Thank you for producing this test. Honestly, my ear must not be properly trained because I couldn't hear a difference among the mics in each set. However, I think if you revise the test, it will be easier for a winner to jump out in each group. The revision, perhaps less entertaining, ALWAYS repeat the EXACT same phrase twice for each mic before moving to the next, the ear can better discern change in the various qualities of each mic. Do two rounds for each mic group, repeating the same phrase twice for each mic each round, like: 11 22 33 - 11 22 33 ---- 44 55 66 77 - 44 55 66 77 ---- etc. Thanks, again!
@soundsupport2 жыл бұрын
While I absolutely agree with you that these videos are wonderful, there is one real big issue in the tests: Edwards voice ist soo limited in range, meaning there is no low-mid frequency content, so the mics can't show how they behave in this most critical area - all sound the same...

The things I've noticed here: 1. Your voice is suited perfectly for these condenser mics - even the raw recordings sound pretty darn good. That goes for *all* mics here. 2. When processed some of these mics become very, very close. Either it's easy to EQ them for their 'shortcomings' or you're very good at doing so. 3. I'm guessing that if anybody can't get a useable sound out of any of these, it's probably them and not the gear itself ;p
@pedrosilvaproductions2 жыл бұрын
You can make them sound very close. Bigger differences are usually more focused on noise levels and the way they respond to certain frequencies, a mic with pronounced low end for example can sound dull if you take too much of it, sounding way too thin. And others might work well without the same amount of bass. I would say most expensive mics just sound good without much processing if the room and singer are decent enough

I think the AT2020 has a quicker cutoff with the sound, I forget exactly what thats called. It was years ago when I was learning about this stuff. But if you like the quicker close, go for that one. It can help with crisper sounding vocals.

One of my biggest questions though is: does the audio interface you use really matter? With the cheaper mics going into an expensive pre-amp, they sound amazing. I'm just wondering how much of that is due to the interface?
@ZagadochnyPrince Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, you sing great by the way! Wa-47Jr sounds very natural and clear in its price category, other microphones have a predisposition to an overabundance of high frequencies.
@NMages20 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'll die on the hill for the NT1 (not the Nt1-A). I have a natural low/bassy overtone to my voice which already sounds warm and muddy. I had an AKG but it messed with the levels so much, it took forever to get it where I wanted. Maybe for talking normally, but definitely not for singing with a deeper voice. I needed a mic that was basically a flat line so I could edit it myself in my DAW and the NT1 is absolutely the best for that in my opinion.
@AS-mt2we9 ай бұрын

My picks: $100 Mics - AKG P120. $200 Mics - Toss up between Lewitt and AKG. Both sounded great. $300 Mics - The Warm Audio mic takes the crown for me. It offered the best vocals in both raw and EQ'd in my opinion. Out of all of the 300 dollar ones, the Rode NT1-A sounded the worst. Too much high end, making the esses very high pitched and piercing to my ears when EQ'd. I noticed a mid scoop that sounded good for raw vocals, but would probably be a little to sibilant for mixed audio.
@HerveBoisde Жыл бұрын
I thought the Nt1-A sounded very full with some good bottom-end but clear up top. I'm 52 with some probable hearing loss at the higher frequency range due to concerts and playing in bands over the years so that might explain the difference to my ears. The Warm Audio was my second favorite so maybe if i would buy one between the 2 I would trust your ears and go with the WA. lol
@Mallchad Жыл бұрын
@@HerveBoisdeI honestly struggled to tell the difference between the microphones in the same price category and my decent audio interface and headphones is *supposed* to make it easier to tell the difference :P after it was pointed out I can tell the Rode NT-1 has a weaker bass but that's not actually a bad thing. The others feel like they have _artificially loud_ bass, where as the Rode sounds like it has still good bass but better represents the human voice. I strongly suspect this has something to do with the pop filter being completely different though. Mesh vs foam vs metal grill. The LCT 440 Pure also has a similarly low bass and weaker highs to me but without as big a filter My hearing is still perfect but also understand it is a matter of taste vs use case :) the 300 dollar ones sound objectively better in the way they capture more range better, especially the lows. People tend to think low-sounding things sounds good because it's less harsh (and lack of psssssps) and that's what most of the 300 dollar mics do but they just don't sound correct to me, if I was looking for perfect sound reproduce
@DThompson55 Жыл бұрын
What an outstanding voice for this kind of shoot out. P220 has been my go-to for years for vocals and acoustic guitar. I feel my AT2020 has little more air, and a little bit more on the low end, but in the middle where most vocals happen, it's nearly identical to the p220. I'm still considering something from the more expensive group, and leaning toward the Warm Audio, although they all sound great.
@HAMBURGER-s1l Жыл бұрын
1) I pick the AKG P120 sounds better with the echo and less treble. 2) I pick AKG P220 3) NT1-A sounds a little better than the rest which is interesting. Fantastic Video! thank you very much. IMO from sound tests I've heard, Lewitt microphones and Neumann microphones have generally been the best microphones I've heard for singing and music applications, with Neumann being on the higher end price wise but Lewitt having some good options in some lower budget ranges than Neumann Mics. The best bang for your buck mic I've probably heard for things like voice acting applications is probably the Rode NT1, which is also a pretty good mic for general spoken word like podcasts or KZbin videos.

Nah. They sound great to me and not overly sibilant. At any rate it's better to have that high frequency information and not need it, then to need it and not have it -- especially when there are outstanding plugins for managing sibilance on the market now like Soothe2. It's much harder to add high frequency information back (especially if it doesn't exist in the first place) then it is to take it away.

But for the most part they sound VERY similar. I would say for singing i would use the 2020 if i want to sound bright, the nt1a if i want more body in my voice. I would not reccomend the 2020 if you have a heavy lisp or plan on rapping very fast, as the ess'es will starr to become noticable. Just my opinion though !

Hey man, great video! I've been looking for good mics that weren't a fortune, and this video really helped (also you gotta great voice). Just curious, though: say if you were to scream into one of the mics. Would the volume cut off or would it actually record you screaming (specifically the AKG P120 and the AT2020)?

hi thank you for your awesome test! i'm kinda new to all of this. I see the NTA1 you used which sounds amazing to my ears.. the NTA 5 generation is being pushed over that one on the Rhode site and on amazon.. and is cheaper? will the audio quality sound the same? is it just as good?

Hi, thanks for sharing knowledge, the video is excellent. Can you elaborate on your choice of $200 microphones? I understood that you discarded the LCT 240 Pro due to lack of accessories... I didn't think it was fair, its sound seemed superior to the AT 2020 and P120. Accessories are not important in this comparison, you should focus exclusively on microphone quality.

The 240 is also offered with same shock mount and pop filter as the 440. I have both and both came with the same extras.

Hi! I was wondering if you recommend the lewitt lct 440 over the akg c214
