I once did 400 calf raises without stopping... I got to 40, and it started to "burn" though to me, it was easy to overcome as I did more... After 400, I could barely walk right for a few days... I was walking with my heels up, tippy toe, otherwise it hurt... Though, I went from basically no calf definition to a lot afterwards... It was a good experiment, though I do not recommend doing unless it's a one time thing...

You can do the standing deficit calf raise on a smith too. I prefer it because I can load a lot more weight without fear of dying when hitting failure 😂
