Leave it to Richard to brand "card of the year" a card that's basically a slightly better Guild Commons.
@alexkulis729521 сағат бұрын
I do agree with him that the card is very good, but it definitely is not an auto-include in every deck like he plays it. In particular, I like them in decks where you can play lands from graveyards. Being able to use channel lands or cycle lands, play them from the yard and then bounce them back to hand is incredibly powerful and grindy. He just windmill slams these into everything though, which I do agree with Tomer is just a tempo loss.
@jmwheelz1219 сағат бұрын
Tomer’s “two for one” approach is absolutely key to seeing the value in these Swat effects. In commander it’s so pivotal to get the most out of your card slots and having a protection plus a removal spell (albeit conditional) is graaaavy.
@totakekeslider383515 сағат бұрын
Agreed, I love Swat. Think I’ve won more games from it than any other red card.

So happy for my favorite commander Kambal, Proditeering Mayor to finally get the recognition it deserves! It got no hype during spoiler season but Kambal is a low key powerhouse that makes a lot of "bad" cards absolutely cracked (e.g., Tombstone Stairwell)

@MenaceLendil15 сағат бұрын
People always talk about red redirect effects as only usefull vs targeted removal but they are actually much more flexible than that, you just kinda have to be tricky. For instance i once changed the target of an opponents reanimate spell to a some random shit that wasn't relevant. Also lets you engage in counterspell wars. Lots of things have targets.

Over and above the desert bounce land (it's cool and I do want a bounce land or two in most decks), I've been running a lot more of the Conduit Pylon type lands this year. ETB untapped surveil or Scry 1, tap for colorless or filter for a color. Running 2-3 of those in a mana base to smooth out draws and deck flow.

I have so far had great to insane success with Three Tree City in following commander decks: - Ovika, Enigma Goliath - just goated Battle Hymn on a stick on a demand that just sticks on board after any wipe, S+++ Class. - Niko, Light of Hope - waaaay clunkier but if I am able to hold off playing it and naming any creature type that's Angels, which are the main wincons, it's amazing. I also have flicker spells so I can reset it if I want so it gets nuttier then but that wasn't needed much. - Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds - This is a Hare Apparent deck, which plays a little too close to Ovika, Enigma Goliath so the Three Tree City is as insane here as it is there, but I am planning to either make this one have a combat based wincon or just be a Ghired.dec not a GhiredAndBunnies.dec and move the bunnies elsewhere. Three Tree City is just utter insanity in a decks it was made for.

@Suppaichu17 сағат бұрын
I think richard is crazy in a lot of topics, but i think he's right about bounce lands. Apart from the case in which people want to sabotage themselves because you get even more screwed by wastelanding a bounceland, it's just very good at the cost of tempo, and in casual edh tempo just almost doens't matter. Even in the worst case with discarding to hand size, wouldn't you loot for a land on turn 2 if you didn't have a land drop for next turn? It's like milling with a surveil land to try and draw a land next turn, except it's guaranteed to be a land. The upside is consistence on land drop, all the other synergies are a plus is how richard thinks, and i think that in casual multiplayer that's mostly correct

Seriously don’t want to hear them talking about house banning anymore cards 3:08 until we stop seeing almost ever week being decided by who has the Teferi’s Protection. It was one of the first cards many play groups got rid of once they saw how swingy it was. Yet they keep playing with it and it keeps deciding games. Seriously, if your gonna keep T-pro, stop with the house bans, cause nothing is swinging more games and deciding more games than that ridiculous card.
@tanvirrahman733920 сағат бұрын
House bans are all fine and good but I think it's their deck building philosophy that needs a change. Seeing the same 50 cards from game to game is the issue for me. It's a rant/wall-of-text below. It's great you have a "The One Ring" or "Teferi's Protection" or some other powerful card. I understand you want to play it in a deck b/c a) you have one and b) it's really good. When these "staples" are in every deck you can shove them in and when you include a lands package, the first 50-ish cards of a new deck is done. Now you just need to fill the rest with cards that fit the theme of the week. This is efficient when you have to build new decks regularly on top of the other content they make. I get the convenience. It's annoying nonetheless. First - not all viewers have access to similar powerful cards or even some less expensive "staples". This feels alienating to some viewers. Second - powerful cards often times elevate a weak strategy/theme or straight up makes it "viable". Adding lots of fast mana, "free" spells, and other powerful cards to make a "chairs" theme or "only looking left" theme viable feels disingenuous (I don't know if these themes have been done). This sends the message "any theme is viable with powerful cards". Third - the card pool is huge. There are lots of ways to draw cards, ramp, create tokens, end games, interact, etc. Explore other options. I look for content that explores MTG in ways I don't, whether it's b/c of time, access, or creativity (I understand it's a time consuming task and I don't know how alleviate it for content creators).

not so fun fact: we got this year to over 2k new cards. together with last year its little over 4k. thats close the same amount we got in 6 years with 2007 to 2012. so basically we are close to tripple the amount of new cards... thats alot. if you ever wonder why it feels like its too much, here you have some numbers to throw at people. also cards have more words and alternative art.
