Cold Steel Recon Tanto SK5: The Cold Steel Recon Tanto was designed for today's modern warriors. A much loved and appreciated knife by the Military and Law Enforcement Special Units, it was developed to withstand the harshest abuse and the toughest possible conditions. The signature Cold Steel Tanto point is specially reinforced to stay sharp even when encountering modern body armor - tested right in their HQ by punching through 55-gallon steel drums! This classic design is now available with SK-5 high carbon steel. It is the Japanese equivalent of American 1080, a high carbon steel with carbon between 0.75%-0.85% and 0.60%-0.90% manganese. As quenched, it has a hardness near Rc 65 and produces a mixture of carbon rich martensite with some small undissolved carbides. The excess carbide increases abrasion resistance and allows the steel to achieve an ideal balance of very good blade toughness with superior edge holding ability. It takes its namesake from the Japanese martial, or underworld where the word "Kobun" means "soldier". It's a fitting name for a knife like the Kobun, which was effectively designed to be "a good soldier". In profile it closely resembles our Master Tanto, but it sports a thinner blade, and that supports its main function; to be a light weight boot knife. Like our Tantos, it features the Tanto styled reinforced point. This contrasts sharply with most boot knives on the market today which are notorious for their paper thin points which are easily broken or bent. In contrast, the Kobun's point is highly resistant to bending or breaking because it is reinforced by the full thickness of the blade's spine which runs almost to the very tip of the blade. The Kobun's deeply checkered Kraton handle is designed to offer minimum bulk with maximum grip. Its cross section was made as thin as possible (approximately 1/2 inch), then contoured to resist turning or shifting in the hand. The Kobun comes complete with a Secure-Ex sheath. I bought a Cold Steel Recon Tanto San Mai 3 when they were made in Japan. Later on I bought a Kobun. I like both. I am a fan of both Cold Steel and their Tanto Point. In fact, I own 9 Cold Steel Tanto Point blades! Anyway, nice video!

I have 2 kobuns, the original production in aus8, and a lynn thompson signiture in s35vn. Love em both. Very sharp. Light, thin profile, easy to carry. Good retention and sheaths. Not too expensive. Very usable, and dependable. Cold steel rocks

From a value standpoint, Cold Steel is the way to go. I finally broke down and ordered a Master Hunter in San Mai' Everyone seems to love it. Even Ethan Becker sings it's praises, lol. I think I need to add me a tanto to the collection. I have no tanto fixed blades.

Just got a Recon today.. it's all you need.. it could do the job in it's sleep.. to say the least.. I'll probably buy more of these to have around the house.. the best part is you can buy three for price of Tanto 2. Touch the point and lightly feel the blade and you will be very impressed.. mine is self defense only so it is now sitting there waiting for it's day to shine.

I have the Kobun and its a nice carry, slim and all. Just wish CS would make it so that you could rotate the belt clip, and carry the knife upside down. That way it would be a lot easier, and faster to pull.

i also carry the kobun most days or just have it in my truck but the handle did feel a little small for me so i wrapped it in gutted 550 cord and it’s perfect for me now i also carry it on my waist so i flipped the clip upside down and on the opposite side(of how it came out of the box) and it’s a lot smoother release! just my thoughts tho! great video and love the other blades as well

Maybe just me but I dislike the word "budget". It suggests the product is potentially of lower quality which is of course not necessarily true. It feels like bad labeling from the outset and if you have one just remember it is "budget".

I put a little of the lube on each side of the handle wear it rubs into the sheath to hopefully reduce wear

I think they are a little bit to cheap. Yeah the Mini Recon, thinking about that one as well. Still thinking that Cold Steel died when they reached their absolute best era. The Warcraft Tanto is a nice piece of 3V! I gifted one to my daughters boyfriend for camping. I was supposed to get it to do a video , But you know how that goes. Cold Steel Definitely changed when GSM Outdoors took over! The prices on some of the new premium blades are ridiculous and the steel choices on some of the budget line?!?
