► POST REVIEW NOTE: I get asked all the time which speaker is better? The YU6 or the TUKs. In my opinion, I prefer the YU6 speakers over the Kanto TUK. The best value speaker (in my opinion) from Kanto Audio right now is the YU speaker (bit.ly/YUdesk) which is our current video mixing desk speaker setup.

► Best Budget Loudspeakers for Music Lovers!! - Kanto YU6 Speaker Review
Are you a lover of music? Got a brand new turntable for 2019 and don't know what speakers to get? The YU6 speakers also make great desktop speakers. Since they are powered speakers, you won't need a receiver so this makes your desktop audio setup easy. The YU6 are affordable speakers and great in small and medium rooms. These speakers have been our go-to monitors for editing all of our KZbin videos. Check out my review of the Kanto YU6 powered monitor loudspeakers, they may just be ALL the speaker you need.

Hi, Andrew, because of your review about the LG Nanocell I purchased a 75" one. You are correct very close to LG's Oled tv, very happy with the quality and picture output added a Sonos Arc soundbar to it improved nicely on the sound. I know you are a professional regarding Audio, I trust your opinion and just purchased the Kanto YU6. I wonder if they are completely made in Canada. Thank you for the great review.

Andrew, thank you for the great review. I purchased the YU6 uppon your review, they came in yesterday, I wired them and connected optical 1 to my computer; went to Tidal played some HiFi & Master, strange they are pretty good instrumental. I listen mostly to classic instrumental and Operal. I was not impressed with vocals, i don't know why , Domingo, Pavarotti and other great Tenors just didn't sound correct to me. This morning I tried something different and played Jazz Hat by Mike Carson, HiFi on Tidal, sounded fantastic? Maybe I need to give the YU6 some more play-time. If I may ask Andrew, any toughts on my expierence ?

Thank you for this post. I'm a reovering audiophile of sorts from the early 80's...Luxman, KEF, Rega,' reel to reel, 1/2 speed mastered, direct to disc, anti static sleeves..... Priorities change in 1984 when my wife and I became 3. My little guy found his way to my records and had them out on the floor He was having a diifferent kind of fun with themthan the old man did. My reaction was not good. I had to step back and ask myself "self what is more inportant this life him or your obsession with stuff?". All that to say this. I'm almost 63 now and have found myself back at it but in a much healthier way. My hearing has changed.I find myself with a sound bar system with our TV. My wie and I find ourselves in a small space. She enjoys movies...me music. After this review I found a pair of YU4's on facebook marketplace. An unopened box for $200 CND. Would have been almost $500 taxes in from a store. Also turns out that the seller was a co-worker. I'm quite happy using Spotify through the Bluetooth. I subscribe to Steve Guttenberg Audiophiliac, John Darko and you. To be honest I enjoy this one the most. Thank again Robert

I've had mine for about two years now and finally got around to stand mounting them last week. They are now in the corners of my room and I've finally been able to enjoy them fully. My "listening room" is actually my dining room and the boxy dimensions have prevented me from getting a satisfactory sound. For practical reasons their previous placement on my desk just didn't work sonically. The combination of being too near plus the acoustic nightmare of the room being a nearly perfect cube caused all sorts of issues. Their current position in the corners of the slightly longer wall have made a huge difference. They now have bass. They're less "shouty" and tiring to listen to. I did consider selling them but knew in my heart that no speaker irrespective of cost would have worked in my room. I currently run them with a Rasbi with HiFi Berry digi Plus pro and feed them optically. I run Moode Audio because it allows me to dial-in the necessary EQ to remove some of the artificially enhanced frequencies which the room exhibits. I've also set a "Loudness" profile for listening at lower levels when I just fancy a bit of background music 👍

Like you Andrew I'm a recovering audiophile. I was into the hobby big time in the 80's and 90's. I had about $15k to $20k invested in my system during those years. I kinda lost interest in the hobby but still have all my equipment. I was looking for a set of powered bluetooth speakers for my office and saw your review of these speakers. I did some more research and bought them. I've had them for a week now and I'm frankly stunned by the sound quality. These speakers have pretty much everything except the lowest bass and anyone can add one of Kanto's subs if they want to. Frankly I don't see the need for my purposes. In any event your review was spot on. I really love these speakers. Thanks for letting me know about these gems.

Oh I love them as near field monitors and the fact that they have every input a modern enthusiast would need (short of HDMI) makes them beyond versatile in my opinion. In the past people had all kinds of huge boxed equipment that could be hooked up to an amp or receiver in which it was nice to have a tower of similar sized components. Nowadays with modern input the kind of sources change. Used to have a pair of active Roland monitors which I also found great for the living room for a while. 1 cable to connect the speakers to each other, two power cables, hooked it up to a tv and that was it.

@@skny2282 my comparison is more about integration of speakers into my family life: room, space available for components, overall look and convince of use for me and my wife. 2 weeks after Kanto have arrived our son was born and he dictates a lot. I couldn’t get more sound quality from KEF than I’ve got from Kanto in my environment at that particular moment. But in another environment KEF are way better and enjoyable. KEF was a good point. Kanto was a good point too - selling entire set right now. Both helped me to go further to the setup I really enjoy. Wow, I started watching this video thinking that this is long. But as the review went on, I started getting more and more into the review. I myself am trying to get into the hobby of Hi-Fi music and systems but as you mentioned it can get very overwhelming with all that's out there in terms of the components. Thanks for saying it as I know a lot of purists would like to disagree only because of the fact that they have all these things figured out. Really, really enjoyed your video because you've made it very easy to understand and also because of your voice which made me feel interested to listen. Big up from Dhaka, Bangladesh :)
@RainCity3rd
@RainCity3rd 4 жыл бұрын
Not all purists disagree its more those that want to tinker. The irony with hifi is while everyone says they want the most pure sound what most really want is to tinker with different bits and bobs that change the sound. So really they are looking to tune the sound to what they want to hear. which is great and fun. However what an active speaker can do as touched on in this review is since all parts are already together the sound that is output must be a lot closer to what the designer intended unlike say a passive speaker because they could not possibly control for all the other parts of the system. Studio monitors can be ok but honestly they are a different tool for a slightly different job. They are meant for hearing differences, flaws as a tool to review sound but not necessarily be enjoyable to listen to. I do have friends that use them for living room listening but they said it was more about not having even more audio equipment and also being used to the flat type of sound given off. good luck!

Those do seem very convenient, modern and flexible in use, but in my opinion the best budget solution for beginners is always going to be the used market.

Hi Andrew, loved your review and am considering buying these speakers. However, i often enjoy listening to music 'very loud' (subjective, i know). What db rating do you guess these would reach? Into the 100s possibly? Thanks

Awesome thoughts on these speakers Andrew. I've watched this video 4 or 5 times over the past few weeks trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on them. (They're scheduled to arrive tomorrow ;) ). There are SO many different types of active speakers out there now, its starting to get a bit overwhelming, so this kind of information is really invaluable. I'll be using them on my computer desk which is pretty deep (Around 28") and wide too (they will be set about 4' apart) and am upgrading from my aging M-Audio DX4 so I imagine I'm going to see a pretty decent quality of sound from these. Thanks again Andrew for all of your great content, you're really helping me not fall into the deep end of the audiophile pool :|

@@mikexcopeland Oh HECK yeah I have! I've connected to the Optical directly to my PC (Aorus x570 Pro Wi-Fi motherboard) and don't have any other DAC or amp inline). It took me a little bit to adjust the physical placement, a little move a bit closer to the wall, a little less toe in. I am REALLY REALLY happy with them, they have great sound. There isn't the super deep end in the bass like others have talked about but the low end is very nice amd the overall sound is wonderful! I fired up some Doom Eternal, they handled the sound fantastically. For music I use Qobuz/Roon on my PC and Qobuz on my Note 10+ (connected via BT). I'm pretty new to the higher quality sound arena but I'm very impressed with these speakers and really happy with the purchase. Makes me want to throw on Abby Road again! Thanks again to Andrew for his initial review of these

@@mikexcopeland Oh and a little added thought. One thing that I haven't made the mental adjustment to. Since the speakers have the "auto off" feature (which I DO love), it's taking me a little to remember that if I step away from my PC or walk away with my phone and have no sound coming form the speakers, they will go to sleep. Coming back to no sound can be a little confusing. I'll manage it, it's just a little mental retraining

Excellent review!! I have a question about the YU range. My set up is on a desk facing a wall and I want these speakers for listening to music whilst using the PC. As there is a sub outlet at the back of the speakers, what is the minimum distance I can have them from the wall without getting a muddy boomy sound to the bass? Thanks

Hi Andrew, new to the channel and loving it! Would you still stand by these speakers as the best starter set for the price? Looking to upgrade from a Q acoustics M4 soundbar. For use in the living room for both Tidal Hifi music and movies paired with a Q acoustic 3070s sub. Are there any recent powered alternatives I should consider?? Thanks in advance.

I have a pair of Edifier R1280DB connected to my TV through an Optical (TOSLINK) cable. Honestly, I could go in many routes. But I chose this because: a) These speakers are quite good, average base, but perfectly clear and balanced; b) It was cheap, at ~120€, plus 20€ for a 7.5 meter Optical cable; c) It occupies a small footprint at my living room, to the point you not even notice them; d) Provide me with Bluetooth if I desire to stream music off my phone. I am wondering if I can get more from a home cinema setup, but it is difficult to justify 10x the price, for a little bit of an improvement...

Thank you for your videos! My really old hifi system completely broke and I'd like to start from scratch. Since I like classical, folk and rock, my brother recomended me either Yamaha hs8 studio monitors or the focal alpha 65. But I wondered if studio monitors are too complicated just for listening. I saw this video and I wondered if these Kento 6 would be a good and simpler option for me. What would you suggest?

Vintage gear vs modern? I recently i acquired my father's hifi gear.: a pair of b&w dm220's, a sanyo tp 1030 um turntable with a at3600l cartridge and a sherwood ax 7030 r receiver. The sound is warm and i like it but I'm curious how it compares to a "modern" system like a pair of Kanto yu6 speakers with or without a subwoofer. Any suggestions?

The thing that freaks me out about the Kanto series is the further of the chain you go the less connections you get. On the YU2 if memory serves me correct you actually get a USB in to pair with your computer but on the four and the 6th they completely remove that option. That's what's kept me for buying them. That and the fact that they don't have a way to set which speaker is going to be the active speaker please correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks to Amazon's generous return policy I auditioned 12 sets of book shelves and the Kanto's YUP6's (passive) won. At first I thought these were the only one's where I could get away without a sub, but like all of these little speakers they do NEED a sub. Bought the matching 8" sealed Kanto sub and now it sounds like a full sized stereo. Added bonus: one of the few speakers that is cheaper in Canada than America. p.s. While this little system is VERY good, (best of the little guys) -- it is not nearly as good as Andrew says... but, like Andrew-- that's just my opinion.

I felt the same way. Although, how good of a sound can you hear with bluetooth, as I am listening, they are really pretty good depending upon the audio source. They do need a sub to fill the bass a bit however they are great on some aspects and my first impression wasn't as good as I hear them now. I will let the speakers break in before commenting more. I expected a little more from the price but these definitely aren't terrible.

Do the YU6's sound different from the YU Passive 5.25? I ask because I LOVE my Kanto YU's on my desktop and am thinking of returning my Klipsch RP-600M's for the YU Passives. I just don't like the horn sound of the Klipsch.

Hi First of all, thank you for all the great content you provide, it's really helpful I've been looking into getting myself a turntable. The Kanto Yu6's seems like THE speaker for me, has phono, bt and optical. Im in dire need of keeping things minimalistic and white. Do you still recon these speakers to be any good? The yu6's will serve as turntable sound and tvsound (and i can finally get rid of the soundbar i use atm) Also, how well do you think you can rely on the phono inside of these speakers, it's kind of good to know because getting a turntable with a phono preamp or not. If i like the turntable i will eventually opt for a seperate preamp ofc. Also, do you have any idea on a white turntable? :) Best regards from Sweden

I became a fan of Kanto speakers because I happen to order their YU2 speakers on Drop (at that time it was still Massdrop). I was really surprised with their sound quality at that price point. Sure, the YU2 is smaller than the YU6 and does not have other connectivity like bluetooth but it really sound nice. I connect my phone, laptop and turntable to it. It delivers amazing sound at a very affordable price. I have been using them for quite some time now and I also bought Kanto's down firing subwoofer (also from Massdrop) at that time to give the stereo system a needed boost in the low end. Currently, I am very happy with my Kanto 2.1 system. I would totally recommend Kanto speakers 100% to anyone who are looking for great sound without breaking the bank.

I bought these to go with my Pro-ject Carbon Debut DC. They went from great, until I added the stands and then they went to amazing. Then I added a Sub8 and they went from amazing to Holy F***!! And that was after already using a budget 8" Sony sub. But what really took them to the next level was adding a Schiit Mani phono amp paired with a Vali Headphone amp using the RCA outputs and a old Russian NOS vaccum tube and that took it to a whole other level. Not sure one needs the Vali, but a 3rd party phono amp adds a lot of power and volume and performance to these speakers over the built in one. They also sound amazing through the 3.5mm input if you use a Dragonfly or Subj external DAC connected to your phone or PMP. If you get a chance to listen to them running those other components I'd love to know if you think they make them sound so much better like I do. TBC to anyone reading, I had already invested in that Schiit stack for Vinyl before getting these. And while they make a noticeable improvement, they're not necessary. I was originally shopping for Passive Speakers but my only option at the time was Dell credit and these were the only choice and I made an impulse purchase. Thanks for this review, it killed any potential buyers remorse from buying them so impulsively. This review helped me go for the full setup and they are phenomenal for my spot. Gracias.
