You have utterly convinced me and I have JUST placed an order for this microphone. It seems like everything I could ever want so it sounds too good to be true! I am looking for an upgrade from my current vocal recording setup (which is, erm, my iPhone 🌝) for recording music covers. I want a cheap microphone that has a warm sound in deep low notes, no XLR setups since I don’t have any equipment, complete with a pop shield. I’ll be recording from my quiet basement and won’t be taking it anywhere. Thank you so much for this in depth review!

I'm glad i could help you out with your decision! I used to recommend many different mics over the years, each with their own pros and cons, but ever since this mic dropped a couple of years ago this has become my main recommendation. The insane value proposition in combination with the genuenely good quality just blows everything else at that price point out of the water. The mic isn't perfect tho as you probably noticed from the review. It only going up to 18khz can make it sound a little less sparkly as you'd be used to from condenser mics and it's sub par bass response makes the proximity effect fall a little flat. But nothing that a little EQ couldn't adress. I'm sure it'll be a well worth upgrade over your iPhone mic tho! Much success with your recordings! :D

:0 It literally sounds so great. I thank you a lot that you months ago showed me about the mic. Thank you so much! Edit: Forgot to mention, since I've been using it, I've fallen in love with it, it sounds so good for its price. I've been using it since I got it, and I recommend it myself.

Nice to hear that you didn't regret your purchase! I'm atually surprised this was the first time i've gotten my hands on one long enough so i can film a review for it. And now whenever i recommend people this mic i can just show them this video instead of spending extra time trying to explain my reasoning :D

Thanks for this. I own it for my desktop, even though I have several high end condenser mics and even though it has a smaller capsule it is awesome at any price!

I actually couldn't find the diaphragm size of the 420 usb, but it is clasified as large-diaphragm, so at least 1 inch in diameter. And you're totally right, the value proposition for the price is fantastic!

This is a good review. I won't need to press the mute button on the microphone because my keyboard has one. Overall it's really good sounding.
@toastbrot977 ай бұрын
If your keyboard has the ability to mute your mic system wide then there is indeed no need for a physical button. It's probably even preferable cause as you've heared, the mute click is quite obnoxious :D

@@toastbrot97 Hi, same guy that commented above, just different accounts. Important question ⁉️⁉️⁉️ Did you use any filters/effects/programs when recording this video with the mic? Or was it pure raw, plug it in obs and you're good to go (that kind of thing). Very, very important question that I forgot to ask. Sorry for the trouble.
@toastbrot975 ай бұрын
@@heatnation2069 I used pretty much no effects at all. Usually i do some audio processing for my videos, but for this one i tried to keep everything as default as possible. The only adjustments that i made was adjusting the loudness from time to time and adding a limiter in the sections where i got very close to the mic to prevent any audible clipping. But neither of those things effects the sound quality at all and is only there to keep the volume in check.

@@toastbrot97 Cool thanks. I'm now on thomann and i'm going to buy it. I take the silver version because it's cheaper and i don't think there will be any differences besides the color. Plus i think it will go well with my arturia keyboard wich is white. I'll update you after it comes and i do some test.

@@toastbrot97 Hi, I'm back. This is the 2nd day i have the mic. The mic is super good for its price, the sound is really good, the mic stand is heavy wich gives a lot of stabilization, I use the pop filter, it feels better than the filter you put on the mic. I recommend to use a noise cancelling effect, especialy if the surroundings of you phone are somewhat loud (that depends). The mic gets the sounds from your surroundings pretty easy so your keyboard or mouse might be heard trough the mic but as I said just apply a noise cancelling effect and your good. If you want you can modify the Db of you voice as to be more normal and not be loud. Other effects for bass on your voice are not necessary but if you wish to add you can do so by using an eq software. My answer: The mic is really good for its price, i think it's the best budget mic (for me). I'm glad that toastbrot97 has decided to do a review about it because there are not many detailed reviews about this mic. RESPECT. [Sorry if my english is bad]

Hi! Thank you so much for your review - I found it really helpful, as well as entertaining. I bought this microphone as part of a bundle, including headphones, as well as all the stuff you mention in your video, and I think it's a really good deal. Just one question - is there any way to adjust the gain?
@toastbrot977 ай бұрын
i'm glad you found the review helpful! Unfortunately the mic's gain can not be adjusted as far as i know. All you can do is adjust the gain in your operating system, but as far as i know that is only software gain and doesn't actually effect the pre-amp gain of the mic itself. They used to sell the tbone sc 425, which was identical to the 420 except it had a gain dial for both the mic pre-amp as well as the headphone output. Unfortunately it was discontinued since they now offer the sc 430 which has those same features. Imo it's not as good of a buy for most people tho since it doesn't come with nearly as many high quality accessorires.

Would you recommend this one for gaming and occasional streaming? Background noises is the main concern to be honest.
@toastbrot975 ай бұрын
@@alex__13 If background noise is the main issue then you should probably look into dynamic microphones instead. They are less sensitive and usually better at background noise rejection. Although I don't really have a good recommendation for an affordable dynamic mic. I used to recommend the Samson Q2u but that mic has gone up in price quite a lot. With proper mic technique you can probably make it work with a condenser like this. I use a condenser for content and streaming myself, but you have to be careful with the placement of the mic and the room acoustics.

i barely notice a difference between the two while listening on a soundbar, but that might be youtube's compression
@toastbrot978 ай бұрын
It's not easy to hear the difference, that's for sure. The 420usb is more mid centric and the stc-2 has a little more clarity in the higher frequencies.

@@Capo808-l3e Unfortunately not. Both the blue LED at the capsule and the mute button LED are both turned on as soon as you plug the mic in. There might be a way to internally disconnect the blue LED but i don't have the mic right now, so I can't test it.
