So she’s very wrong about the sphinx cat not needing grooming. I don’t know who needs to hear this but if you’re a first time cat owner and you’re looking for a sphinx cat, understand that you’re gonna have to give it a bath every 2 to 3 weeks maybe once a week. Sphinx cats don’t have long hair so they get really oily ergo you have to bathe them.

@@schewpid8706 Soft plastic claw caps worked really well for mine! They have to be changed every 6 weeks, and occasionally one falls off and needs replacing. It’s a process to get them used to it, but it saves a lot of time in the long run. They are not cheap, but they do last a long time. You just have to use enough glue. and put the claw in quickly so it doesn’t partially dry. That’s usually why they fall off, when they do. It’s also important to get the correct size, but they are only 3 sizes and my first guess has always been right. When I tried using the other cats’ caps when I ran out, it didn’t work.

A young mixed breed cat of mine loved to walk on a leash. I trained her by walking the same route with her in a carrier every day (now you can get a kitty Snugli, where you wear them in front, like a reverse backpack). Once she knew my route and was comfortable, she wanted to get down and walk on a leash herself! Pretty soon, she was insisting she didn’t need the leash but better safe than sorry! If they see a prey animal or are scared by a dog or loud noise, they could run off and get lost. I would definitely get an adolescent or cat two years old or younger if leash walks are important to you. I forgot that part!

The best breed of cat in my opinion is... A shelter cat lol Cats are literally everywhere and anywhere, and there are so many who die every year in shelters simply cause no one adopted them. Shelter cats cost less to take home, and you'll be saving an animal that could've potentially been put down. Not shaming anyone who buys a kitten from a responsible breeder, but in my opinion it is always better to adopt instead of shop. Got my babies from the local shelter ❤️ Also some more exotic breeds can be more high maintenance then cats that are "mutts."
@melodymay48882 жыл бұрын
this is totally true but that isn’t a breed and you can find these breeds in the shelter even if they are mixed with another cat. it’s important to know what kind of cat your getting from a shelter because a shorthair is going to be very different than a maine coon
@sciencenotstigma95342 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have fostered cats and kittens with shelters, and it broke my heart recently to see a very sweet senior put down. I couldn’t take her because I have a cat on a different special diet than hers was, and I simply couldn’t afford two prescription foods on a daily basis. Most shelter cats don’t have special needs, and you can often benefit from having the health and disposition report from the previous owner. I have rescued and/or fostered over 150, and they were all beautiful! I prefer to adopt seniors, as I’m chronically ill and they love to cuddle in bed. When I’m laid up, I couldn’t ask for anything better!
@akariovo75052 жыл бұрын
@@melodymay4888 yes I know it isn't a breed, it was meant to be a bit of a joke. My point is that I wouldn't try and get a cat that's "pure bred," because pure bred animals are oftentimes inbred and expensive. There is also such a huge amount of cats in the world that they have become invasive, so I don't think it's a good idea to try and make even more cats. Also cat breeds are not like dog breeds. With cat breeds sometimes you will see more behavioral traits in some breeds than others, but with cats they all have their unique personalities and aren't necessarily going to act a certain way just because it's a Maine coon or whatever. Cats are going to act like a cat, and how they're raised and treated has a bigger impact than whatever breed they are. I've raised 8 cats in my lifetime and they all tended to act pretty differently than each other even though they were all just regular american shorthairs from what we know. My cat Einstein is supposedly a Maine Coon mix, just based on some of his features, but since he was kinda socialized a bit later than our other cats he's timid and doesn't like to be pet as much as them.

My Burmese cat loved everyone…my kids and dog, too! I’ve heard the same from others. They are excellent family pets! My son liked to carry him around like a baby, and he put up with anything. He was also a great, active playmate. They will knock things over and tear around, but they are easy to get along with if you don’t mind a little disarray. They calm down after their kitten phase, but it can last 2 years or so. They love to watch you doing any and every activity, but mine did not try to “participate.” He would mimic us, instead. When we would clean house, he started “putting away” all his toy mice in his food bowl. He would take out a mouse and play with it, then remove the mice and eat his meal. He wanted that predation before he ate. We thought he was very clever, to catch on to what we were doing and categorize items. His way of doing so was amusing! I never thought to put his toys in his food dish, but it made perfect sense. He became a first rate cuddler, at about 5 years. Before that, he would wear himself (and the kids) out and only want to cuddle in bed when he was tired. They are so much fun for young and energetic children, but if you have older kids, I’d suggest getting a second kitten. They love other cats (any breed, but they are small so I chose a small companion because my large boned mixed breed cat bullied him).

@sciencenotstigma95342 жыл бұрын
Burmese cats are the smallest natural breed, in my experience. They are classified as Medium cats because they can weigh 6-12 pounds but they are very compact, and most appear tiny. I let the breeder know my small size preference, and was delighted. My male Burmese was 7 pounds full grown. Some of the females are 6 pounds. The are super sleek, and nice to pet. He needed almost no grooming. Some Burmese cats get lonely if they are left without a companion all day, but I wouldn’t let that stop you. S/he will be very happy to greet you and do everything with you when you get home. When I had only one Burmese, he would just nap all day (I’d find him snoozing in the sun on my lunch break). They are also super cuddlers and great lap cats, if you have to bring work home! They are very playful as kittens, so you would need toys and climbing and scratching surfaces. They are very smart and trainable. Mine never had one litter box lapse, unlike many other breeds I’ve had. Burmese cats are my favorite because their love and loyalty is unsurpassed!

I love this! My Burmese was very curious, but also intelligent and cautious. When I unthinkingly got him a deep dog dish, he would not put his head in the bowl because smart cats will not enter any space that is narrower than their whiskers, to avoid getting stuck. Instead, he would tip out the food with his paw, and eat it off the floor. He soon instructed the dog to do the same! So much for my idea 💡 that a deep dish would be less messy. That’s a wonderful choice! I’ve rescued and adopted more than 30 cats, and fostered about 150 more. 4 of them were purebreds with minor “flaws” that were only issues for purebred shows and breeding. Two won Grand Champion in Household Pet shows. What irresponsible breeders to surrender those kittens…there are many people who would love to adopt them. I have got one purebred from a breeder, as a mental health support cat, but 2 out of 3 of my best ESAs (emotional support animals) were mixed breed seniors from shelters. I click well with a Burmese because I’m autistic and their intelligent sensitivity is very healing to me, but my Burmese had a brood of domestic playmates, once I was able to house more. I would never get a pair of purebreds…always a domestic cat. I read that if everyone adopted 3 cats, there would be no homeless cats. That’s a goal worth aiming for, and mixed breed cats make wonderful pets. A show judge told me Household Pet was her favorite category, because of the all the beautiful variations which result from a larger gene pool. Provided they are raised around humans cats are also well-suited to living with people, as they have had to “sing for their supper.” Btw. I’m no hoarder! My mom had 11 cats when I was born, and I’ve continued to keep multiple cats. I’ve had 0 diseases spread or litters bred. If you can’t vaccinate or spay/neuter, don’t get a cat. If you want your kids to see the miracle of birth and maybe keep a kitten, foster a litter and save several lives! ❤🐈🐈⬛

Random bred cats are less prone to disease. If you do get a cat from a breeder, do research ask about their breeding program so you know if they are careful to add to the gene pool. For example, the American Burmese should not be bred only with other American Burmese, but sometimes bred with foreign Burmese or Thai Burmese.

is a Bengal cat good for someone that never owned cats? I'm a student, 19, living with my parents. I spend most days at home since I don't have friends. I'm not very active but I would love to take it for walks. I want a cat that can stay by my side when feeling down as I suffer from mental illness. it's okay if if has energy but I have a lot of stuff in my room I'm scared it could get thrown down. also my parents don't want a cat with long hair
@sciencenotstigma95342 жыл бұрын
Burmese and Bombays are excellent mental health cats and require little grooming, as they lack the downy undercoat that sheds the most. I know a woman who breeds them specifically as Emotional Support Animals. My Burmese was active and knocked things down, as a kitten, but didn’t destroy my things (clawing, chewing, etc.). Bombays are a typically bit more laid back. If you’re looking for a calm animal, my best ones have been older cats from shelters, at least 6 years old. Cats are less active as they age, and many love to cuddle all day and night, if you need them to. I had 8 years with the 8 year old senior I adopted, and 14 years with a 10 year old adopted cat, which was a wonderful surprise!

To be completely honest I wouldn't recommend Sphynx or Socttish fold cats for first time owners. Even though Sphynx are hairless you still need to bathe them regularly and clean out their ears as their skin gets very oily and can leave stains on your carpet and furniture. As for Scottish folds they are very prone to arthritis, as they are bread with osteochondrodysplasia to make their ears characteristicly floppy, which is very cruel and wouldn't recommend supporting something such as that.

In my experience, the Burmese is the smallest natural breed. My tiny boy was 7 pounds full grown, and I’ve seen females who weigh 6 pounds. (I’ve had 12-15 pound cats). They are extremely loyal and loving. I’ve also found cats with all those qualities at animal shelters and as strays. If that is an option where you live, it’s a solid one. Just make sure to choose a cat that you “click” with, and not get impatient (you seem to know what you want in a companion). In the case of stray cats, they choose you! But if not many people in your area keep cats, you may have to seek out a best friend. I’m excited that you have taken an interest in cats. They are wonderful, loving pets, and don’t need to go be taken outside frequently like dogs do.

Sorry but sphynx cats are the worst cats to own as a first time owner. I’ve had one for about 6 months. You have to clean eyes ears and sometimes butt if you have allergies you will have to wipe them daily. Very energetic cat similar to a dog siamese cat are cool but let’s see how you gonna like it at 3AM when he or she is constantly meowing lol 😂

Yes, my Sphynx was very high maintenance and clingy. I stayed elsewhere for a weekend once, and he had cut himself on a can I had washed to recycle (in the dish drainer), and bled all over the counter and wall. He was absolutely frantic. This is just one example…usually they are ok with enough food and water. My Sphynx wanted constant attention, and would ride on my back and shoulders just to be with me. I love this type of cat, but they could be overwhelming for beginners. I never left him alone again! ❤

Just get yourself a Mau ...or even a cat that's part Mau...you can't go wrong . You'll be able to tell by the "M" outline in dark hair on their foreheads. The other thing about cats...you must socialize them at a young age ( from seven weeks )...if not , then you end up with a barn cat...essentially feral. They will tolerate you...but they can also attack at any moment ...even unprovoked . Also ...one cat is enough because they are territorial animals.
