I purchased one of the Cold Steel Master Tanto knives in 1985-86 when they first came out. I still have and carry that knife. If this knife holds up anywhere near as well as the Master Tanto, then Cold Steel has another winner!

I love the Kobun. It's slim and a great fixed blade EDC. It's extremely slicy as well. Obviously not as rugged as the Revon Tanto or some of the other CS fixed blades, but as a general purpose knife it's great.

I think the Kobun would work for bushcraft, especially if the user has some knife skills/talent. I like the strong tip and the handle is grippy, even when wet. It is a great value at $34. Thanks Bryan.

I recently saw a KZbin video featuring the Kobun. There was no speaking but it appeared to be a Scandinavian man doing all kinds of wood craft with a Kobun. He was feather sticking, batoning all kinds of things that I wouldn't expect a Kobun to do well but it did. He did stop and sharpen the knife once. It was surprising what the Kobun could do.

I love Cold Steel products, have many of them, including that one. They quit production some years ago for a while and I got it on close-out for $20, the made in Japan version. Nice knife, not really designed for outdoors camping type use, definitely a fighting knife. If I'm fighting with a knife it means all my ammo is gone LOL.

I had that knife up until my second to youngest daughter decided she liked it. I haven’t replaced it yet and I’m not sure I’m going to. The handle was a bit thin for my hand. I’ve got the Master Tanto, Magnum Tanto II and the Magnum Tanto XII, so I’m pretty well taken care of as far as Tanto knives go. I even have the Voyager XL Tanto for a folder. All of them are great knives. Cold Steel knives are never given the credit they deserve.

With over 300 sporting knives in my collection , the Kobun in my favourite fixed blade whether on me while hiking or under a suit coat or in my laptop bag while working. Large enough for my tacticool uses and durable enough for camping while being light and nimble enough to have around me daily. I put a tek lock one and an inside wait J-clip on another. I have even neck carried it for a while. I always appreciate your knife throwing test. I need to find a decent youtube tutorial to practice this fun skill so I won't destroy my drywall or furniture. Thanks for these reviews.

Love the Kobun, I bought 2 of them I was so impressed with the feel. Light weight, fast in the hand, I found them to be acceptably sharp. The handle is a joy, the knife feels very secure when holding it. And it just feels to be the right size. My only wish is that I would of liked to see it come with a steel point on the pommel. And the Securex Sheath does hold the knife perfectly secure and it's quiet on the controlled draw. Excellent concealed fix blade carry.

Thank you for testing this knife. I was planning to get another master tanto but think the kobun size and weight makes it preferable as a defensive weapon. Also throwing it looks easier than the chunkier master tanto. You have me convinced. It’s gonna be either the Kobun or the Recon 😁👍🏻

Very nice blade. I have a Cold Steel Tanto with the brass finger guard and butt cap from back when they were being made in Japan. It was razor sharp out of the box and that is how it has stayed over these many years. I would have to be in extremely dire straits to mar up that blade. I shiver just thinking about it. I have other knives for that kind of activity. If the Kubon is anything like my Tanto you can see that all the angles on the blade are perfectly symmetrical. Going back to your Randall knife, I believe SOG Knives still makes one that is similar to the Randall for about half the price. You could put it through the usual paces as a stunt double for the Randall. Enjoy all your blade reviews.

For a boot knife PM2 vs the Kobun? There are + and - for both. It's a push. I've had the PM2 for years. I just got the Kobun. I already wrapped the handle because it was to thin and tossed the clip. I don't carry a boot knife (felony in my lovely state). The peacemaker2 (or smaller peacemaker 3) are a really good cheap knives. The PM2 sheath is for a boot knife and kinda a PTA to draw and wonky to replace.. You can trim it to be more user friendly and draws a lot better. It is simple. If you want I can tell you how. But, I just put in a ~$10 Kabar 5 1/2" leather sheath and call it a day for camp use. Both PM2 and Koban fit that sheath. The PM2 clip is small and tight and will jack up a boot. The blade is shaped like the Mora 2000, Kansbol, and Bushcraft Forest except wider. More versatile than the Koban. I cut off the top guard on the PM2. The PM2 steel is 4116 stainless. It sharpens easy but dulls really easy. PM2 has 90 degree spine. Koban spine needs to be sharpened to strike a ferro rod or scrape. The Koban is aus 8. (Taiwan or Japan?) For camp I prefer the 2000 or Kansbol. First impressions, the Koban clip is sketchy. If you don't push off with your thumb the whole sheath pulls out. It depends on the knife retention of the sheath? This is getting way to long. So, I'll stop

@@toothless-tiger Morakniv Kansbol or 2000. Stainless steel only 4 inches. Kansbol has 90 degree, 2000 you will have to make if you want. They are the standard. BPS knives puts out the "Adventurer" ~$40 which is the size and shape you are looking for but NOT stainless. 1066 carbon steel, leather dangler with ferro rod. Made in Ukraine. Blade will rust if not cared for. I sanded of the hawksbill from the pommel to make it more of a broomstick handle. Love this knife! If this is for a camp knife and you are deciding between the PM2 and Kobun. PM2 in a kabar 5 1/2" sheath (black) no question. Mora makes a 5.8 inch blade Mora all around 5.8" carbon $23.31 (1 left) click on 5.8" not 4" Mora 748mg 5.8" stainless $ 36.95 amazon Good luck!

@@SurvivalOnPurpose "A samurai that throws his sword throws his soul." Outside of fun it is the last ditch effort of someone that is skilled with the knife. The last resort. If successful you can injure your opponent. Maybe injure or distract an attacking animal. Outside of that... IT IS FOR FUN! Have fun. Plus crap knives often fly crappy if their balance is off. I like the center balance test some do as well to find the COG of blades. Where the breaking point is when it tips. Hilt? Handle? Or somewhere on the blade itself. Tells a lot.

Aus 8 is a perfect steel for wet, damp, and swampy environments. Yes there are better steels as far as edge retention and toughness are concerned (like CPM 3V) but Aus 8 beats all the "super steels" in corrosion resistance. Check the stats for yourself. The Kobun would be a great boat knife, fishing knife, or self defense knife. It fills those specific roles very nicely.
