I bought the R8 and the stabilization is good. I got a dummy battery with a USB C connected to my external 100 watt Power Delivery power bank. Z9 does 2 hours and 5 minutes. I do 4k 30 in vehicles and 4k 24 when walking. Overheating is overrated. In my sling bag i carry the 28mm pancake, 50mm (nifty fifty) and the 16mm lenses. I have seen no content about in camera mode about the 2x and 4x zoom. It's fantastic for the closeup shot and with the 50mm = 100 and 200 who would need a teleconverter. When putting on the a telezoom like my 100-400mm the pics are fantastic plus the video is excellent. I use full IPB and the picture quality is excellent. Cheers!

Thanks John! A good no nonsense, succinct review. For someone like me with EF lenses who hasn’t bought into RF yet, the LUMIX S5II is looking very tempting for only $500 more than the R8, given the ability to use Sigma’s MC21 to adapt EF lenses. Other than the full frame 4K/60fps and the lightweight form of the R8, the S5II is superior in so many important areas that it is a better and longer term investment.
@helmutleitner5784

When you say that, why not consider to adapt your EF glass to the R8 using one of the 3 availabler Canon RF-EF Adapter options?
@Democratiser
@Democratiser Жыл бұрын
@@helmutleitner5784 You are correct. That is absolutely another option. Had the R8 been released a couple of years back I probably would have bought it then. In the interim however I bought a LUMIX G9. I have a 5d iii and that meets my needs in terms of stills. The next purchase will be video focused. I’m on the fence as to which direction I head: RF, RF-S, L mount or MFT (once PDAF is rolled out to the G and GH lines of LUMIX). I feel the tech is reaching a point of maturity (eg video record times limits have been removed or lifted significantly, 10bit 4K, great AF, etc). So we are offered excellent options regardless of brand. LUMIX has powerful video features which I think would be worth the step up (vs the R8). I also like that the LUMIX f1.8 lenses are not as expensive as canon L series, but offer weather sealing, minimal focus breathing etc.

Hi Josh, what do you think about using an EFM-adapter to the R8 combining the R8 with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4? Will that work well or is it just a bad idea?
@Josh_Sattin
@Josh_Sattin Жыл бұрын
That won't work for several reasons. The adapter converts an EF lens to an EF-M mount camera. The lens is an EF-M mount and the R8 has a RF mount. Also the Sigma 16mm is an APSC lens and the R8 is full frame.

Bro, the R8 is perfect for vlogging because it has no ibis. There’s no ibis wobbles. Digital IS is fine, it’s what Sony uses and what I’m used to already. I bought it specifically for the no ibis, but the light weight is just a huge bonus, it’s super easy to hold with one hand and a little Manfrotto Pixie. My A7iv and 14mm GM were my last wet up, and it was too heavy for the pixie. This new setup is about the weight of the Sony A7iv by itself.

IBIS for me is not a big deal why because there's a lot of lenses that have stabilization built-in. Most photographer/videographer survived without IBIS on DSLR cameras. I have 3 lenses, Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 G2, Tamron 35mm f1.4 and Tamron SP 15-30mm f2.8 G2; only one don't have stabilization. There are also issues using IBIS based on what I've watched. No mechanical shutter maybe I myself have a Tamron 35mm f1.4 lens that may have issue with bokeh using Electronic First Curtain Shutter, I will just use the electronic shutter. SD Card, I will just use a reliable brand with high capacity. Battery, for me this is the biggest issue but maybe a 3rd party battery grip that can hold 2 batteries at a same time will be available in the future.

The newest Sony releases all have the ability to cover the sensor except the FX30 because it doesn't have a mechanical shutter. The R8 does not have a mechanical shutter and I saw a few videos of people complaining about it not covering the sensor when the other canon mirrorless cameras do (that have a mechanical shutter). Go look at product page yourself: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1748813-REG/canon_eos_r8_mirrorless_camera.html/specs

I had the R50 and loved the camera but traded it in with the R6 for the R6 II. R7 was great but do not do wildlife except my dog and cat and local deer. The R50 is tiny not like a point and shoot but I kept pressing the wrong buttons and when vlogging you can press the back. Unfortunately I was new to Canon at the time and didn't know about the lock feature. They probably have a book for the R50 for Dummies. Cheers!

IMHO the battery life and potential lens heavy setup will be the downsides on the R8. That being said, I think this is a more proper 'entry-level hybrid full-frame' R camera compared to RP. I would pick the STM prime lenses for video and even the 24-105 STM for stills for an all-rounder travel cam. In the world of great affordable gimbals, IBIS is becoming less and less relevant for video. I really hope Canon is done with filling up their R system lineup, so hopefully they can release mid-tier lenses 😂

I’m stuck between getting a used R5 but I also like the idea of getting a new camera and I’m stuck between getting the R6 Mk1 and R8. I’m an amateur filmmaker and I want to upgrade from my R50 just so I can get the full frame experience but it’s hard to watch these camera videos because no one really talks about these cameras from a film makers perspective.
@phill5917
@phill5917 6 ай бұрын
I've tried all the cameras you mentioned about buying and here is my opinion... Since your an amateur film maker & want a newer camera then the R6 mk2 is the way to go. Not only does it have a better autofocus system but it has 4 more megapixels than the R6 mk1 AND you get to shoot at 40FPS in electronic shutter. The R5 on the other hand is a good camera but ask your self this... Do you really need the extra megapixels? if you don't do any major cropping or work jobs that require a 45 megapixel photo then spending that extra cash is unnecessary. Just use that money to buy a lens. I can only recommend the R6 mk1 if you want to save more money. You can't go wrong with either camera at the end of the day.

I am a bit puzzled as to why the R8 is presented as a vlogging camera because it is "cheap". For me it seems like a good camera for gimbal work creating beautiful images, as it has the same sensor as the R6II, light weight (good), good AF (good), no IBIS (good for gimbal, better than having an IBIS you cannot control). I never vlog, so my opinion is irrelevant, but I would not choose this kind of camera for walking around handheld pointing the camera at me. I am also puzzled by Canon's strategy of marketing the R8 .... hardly any buzz and promotion, as if they were ashamed of it.

I was hesitant between the R8 and the similarly priced R7. I chose the R7 finally because of the bigger battery, IBIS, dual card slots and overall construction. I have no regret. Sony knows that full frame is kind of magic for many people. And aps c is called a crop sensor, but that is compared to a lens for a full frame camera. If companies would kind of build in metabones like adapations in a lens. You could have aps c lenses on a aps c camera that would produce the same well not the same, even better. Then full frame camera's. You can wonder why they don't. It is all legacy. I hope one day there will be a company that can build a new system that doesn't bother itself with this legacy and just build a camera that can do it all that is available for all. The technology is there.

I have done extensive testing on my channel and I do the extreme of placing the camera on my cars dashboard and start recording different modes. The windshield acts like a magnifying glass so it will heat faster. I would recommend the Rode Lavalier or an external microphone to remove the wind noise. It does have the updated shoe connector for that so you can use the newer shotgun mics for this purpose or whatever device that Canon makes for this. I am going to shoot the Alamo today and try out this camera. I have had this camera for a week and falling in love with it. BTW I do own the R6 II and the R10. Also have Nikon and Sony cameras. All the negative you feel toward this camera is due to the fact that you are not putting yourself into the mind and position of an amateur photographer who this camera is geared for this is for someone who is new to photography and wants a good quality full frame camera you don’t need ibis for video anyone worth two cents in video is using a gimbal so Ibis is really best suited for still photography or if you’re going to stand still without moving and shoot some video and the fact that you can not turn off the ibis on some of cannons cameras are really a hindrance you’re getting the same auto focus you’re getting the same image quality you’re getting 4K 60 at full sensor read out. For a content creator or someone new to photography not a professional I repeat not a professional who needs two card slots !! And a larger battery.

Thank you for the comment. This video is titled and is mainly about how the R8 differs from the R6 II. I stated that the R8 is a fantastic photography camera and will deliver excellent image quality for the price. Most beginner content creators will not have a gimbal. They will pick up this camera and start vlogging with it and will not be happy with the shaky image. I agreed this camera is geared more towards beginners but a lot of my audience are already content creators or videographers. This could easily be a B or C cam for those people. I am doing my best to state facts here to help people make decisions about which gear to buy. Thanks for checking out the video.
