Thanks for this video ! I was planning on getting a AT2020 for a long time now, but seeing so much singers and producer using the NT1a made me hesitating to pick both at the same time. Your video made me prefer the AT2020, much cleaner and with less low (I have a deep voice so no need for too much low mid) and less "room". The NT1a is definitely more sensitive and with more definition, but its not what I'm looking for, so thank you for clarifying my choice x) ! Great Video !

Both of these mics are superb budget mics and bat way above their price range. I do think that generally the NT1a edges it out slightly with its warmth because of the more forward low end to the sound. I kind of like that the AT2020 doesn't have that much of a bass file as I think it'd be easier to EQ, starting from more of a blank canvas. It has less "color" to its sound. But if one didn't have the extra $130 for the NT1a, with minimal EQ-ing I think you can get the AT2020 to sound very close or identical to it. I bought the AT2020 but not too long ago gave it to my teenage godson (19) who has a really small home studio setup and wanted to upgrade from recording with dynamics to a condenser. Before even knowing that I owned one, he mentioned that he was thinking about getting the AT2020. I pulled mine out and said "Merry Christmas, bud." He was beyond thrilled, to say the least. And just the other day he told me he tried it and loves it :) All in all, for me, the NT1a has a slightly better sound but anyone, especially if you're now starting out, would fare just as well with the AT2020 :)

When it comes to vocals, I kinda think that the AT2020 sounds a little compressed while the NT1a sounds more open and airy. But when it comes to guitar, the NT1a seems to be a little more sensitive and able to pick up the warm sound when hitting the bass strings, while AT2020 sounds a little more clear with less "warmness". Both are great mics. Both sounds really good. I don't actually prefer one over another between these 2, but as someone who has just started to make song covers on KZbin, I really can't decide whether should I spend an extra $130 just to get some subtle differences.

Just scooped a NT1-A because it was on sale for 199$ CDN and I already owned a AT2020. I also own the AT2050 and honestly all these mics sound very much the same with no processing on them. (AT2050 being a smidge better control wise with switches on the microphone.) A microphone is only as good as the tools it's connecting to. If you don't have studio equipment or software/DAW plugins to match the microphone. You're never going to get that sound for live feedback. A lot of quality comes down to sound processing and not so much the microphone itself.

Hello, great comparison, I like the "deeper fullness" of the AT, but also the "clarity" of the NT1A.. wish they'd have a baby ;) As for the Audio Interface: 2014, I bought the sE Electronics USB2200a, a USB/XLR-hybrid condenser microphone that harmonizes very well with my voice - it was hard for me to find a mic that sounds good for my voice. However, it's only "Plug & Play" on Windows 7 and below, not on Windows 10 anymore.. no driver support, hence I've got to buy an audio interface. - Any recommendations which audio interface sound well with female voices? Majorly voiceover, but also sometimes singing. Thank you very much in advance! Meri
@AudioHaze2 жыл бұрын
Hey Meri! In my experience audio interfaces all tend to be pretty transparent, so they don't have to much of a tonal characteristic on the input except if you were to put an emulation on it (like the UA interfaces do). So, for me I always value interfaces with plenty of clean gain. For voiceover, Audient has been a go to for many of my colleagues. Give those a try, Mike from Booth Junkies swears by them!
@DWHarper622 жыл бұрын
They are both bright but the AT2020 high freq. are harsher than the NT1A, with some sibilance definitely coming through on the AT mic... Can you not move the mic stand along with the mic to get proper placement of the AT mic? Doesn't make sense... I called the correct mic on the test... Listening through Audient ID14 interface with Kali LP-6 monitors (room corrected)... And get the Rode NT1 if you are looking... warmer and better all around than the NT1A...

This is comparing apples to oranges, mate - the AT2020 isn’t even a large diaphragm mic - it really is meant for instruments or low-end applications but is sooo good at punching above its weight that some people use it for singing/vocals. To do this right, you’d need to compare the Rode NT1/NT1a with at least an Audiotechnica AT4033a, AT4040 or higher… also you *must* note that Rode’s self noise is measured in dB-A whereas Audiotechnica measures self noise in dB-SPL - you would need to subtract around 6 or 7 from the AT2020/2035/4033/4040’s number to compare it to any Rode NTxx numbers. Rodes are expensive because anything made in Australia is more expensive …even instant coffee 😂 although I do think all Rode equipment is pretty well made by us Aussies. That’s why we’re confident about a 10-yr warranty, for sure.

for sure return it mixing with the at2020 is easier than the nt1a way less deductive eqing in the mids/lows

Spl level doesn't mean that much as see it, my old mic which is Akg c3000 can supposedly take up to 150 db, but actually it reacts pretty badly to my loud singing (which doesn't come close to 150 db) and gets distorted. when at the same time the Neumann u87 spl limit is 127, but I'm sure it can take loud singing better than my c3000, although I haven't tried it yet. having a high spl limit doesn't nessecearily mean it will handle as much loudness as you would think, so it seems. it doesn't need to go, for example all the way to 144db(or close) to have unwanted distortion. also, my old Samson co1 has a spl of 136, so what, it means that it should react better to loudness than a U87? it's a terrible mic for any singing that isn't quite. it distortes too, too easily.

Hello, can you recommend best studio microphone for a musician? Thank you
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
Its hard without knowing your voice and also your budget! It also depends on if you want a dynamic or a condenser. For lower end mics, try the AT2020, NT1a, and the Lewitt 240 Pro. For higher end mics try something like an Aston Spirit or the Neumann TLM 103. If you're looking at dynamics, I recommend the SM57 or affordable mics and the RE20 if you'd like to spend a little more. I really can't narrow it down without testing on your voice, but I love all the mics I just recommended :)

Hey, I'm actually very unsure about which mic I should get. I really want to get one to start recording but idk. Confused between rode and audiotechnica. I don't have a sound proof room, I have used rode nt1A in the past but I never felt like I could sing freely, even though I used that in the studio. I became very conscious and started to control my voice a lot. I couldn't try belting out or anything. My mom keeps telling me to get a good one no matter how expensive it is, but I want to be able to belt and sing freely...so is Audiotechnica the same in that matter?
@AudioHaze2 жыл бұрын
If you want to belt in an untreated room, I think you need a dynamic microphone. A SM58 is a great cheap option, but if you're looking to spend some more money, I would check out the RE320 or the SM7b :) the dynamic mic won't pick up us much room reflections, and will be less sensitive to dynamic change, so you can go from regular singing to belted with less of a chance of clipping. I have a whole vid on Dynamics vs Condensers if you want to check it out! I also find I don't feel the need to control my voice as you mentioned on a dynamic

I make regular rap music that doesn’t have that much auto tune, on chicago drill beats and sometimes songs to play like carts type beats. So sometimes i need to rap really loud, and other times i need the mic to be sensitive enough to hear fast words. which would you recommend?
@AudioHaze3 жыл бұрын
Well, I think these will both have similar responses to dynamics, its more a matter of tone. I think the AT2020 is a much more solid, thick tone which may make your voice naturally more beefy and solid, while the NT1a provides more high end response which will make your voice brighter. If you want something that hands extreme dynamics better, a dynamic mic may be the way to go though.
