Canon SL3 with the EFS 17-55 2.8. Been running this setup for a while now. Mic is the AT2020 through a focusrite scarlett solo. Absolutely loving this setup. A bit of shopping around can get you a like new used combo of the camera and lens for under 1k. Mic and interface are barely over 200 together. A couple simple neewer studio lights for just over 100 bucks gives me way more light that i need. Absolutely would recommend this setup to anyone. Any upgrades beyond this are very minor. You get a top level studio quality broadcast in all regards for around 1200-1300 bucks depending on the camera deals you can find.

You don't "need" it if you're ok with the lower resolution and image quality: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3_VnpJuj7enhtE It definitely works (and it's free - yay!) but it depends on how important the higher resolution is to you (you don't get 1080p with the software at this time)

The only real advantage to using Canon's webcam option is if your camera doesn't have a clean HDMI out like say the 200d but otherwise i'd go with a capture card or even one of the cheap chinese knock-offs for half the price i have several of them with good results

As always - Extremely helpful and very informative! As an example! I had recently bought the Canon 200D DSLR and was very impressed with it as an upate from my 600D! BUT! Along came the 250D! And I had such regrets! A newer 200D - WITH 4K and eyefocus! Such FOMO! BUT! THEN! Along came you - Matt - explaining that shooting 4K would mean an additional CROP factor! Something that I have NOT SEEN IN ANY OTHER REVIEW or found information about anywhere else! Keep up the good work! KNOW that YOU ARE APPRECIATED and doing a bloody good job! Love and hugs! I've just seen a verified comment on this cameras amazon uk listing by Swav saying: "However, the predecessor of this model the 200D/SL2 had a feature of being able to disable the 30-minute auto power off that most cameras have. Any streamer who is in the professional space knows that having a DSLR rather than your standard webcam is a very nice addition and adds to your streams overall quality significantly. The 250D has the same setting, however at 30 minutes of standby the camera asks for a button to be pressed to resume shooting mode, which makes this feature cancel itself out so if you want to use this for the purpose of a streaming camera, I suggest downloading the app and switching a setting (I chose daylight savings) every 25 minutes or so to stop this screen appearing to your viewers. It's a slight disappointment as the 200D did not do this at all but still it is a fantastic camera for the price and would still recommend it." Does this still apply, or was it firmware patched out? Because that's not something I particularly want to do. Other than that, this camera seems like the perfect investment for streaming and I'd happily take the plunge.

I actually just bought my SL3 about 2 weeks about and have it so my girlfriend can stream and so I can take some shots during my trips or vacations and it's been working great. For the price, I still feel like this thing packs above it's weight class as it can compete with other cameras that are easily $300 to $400 dollars more. My thing is with lighting, I'm still figuring out how to dial in ISO, Aperture, shutter speed, etc. but my big deal is getting lighting.

THANK YOU for all of your very helpful and instructional videos. For my live streaming and Zoom video meetings I'm using the Canon SL3. For high-quality audio I decided to go with a Rode NT1 XLR cardioid condenser studio mic. The Rode NT1 is connected to a Zoom H6 as the audio interface supplying phantom power (which can also serve the dual purpose as an audio recorder). I run the audio out from the H6 into the mic in on the SL3, and then clean HDMI including audio from the camera to a Magewell II HDMI->USB capture card and then into the PC. For lighting I'm using a pair of Neewer 660 LED dimmable bi-color video photography floor lights with a remote wireless light control. While I may have gone a bit overboard, the overall video and audio quality are I believe worth the incremental extra investment to be able to provide a really high-quality video and audio experience. While it takes up a little more floor space, I decided to go with floor stands for the lights and mic along with a floor tripod for the SL3 camera to eliminate the chance of transferring any vibrations from the office desk to any of the equipment that would somehow show up in the video or audio. Power is supplied by AC power adapters to the equipment for unlimited run time and no concerns about running out of battery power.
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын
That's a super nice setup, and I completely understand the choice of going with dedicated stands. If you have the space, it's for sure the way to go. Super appreciate you being part of and contributing to the community.
@bobbtopgun4 жыл бұрын
THANKS, I REALLY appreciate your feedback. I did run into a problem when running the SL3 on the AC power adapter. The small rubber tab on the side of the battery compartment that the AC adapter cord runs through puts some downward pressure on the power adapter cord. After a while that pressure caused a very small plastic protrusion on the inside of the battery door to stop making contact with a very small micro switch inside the battery compartment which caused the SL3 to stop working. Even though the battery compartment door is still closed and locked, the camera would not work because the micro switch was not fully engaged. To remedy the situation, I changed the position of the camera on the mounting plate of the tripod so that the battery compartment door is now fully supported by the tripod's mounting plate. BINGO - no more problems. Just curious if you have ever heard of or encountered this problem? THANKS for your help!

Hi! Really like your videos. I'm asking a question here hoping you have an answer. I started using an SL2 to replace my webcam. Have you ever had problems with delay in the image? My audio is coming from a Shure MV7 via USB, I can't figure out how to make sure the sound and the image stay in sync. It seems when I speak, there's a few miliseconds lag with my image. That said, even wiithout factoring in the audio, I still feel like there's a lag when I look at the image on the PC vs on the camera's screen. If you had any tips it'd be great. Couldn't find it in your other videos. Cheers!

Greetings. Just wanted to give you a quick update. You helped me by suggesingt the SL3 & Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 outfit. I use it straight USB cable into the laptop using Canon's software. The battery last a little over 3 hours with the LCD off. Great sub $1K outfit delivered if one shops carefully. I've already used it for teaching a fair bit. For the $, excellent results. I do hanker for an even shallower depth of field and even better details, so I may upgrade to the RP and larger aperture lenses. (I'm not sure if you compared this with the RP but I assume that the RP can do all that the SL3 can do.) Thanks for your excellent help.

I totally agree with you on the importance of audio. It's unbelievably underrated by many people, and I hate listening to the compression artifacts and bad sound quality, so I rather stop watching than continue to bear more of the sound sh*t. So I've made sure when I'm online with my clients or in zoom meetings that my sound is impeccable. A very helpful video, even if you are "only" looking for information to make your online coachings and videoconferences a better experience.

@@TechGearTalk have you considered making a video on how you can improve skype or zoom sessions, conferences? It should be very similar to a streaming video, but with a few twists. I know a lot of self employed / freelancers, especially in the consulting and coaching business are desperately looking for this information and wouldn't look at videos on streaming.
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын
Good idea! What would be the twist you envision?
@hypnosecoachinghombach75174 жыл бұрын
@@TechGearTalk twist might not be the correct word. What I meant with twist is mainly a different focus on the set up. Most of the technology that you use to enhance life streaming is the same, or very similar to having a zoom / skype / webex / microsoft teams / etc session or conference, but as it so is, most people will not see the similarities in the first place. And of course, there are differences, but not as many as a lot of people believe. Yesterday e.g. I attended an online webinar for hypnotists who want to do online sessions. Just imagine, most of the participants didn't know that it makes a difference whether you use WLAN or a cable, many don't even take into account upstream velocity. etc. Many don't have dedicated rooms but use rooms where you can hear the street noise from outside. Or they sit in their office or practice room which leads to different lightning situations. I'm sure you have used your streaming equipment for online consulting and with your ability to make really good and helpful tutorials not only for beginners, you can help a lot of people there!

The good news is that the audio delay was fixed by just setting both the Zoom input mic and the video to Camlink 4K on Zoom settings. I believe setting the mic to Camlink 4K just picks up the camera’s mic. It’s far from ideal but I may try a mic that hooks up directly to the camera’s physical mic input as I’m not sure that the USB mic would eliminate the delay.

I’m back with another question! How would you route audio out from your Focusrite Scarlett directly into the EOS 250D mic input, to maintain audio/video sync going out through HDMI into the capture card?
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын
Hi Drew. I have never attempted that because the audio is already in the computer at that point. My guess is that since there is already a syncing issue, it would just feed out of sync audio to the camera. I normally just correct it in OBS with a delay. Hope that helps.
@DrewInMotion4 жыл бұрын
Tech Gear Talk it would be great if we could adjust delay at in the OS, since most videoconferencing apps don’t have delay settings.

This is a brilliant overview! I've got a set up right now that works perfectly, with the one exception that is leading me to question the camera I'm using. My rig starts with an older CanonT31 and is a great fit from a quality and tone perspective. Capture device is the Elgato Cam Link to my Mac and I've successfully live streamed to multiple platforms using OBS and Restream. HOWEVER - the Canon's LiveView setting- which appears to be required in order to display the feed, automatically shuts off by default after 30 minutes, to protect the sensors. I am hoping that this is NOT the case with the SL3 250 shown here?

Additionally - I'm having to use Magic Lantern to produce a "clean" HDMI layout when streaming. :(

I’m having a problem trying to livestream with a M6 MarkII, Capture Card, and USB Snowball Ice and the audio being out of sync. The only way I can get the audio to sync is to not use the usb mic and use a mic plugged into the camera. Any thoughts?
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. It's a common issue because the audio from the computer is processed at a different rate than the video from the capture card. I use OBS and there is an audio offset option, so you can just play with +/- milliseconds until it sounds perfect. You do this once and it's good forever. Hope that helps.
@RyanLennoxBradley4 жыл бұрын
A Samson (NOT Samsung) Q2U mic would have been better. That way you can upgrade to XLR once you are ready to upgrade audio and buy a XLR interface without having to buy a new microphone. It is also dynamic, so the mic is more directional and picks up less background noise.
@RyanLennoxBradley4 жыл бұрын
Also, it is both XLR and USB depending on whether you have a XLR setup or not.

I purchased the Canon camera you recommended several months ago and I've been spending months acquiring the right combination of DC coupler and AC adaptor. I did not know it would be this complicated. Also, the pure HDMI out setting on this camera is greyed out and unavailable and I have no idea why. I'm hoping that when I finally have the power situation corrected I'll be able to select HDMI out. I had no idea this would be so complicated. Definitely not plug and play for me.

Not exactly a budget build. First, you don’t need a capture card with Canons now; EOS Webcam Utility is free software from Canon. Second, you can get a 10” ring light for under $45. These come with tripods so spending more on that multi-mount is the opposite of budget. Third, you said a $150 mouse was a good price? You can find a gaming mouse for half that (Roccat). Finally, the Stream Deck is way too expensive to be considered budget. You can get the Touch Portal app (pro $9.99) and buy a $35 Fire tablet to run it off of. Now, your video is good quality with great info, it’s the use of the word “budget” that I’m disagreeing with.

Oh, sorry, "budget dslr" not "budget setup". Yes, I know about the EOS Webcam Utility (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3_VnpJuj7enhtE but we don't get 1080p - for now - we'll see what happens when it's out of beta). You can definitely get the ring light (I don't mind the "ring" in the eye, but some people do). Really appreciate you taking the time to contribute! (going to check out Touch Portal - do you use it?)

Hey man, hopefully you see this message! So I've been looking for a streaming solution for a while so I'm glad I found this video. I went through and bought the SL3, bought the 4K Cam LInk and the mini hdmi required. I just opened everything up on obs but the video quality is very choppy looking. Not clean at all and I'm trying to figure out what's going on. I have the setting set to FHD Clean, not 4k like you said. Let's say I'm waving my hands around in the air, it just doesn't look smooth at all, it's almost like it has choppy frame rates. Any insight on this is appreciated. Thank you and great video

Hi there. Let's see if I can help. If you are streaming at 30 frames per second, then your shutter speed should be 1/60 of a second. If you're streaming at 60fps, then it should be 1/120

@@TechGearTalk Hey thanks for the response. On the camera, when I'm using the TV mode along with the HDMI connected to the camlink/obs it doesn't let me adjust the frame rate or shutter speed. Great video! Love your recommendations. Question: if you were investing in a new camera today primarily for video streaming/occasional video/photo work, which of the following would you recommend? Canon EOS250D or is it better to get the EOS RP instead? Or something else already? I already have some EF "L" lenses because I own the 5D Mark II. Attempting to stay with Canon because of my lens ecosystem. I get that the price difference between the 250D and RP (with EF lens adapter) is about 600 US$ (where I live), so not sure if it's worth it to future proof myself with mirrorless.
@TechGearTalk4 жыл бұрын

Hey your video is great! I have a particular question, I wonder if you can help me with. I have a Canon Eos R and in the power savings menu you can turn off/disable auto power off. Which is great when you're streaming. But everytime I turn off the camera the power saving options get reset and I need to disable the auto power each time I power on the camera again. The reason I ask is I'm hoping to setup a zoom room with a DSLR with HDMI capture card. So I want the process to be as easy as possible for other users. Ideally I want the power settings to stay disabled so that if the user turns On/Off the camera They can just launch a zoom meeting and they never need to worry about automatic shutdown You mentioned that when Clean HDMI is set is automatically disabled the camera auto shutdown? Is this feature only on 250D or would it also work on the Eos R? The 250D interests me as its cheaper and migjt fit the tasks better since it has better AF in video than the EOS R.

I first thought the Canon M50 would be my choice, but then I have to decide between having decent quality AND autofocus (by using USB) or having very good quality WITHOUT autofocus (by using HDMI Out and a capture card).
