired in watching it. So Alex and Co, should you ever do a second part about this subject (the Lee movie characters) let me know, because I could add some ideas and questions about these characters and adding more (like Kato or Li Tsung). About this podcast: Imo you told it like it is. There is not one single book who has all the answers. You have to seperate Bruce in martial artist, actor and private man, basically read about the professional man and private man seperatly. There is not a single book who covers all in detail. The books you mentioned are in my list too. Polly is a A-Z bio which covers all fields, but not so much in dept like books who are only about one certai field (which should be obvious).

Great episode Alex!! I do have the Making of ETD and you're that all the things that ate out now regarding Bruce Lee some things in that are kinda iffy. I also have Linda's book as well which is written extremely well. However when you had John Little on the podcast talking about Wrath of the Dragon he mentioned something about Jesse Glover taking Bruce to hang in the hood with at a pool hall and there was an "altercation " but he never said what it was nor wrote about it in the book. Peace!! KFG rules!!

What you said about reactions when attacking myths is so true. I can only imagine the hostility when deconstructing the Xi Lu/Five Elders of Shaolin myth. Well regardless, keep on attacking those myths(!) because they have no place in serious history, though they do make for great Shaw Brothers movies. 😁 * By the way, I know exactly what it's like to face that kind of hostility. I explore the history of youth culture during the 1950s, as I am an early rock n' roll fan. When I point out to some "nostalgics," who love claiming that youth gangs of the 1950s, supposedly, "never shot, nor killed anyone, nor did drugs back then," that real youth gangs of the 1950s most certainly did murder each other, often with guns, and that heroin was a part of the subculture, I've gotten the whole, "You're sick! You need help!" type of angry responses, just because I want to be truthful. I'm guessing you'll probably get the whole "You have no respect, how dare you!" type of responses when pointing out that Ng Mui, Bak Mei, and the other characters (from the novel "Everlasting") are indeed, fictional characters. People really love their mythology, I guess because truth requires actual research and thinking.

Sparring too soon, and becoming an effective fighter are such great topics. I left Wing Chun decades ago. Steve Lee Swift spoiled it for me. I didn't look up every Wing Chun Sifu in the world, but after being at Steve's Chicago school in the early 80s with all the students he had that could actually use it...well I never found Wing Chun after that that looked like that or worked. I admit that there are plenty, but I have never found KZbin videos showing any Wing Chun fighters who could effectively use Wing Chun without changing it like Steve, Simon Lau and Wai Po could. I admit that all his students that could use it were beyond the 3rd stage in the 18 month 3 stage wall bag process, but I still have never come across any KZbin videos of Wing Chunners who can use it like Steve, Simon and Wai Po could, without adding boxing footwork and the boxing bobbing and weaving. Though Simon, Wai Po and Steve all hide it in Wing Chun videos of them ha ha. Well you see the real Wing Chun they use with all the palms, elbows and kicks to the chest in some of Steve's old DVDs like Mind of the Wing Chun Fighter 1 - 3 and extreme Wing Chun, but other than that I've never found that kind of Wing Chun outside of his early 1980s Chicago school. Like on fight commentary breakdowns for example it's always the guy who only knows the straight blast, can't use the traditional Wing Chun kicks palms or elbows, and doesn't know the bong sau's only a blink of the eye. Or it's someone bobbing and weaving or doing MMA, but calling it Wing Chun. I know they exist, I mean Kung Fu Genius, you guys are back and forth to Hong Kong and I know you guys know it and can use it; but you guys are a rarity on KZbin.

Pumped. That’ll be awesome. On the sparring thing. I think it steals from creativity. I think it locks people into modes where they can maybe beat a few dudes in the room, but that information, that cue, winds up being the catalyst to sink his productivity. Because it causes injuries mainly. But on the other hand, sparring FULL POWER with a warning ahead of time, and helmets, can prove worthy. Sparring with helmets and drool cups at FULL BLAST. Just fight. 😎☕️☑️💯have a couple drinks first if they want. Try it... it works. Just HAVE A FIGHT real quick. 😉🤘🏼💯
