Fantastic video, so full of information, I am a 67 year old retired man in the UK, and love music , guitar, keyboards , drums, I have dabbled in them all, equally as bad on all 3 lol, I have just bought a zoom H2n Microphone, not used it yet, came with Cubase LE which is so full on, wasnt sure if I needed anything else such as audio interface etc ,to be able to record myself on guitar and singing, just for me , watched 2 of your videos and really impressed by your knowledge, thanks so much for posting , from Garry in the Uk

The MXL recording blends really well in the full mix. The AKG recording needs more work on the sibilants and some more balance to blend with the music a little better.
@SanjayC4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with you. You'll see I didn't EQ any of them too much, but with EQ I think all of them can be improved. Thanks!
3 жыл бұрын
@@SanjayC i think the AKG could have used a bit of a sibilance filtering to blend in better. but let me tell you, it sounded the most natural of the whole bunch. the AT sounds way overboosted in the highs (pretty much like the behringer b1), the neat sounds surprisingly flat and lifeless, the mxl sounds HORRIBLE to my ears (it's artificiality kills the deal for me... it feels as if it's boosted both low and high), the samson just sounds boxy and flat. the akg however, my god, what clarity. just listen to the acoustic guitar recordings. the body of the guitar really comes through well, while the resonance of the strings sparkle really nice without sounding artificial at all. i think i will order one now.
@HectorMauricioRaposso3 күн бұрын

The tight/firm bass of the King Bee was beautiful. It was my favorite for the low end; the AKG was lovely for highs. Blending the two could be awesome. I use budget MXL condensers (990 and 2001) myself, so I might have found it boring since I deal with that frequency response on a majority of my vocals and acoustic instruments. I might have to pick up the Neat. Sounds like it could be a good complement to my MXLs. Which, speaking of - I believe the 2001 isn't made anymore, but you can get them used for *well* under $100. You're not going to mistake it for a U87, not on anything resembling a high-fidelity recording anyway; but in a world where you can't swing a mic cable without hitting an SM58, it's a lovely mic, if a bit sibilant at times.

Hi Sara! I started my KZbin channel after 10 years of taking a break from music. I wanted to log my new journey somehow and I thought people may like to watch it. My channel is around 2 years old now and I love making these videos and helping people start their own music journey. I began learning piano when I was 5 years old and was classically trained for 15 years. After that, I took up songwriting. I love songwriting and arranging more than anything else. I don't care for singing, but I do so only because I need vocals on my songs :-D. My goal is to help one person with his/her music goal. Then learn more so I can help another. And then repeat for another. So I think I've met my goal already several times. But it will never end and that's fine with me. I have a regular 9-5 job. I wish I could put all my efforts into my channel. Maybe one day that will be a reality. I have so many songs in my head and little time to record them. One of my dreams is to record cinematic music for films. Another dream is to speak publicly (live) to people about music and KZbin. I've done this a little by talking with high school kids. I love it and could do it forever. Thanks for asking these questions to get to know me. That's a really nice thing to do. So tell me about you. What's your story and what are your goals?

Looking to set up beginner home studio! Watched dozens of your videos, but would love some tailored advice. I'm 25, based in London UK and my budget is roughly £600 ($750) for all the hardware, but can extend to £800 ($1000). I want to make alternative-R&B but also draw from hip hop, pop, house, techno, soul, among others. Have no music training/education so need to learn some music theory and practice singing. ⠀ DAW: Already chose Ableton - bought the full Suite version. ⠀ Midi keyboard: I'm stuck between three options. ∙ Launchkey 49 MK3 - £209 / $260 ∙ Keylab Essential - £175 / $220 ∙ Komplete Kontrol A49 - £159 / $200 Watched your MK review - does Launchkey’s added integration with Ableton outweigh the software instrument bundles on the Keylab and KK A49? Especially with the genres I mentioned? ⠀ Audio interface: Again, stuck between three choices. ∙ M-Audio AIR 192/4 - £100 / $125 ∙ Komplete Audio 2 - £100 / $125 ∙ Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen - £133 / $166 Saw your 7 $100 audio interfaces review - want an interface with a direct monitoring knob/switch. I don’t play any instruments so would the AIR and Komplete 2 (or even 1) be more useful with their instrument plugins? ⠀ Headphones: think I’ll go with Beyerdynamic, but undecided between 770 and 990 - both are £109 / $135. Will be recording vocals eventually, but also want to learn how to mix and master. Therefore, would buying both be useful? Could you recommend a mic amp to power 250 ohm versions? ⠀ Microphone: been overthinking the other gear a lot so this video will help with the mic options. ⠀ I live in an apartment with Mom. Can currently dedicate > 70 hours a week to learning/making music but that might drop to 35 hours per week in coming months. Want to learn things fast but also thoroughly. Would like to have high-quality songs released by end of year. ⠀ Sorry for the essay, I know you’re a busy man. Been watching you for a few months and your videos are top notch. Will be sure to buy some MTMYL merch asap. Any advice you can give is eternally appreciated. Thanks!

Hi amireux, ik im not sanjay but these are just some of my suggestions, earlier in the year i recently got into production and making music, i use ableton and have the scarlett 2i2 and launchkey mini mk3 and its doing wonders for me, I am still saving for ableton live 10 suite and am stuck on lite so i cannot really develop full songs yet but I'm using this time to learn piano and more theory (i am a guitarist) its been the biggest learning curve so far but i think I'm starting to get the hang of it now. tip: avoid all of the stuff you don't need to start out with i.e a drum machine. your budget is quite limited like me so i would reccomend trying to focus on the main things you need. another useful tooll I've been using it splice.com, for only 8-10$ a month you get a thousands of samples and melodys which have really helped me as i cant afford many of the plugins or virtual instruments that are being used. Have fun and MTMYL, hope this helped
@SanjayC4 жыл бұрын
For Ableton, I like the Launchkey if you're going to use Session View in Ableton. Interface, my vote is tied between Komple Audio and Scarlett. Get the Beyer 770. Better versatility. On learning music, I've found that it takes time. you can learn all you want quickly, but time gives your ear a lot of experience. I don't think you can rush your ear. But...by learning quickly, you'll certainly be ahead of the rest. Do it...and best of luck!

Ended up getting the AT2020 this week (Needed it for a voice-over ASAP, and they didn't have any AKG in stock) After this test, I do actually like the sound of the AKG a Tad more due to the better low end, but I thought it would be drastic, with a bit of EQ, it seems like I could get quite close. I was afraid there would be a large difference, But I think I do like how much quieter the AT2020 is too. Thanks for making this video, I don't regret my choice! I also noticed the AT2020 had a lot less sibilance, that made it sounds smoother for the spoken word, but it did take some detail away from the guitar that the AKG kept.

@@SanjayC Pretty good, actually. It's small, compact and comes with a stand which allows me to use it anywhere. I'm most likely getting the Samson Mic if I do need one connected to my interface. Something that came to mind...check out Brusfri by Klevgrand. It's an AMAZING app and has saved me a lot of work in cleaning audio. Just like Gulfuss is your secret weapon, Brusfri is mine and it's on Mac OS and iOS as well.

The P120 was the clear star for me. I use the SM58 in my DJ rig, and it fills in fine for live singing when needed. A splash of effects from my A&H PX5 helps. My “studio” mic is the budget series PGA27 from Shure. Guitars sound great with it, but it hasn’t helped me dial in vocals yet. Obviously, many factors are involved; especially when my “live” performance voice through even the simplest PA sounds better to me and others than my “studio” voice. (Frustrated in Florida)
@SanjayC4 жыл бұрын
Hey Greg. The P120 was so surprisingly good to me. Honestly if you're going to get another mic, you should get the P220. It will probably be different enough from the rest of your collection.
@GregSB14 жыл бұрын
Sanjay C Thanks Sanjay, I have several other Shure PGAs that shine for other functions, too. I suppose it’s time to invest in something else since I feel that I’ve exhausted presets and channel strip options. It may just be me. I haven’t captured the same vibe in a recording that I have singing live.

Exceptionally well-done comparison! I liked the way you laid it all out featuring one mic immediately after the other and demoing singing, spoken word and acoustic guitar. The AKG P120 would be my first choice. Although the Samson C01 was thinner sounding it did have as much clarity as any of the others. I like that it didn't lean towards the lows and mid-lows the other microphones did and it sounded really natural to me. Simply adding a touch of low EQ to the C01would make it sound about as good as the others, considering it was the least expensive of all.

I chose the AT2020 some years ago (mainly because it was BLACK, and the opponents where the Samson C01, the Røde NT1a, and other silvery ones), as my entry studio mic, and still happy with it to be honest. Next mic?.. Maybe a bigger brother in the AT family? But for the moment, more than enough really. ;)
