Best Campground Near Yosemite National Park

Good tips. Our campgrounds are packed on the weekends so i like to book my sites during the middle of the week, less people to deal with and i can get the spots i want most of the time. Another tip i can give ya is camp off season, it can be cheaper and besides who likes to camp when its cold out? Love your videos Jen keep them coming.

Thanks so much, Ken. 100% agree with off season. It can get tricky in the Sierras due to road closures when it snows. One of my favorite trips to Yosemite was at Thanksgiving in the valley. We did stay in the tent cabins that trip. There was snow/rain and full waterfalls.

Why didn't you upload this 8 years ago? That's when I went, haha... but I ended up driving for the day from Sunnyvale, started at 5 AM, got there at 9, then drove back at 8 and arrived at midnight, SUPER tired, but it was beautiful!

The small town of El Portal is where park employees (concessionaires, Conservancy employees, and NPS rangers) live, so much of the land there is owned/leased by NPS and therefore, just like inside the park, no overnight camping is allowed. Just thought I'd add a few others that I am familiar with as well on the Western side of Yosemite. There is boondocking a little further north in the Stanislaus National Forest on Hardin Flat Rd and Evergreen Rd (off Hwy 20). A little further Southwest, there are also three small primitive BLM campgrounds (Railroad Flat, McCabe Flat & Willow Place Campgrounds) on the Merced River off Hwy 140 for vehicles under 18" that run $10/night and are first-come, first-serve. These are about 45 minutes or from the Arch Rock entrance.

I hope to add some camping sites on land soon off 140. Not worried about making a bunch of money just want it to help maintain the land and offer a quite place to escape while keeping as much of the natural beauty of the property left whole. Enjoyed the video.

That would be awesome. The park closed Tuolumne to do work this year, so i'm guessing it's going to be a tough camp site finding year.

Thanks Geoff. We didn't get much riding in on our second trip last summer due to the fires. We had planned to ride in Mammoth on our way home but instead had to just escape south.

Super helpful to us nowhere near non-locals. We are thinking Yosemite within the next year or two, and we have always been scared of finding stuff.Is there a less busy season, or is it always kind of busy? We try to avoid summer for that reason

Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. We’ve had good luck at the fcfs sites but we went mid-week and arrived before 9. Off season is my favorite time, but we can’t always get there.

Thabk you for your tips! In your opinion, in late June there Is the chance tò take a spot in a FCFS campground like Tioga Lake campground? Cause we'll come in June and in the northern part of the park all the campsites are still closed until july or for all the year. I m very sad because I dream stay in White Wolf campground from many years 😭

There is going to be so much snow and water this year! You should be able to find a first come site, I would get to the campground in the am before people are leaving

I just don’t get it. If you’re going to go through all that effort to creat a campground and clear out areas where campers can camp, would it be too much to go that extra mile and create sites that are at least level? I mean really.

Lol, agreed. I saw one campsite at a Michigan state park that was at a 45 degree angle. They should have just left it forested. However, I do prefer to stay in campgrounds where they have left most of the area's natural contours. I have stayed in some campgrounds that are very level, because they scraped off all the topsoil and trees and basically built a parking lot. I'd rather have some lumps.
