I played a game recently where the Athreos deck combo'd out 32 Shadowborn Apostles by tapping out. Ramping them for 19 with Winds of Abandon didn't matter at all, their deck did literally nothing after that... it ensured my Land Tax, Claim Jumper and Knight of the White Orchid for quite a few turns after that, too

I could definitely argue that all co lors need some kind of card draw to enable the player to play the game, but I could also argue that if a color seems to need something else it’s because it’s not doing its own thing Good enough. And to say blue is a flying color seems weird to me because white and black and red do it better with demons angels dragons, spirits,

Like I long the bit doing get me wrong, but if you did "shill out" to WOTC that would just be like... A phenomenal sponsor? Like isn't that the GOAL? For the company for whom you have done millions of hours of labor giving their players data and info about their game to recognize you for the work that you do and pay you to do more of it? Like no one is getting mad at LRR for being paid to make the original Friday Nights, or the sponsorship they receive for the PPR's why would anyone be upset with y'all for getting paid?

Here is how they can get rid of the reserved list without the whiny people complaining about their cardboard investments. They offer a 1 time trade-in for the originals where players can trade their OG reserved list pieces for a special secret lair type art that will only be available that 1 time and only from the trade. Then they say that the secret lair version is the reserved version and they could be free to print the regular version or another art version. It would actually raise the value of the reserve list cards because there will be people that don't trade theirs, so their OG piece will raise in value as there will be less of them around. Then, since those people will keep theirs, the secret lair version will be even more valuable because there will be less of them in circulation. All of this will leave WOTC free to reprint $40 tundras and such. Also, they don't even have to do the whole list since there are only like 30 cards worth any real value on it. I don't see a word where anyone freaks out about $2 reserved list cards not being protected anymore.

Living in FL, curling is really bad due to humidity. I bought a humidor - A fancy box that's humidity sealed for Cigars to keep humidity in. But! If you then add the dehydrator packets, then it's a dehumidor, and excellent for storing your mtg cards. Also doubles as a display case as they're often pretty and smell nice like cedar.

The childs card game trope is overplayed. Yes the boxes say 14 and up right, n some people teach kids at an even younger age like 11-12... BUT let's be honest here magic is primarily a game for 17 and up. I've been playing mtg since 2007 n it's very rare to see players under 17-18 bcuz magic is a super expensive hobby. 95% of all players are over 18 with roughly 50% of players or more over 30. That's why you automatically knew whoever threw the chair was a grown man. LGS's are just generally populated by men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. There is usually also a group of players in their 20s too but it's rare to see teenage kids playing magic.

Taking Seth's idea to another level. Put foil-gold bordered Power 9 in collector boosters and then do the 1-of-1 One Ring treatment. Print a tournament legal 1-of-1 copy of each the Power 9 and shuffle them into packs. Those extra single copies won't have any negative effect on the resale value of the Power 9.

I'm 11mins and I just want to say so badly that: in a landfall deck, path to exile triggers half of my board if used on myown creature. I'm ramping faster than my opponents most likely, giving them a land to exile a very problematic creature is so worth it. I feel like path is good in green decks, swords is good in lifegain decks, and dispatch in artifact decks. That's when you play these cards. If you are in jeskai, using path is silly, you are already behind on ramp naturally compared to any deck in green. But, there's a good chance you have a lot of artifacts in jeskai so you might run dispatch instead.

Seth really believes that the precons are the definition of casual? I will tell you that in case you missed it. Every single precon has 3-5 chase cards that are "the best/much batter on what they do" for X strategy. There is nothing casual on that. Its the definition of p2w.

33:24 limited players were annoyed because the cost of packs went up with play boosters. The common thing was because the colour balances changed and there were more possible rare slots so reading signals from other drafters became much harder. Also, sealed is now just crazy with like 10-12 rares per card pool.

Make one fancy version of each rare/mythic and make it RARE. Like properly rare. Make uncommon and common foils but make them RARE. Like one foil per pack. Make opening a rare version or foil actually exciting. Make collector packs just have a guaranteed common/uncommon foil and a slightly higher chance to open other foils + special printings fix the obvious issue that would have. Plus the serial versions. 29:43

I’d have a carrot approach to appease Hasbro to ensure they get enough revenue to hire back the staff they fired, in this particular way: launching more appealing secret lairs with cool REPRINTS, then offer secret lair cards when sold with NERF, Transformers and other IPs to drive sales for their sagging toy market (in the worst case just for scalpers to buy up toys in order to get the cards) with artworks that relate to the toys like artifact creatures with Transformers and horses & pegasi for My Little Pony etc. With the rehired people I would put more focus into standard with great returns to planes and have more secret lair cards to be EXCLUSIVE to local game stores to help them out too. I would print cards in canceled languages like Portuguese again, with special “masters” sets sent to countries speaking those languages to sell so the world is caught up in the languages they speak. Lastly, I would spend more on organized play to have multiple formats and locations hosting events over the year to make the appeal more mainstream with great prize support from LGS all the way up to Worlds. Is that too much to ask?!

@6:05 is a shame Crim feels that way. I found XVI to be far superior to XV. XV is the only FF game I have ever played that I didn't enjoy. T other point where it is the only one I have played that I never finished it. Meanwhile, FF XVI, while very different to what I once loved FF for, felt like a new lease of life for FF. Meeting the game on its own terms and having those Kaiju-style battles just made the experience so fun. As an aside, I really do hope they have some FF XVI stuff in the FF Universes beyond cards. FF UB might be the first UB set I actually buy cards for. Give me some Tidus & Yuna, or Fran & Balthier, or Chocobo, give me XVI's version of Cid! Could make some epic cards out of that kind of stuff. Heck the "Transform" mechanics that some cards have (dual-sided) could absolutely be applied to FFXVI-based cards to be akin to their "summon" effects.

You know they're going to keep going until a single sheet is one single card. You wonder why Magic is getting more expensive? Cardboard isn't inherently expensive, but it can be if they need to print 350 entire sheets each dedicated to one card. Also, I don't think there is anything wrong with each format set being printed for just that format - full stop. If a card turns out to be busted in Legacy or Commander or whatever off-format, just deal with that in a card to card basis. If a Standard card isn't good in Modern or Commander, oh well, play Standard. Cards don't need to simultaneously be good in formats that each have different parameters. The problem with any good-for-game decision is that they're not simultaneously good-for-business ones. Sure, it would be nice if they printed less Commander Decks, but focused on BETTER commander decks, but people are basically willing to spend 40-50 for 10 new + 90 reprint cards each deck. But, I would suggest a design choice for Equipment. Instead of a mana cost to equip, equipment has either a "Sheathed" or "Unsheathed" keyword. Sheathed means it enters untapped; needs to tap to be equipped; then, it needs to be untapped for its text box to be active. Unsheathed (a hammer for instance, or shield, or whatever - could be functional or flavorful) means it WTBs tapped, and still needs to tap to be equipped, and untapped to be active. This sounds complicated, but simply, equipment doesn't require mana to equip, just tapping it equips. Some ETB tapped, and some ETB untapped. Some ETB already equipped, and all can be equipped by another source using Magic. Some creatures will ETB with a Deft counter, allowing them to remove a Deft counter to untap a weapon equipped to them. It may seem like a minigame around equipment, but I think it'll add a layer of depth, allowing all equipment to suddenly become more useful. Imagine that Maul that allows you to fly, +2/+2, vigilance, whatever, but it costs 5 to equip? Yuck! Now, it ETBs tapped, you need to tap to equip it, and it needs to be untapped to benefit from it. 3 turns? Not with a Deft counter or a Kor Equipper (forgot his name) or that Myr Squire (or others that surface with this change). Things that tap or untap artifacts now matter more and things that care about artifacts being tapped matter more. Hammer time would still take 3 turns to send the hammer, but 1 or .5 turns with the right abilities - much like how it currently is. I think there's potential creative space here.

Couldn’t possibly care less about 60-card MtG. I don’t wish the other formats ill, and just wish 60-card players would reciprocate that. This era of “We played EDH with awful cards” era old-timers talk about just seems weird to me. I never would have returned to MtG if Commander had remained that. I can understand yearning for times past, but the arrow of time doesn’t fly backwards, no matter how much we might wish otherwise.

If I were CEO I would take 3 steps to fix the game, or at least try to move it in a more Sustainable and Healthy Direction. 1. Products. We have way too many sets and way to many new cards printed. I would go back to the 3 set block structure. One Large, two small. The Block Starts in January, Set 2 will be April, Set 3 in July. Staying in an Entire Plane for a few months lets us actually Explore the setting and storyline instead of rushing through every single plotline like a train. Yeah that will make the plot take forever, but if it is good enough people don't mind that. Now this leaves the Fall/Winter seasons bereft of "Product" and there is a solution to that, the fall seasons are when you do the Commander Product (down to Once a year instead of once a set) The challengers decks, and the Premium sets including Universes Beyond. Premium sets can be the Modern Horizons, ___ Masters, Battlebond, Conspiracy, and Universes Beyond are the Bonus Sheet of these sets. They are all Godzilla Style with the Universes Within version being in one of the Standard sets of the coming year, having to go through Standard means that their power will be held in check, and being Bonus Sheet Cards means that you don't do Universes Beyond with 4 Versions of a Character. (this was a Huge Problem With Kellen too for the record, He has had 5 in One year, and they don't have a Cohesive Theme) For Commander Decks, a Cycle of 5 every year, themed around the mechanics from the next year, put copies of the Universes Beyond cards in where they fit, and put in the Big Planeswalkers from the next year. Use Commander decks not just as a big product to get people into the format, use it to preview the next year. 2. Lore I don't mean to specifically call out Crim, but he is outright wrong about "Magic the Gathering Needs a Netflix Series" I know people who really like Arcane, like "Bought the Steel Book on day one of release" and "Won't Shut up about it" and "It was the best thing in that year" level of fans. Not a single one touched League of Legends because of it. Before a Netflix show is even thought about anymore they need to get the Lore up to a passable grade. No more resolving long standing plots off screen (Teysa Karlov taking over the Orzhov Guild from Tomik) no more forgetting about Major items outright (Someone reminded me the other day that the MIRARI still existed and was last in the Hands of Glissa) No more Overhyping the current badguy to the point of absurdity(No..New Phyrexia is not a threat to the Multiverse, Old Phyrexia had issues with a Singular Plane until Yawgmoth showed up) which will solve the issue of the "Solutions" being equally absurd. (There is no reason for the Glistening Oil to get bound to Elesh Norn, Yawgmoth could suffuse himself into everything on Old Phyrexia and the Oil Worked after he died.) Stop rubberbanding on who the focus is, Complete this Omenpath arc..Close the Omenpaths..and Refocus on the Gatewatch. Planeswalkers are your main characters people need to get over it. The Gatewatch plot didn't fail because of the Gatewatch, it failed because most of it was badly written and Nicol Bolas' invasion of Ravnica made no sense. 3. High End play. I would build a proper Pro League, I would build a proper play area for the top 16 Players in the world, and the Pro Play would be at least a Monthly Event, a Swiss League where the top players contend against each other for Bi-rounds in Worlds. Each Major Format would be played at least once per set release so that the Pro Tour showcases ALL of the formats, not just one or two of them. Magic Cons/Grand Prix would be the Amateur path to worlds, I would hold alot of them across the planet, and the Winner would get a spot in the World Championships.

I'm a subscriber to the "Audience doesn't know what they want. They only know what has come before." mentality. Fuck giving people what they want, they don't know what they want. When designing something, anything, the audience's opinion always comes last. You never give them what they say they want; because again, people don't actually know what they want, they only know what has come before. Designing for anything other than standard and limited is a mistake. kzbin.infoBTQnb6qvAJM?si=Gr9LomniTB8o_hWi

The problem with Mindcrank is play pattern. I don't mind the card, but I'm very clear that as soon as you play it, I'm killing you, because it's half a combo piece and no one runs it without trying to combo kill with it. Most of the table usually agrees. So it leads to a very binary playstyle of "either win the turn Mindcrank is played, or die for the sin of casting half a combo piece" I'm a little surprised the gang didn't note this, they frequently talk about how bad it is to run out half of an infamous combo, because it instantly draws everyone's ire and just makes things less fun. The person playing Mindcrank better be OK with sitting around for 40 minutes while the rest of us finish... Also, a lot of the winning combos with Mindcrank take a lot of time to resolve in paper Magic. Getting non-deterministically comboed for 2-3 damage 20 times in a row can take 15-20 minutes, and you don't really have any input for most of that.
