I picked up this plugin and ran it through plugin doctor. Almost all of the frequencies in the EQ section are accurate. The biggest surprise was how much applying a low pass filter boosted the low end. I was not expecting that from this plugin. I tried every permutation to get the cleanest box sound and the cleanest signal in that configuration still had significant second order harmonics. I can share the cleanest setup if there’s interested. I can share the dirtiest, I mean most colorful, setup as well.

@@TheRecordist For a gentle box sound, turn off preamp/compress/EQL and just use Analog flavor and the condition knob. The master gain knob is digital clean. The analog flavors introduce varying degrees of harmonic distortion and EQ roll off on the top and bottom. The condition knob amplifies the harmonic distortion. Here are my findings. All of the frequency roll offs indicate where it reaches -1db and cuts more beyond that. The first db number is the level of second order harmonics at 1khz with the console at new, and the second one is third order hamonics using the aged setting. At about 75 on the condition knob, the second and third order harmonics are the same volume. (tl;dr - third order harmonics surpass second order harmonics around the 45-75 condition setting) Flavor - Low/High/New(2nd)/Aged(3rd) None - 19hz/24khz/-49db/-17db M-Air - 25hz/11.5khz/-39db/-15db CRN-H - 20hz/10khz/-68db/-17db Console 1 - 22hz/16khz/-38db/-14.5db Console 2 - 22hz/16.5khz/-38db/-17db Fake - 22hz/19.5khz/-68db/-20db My process would be to decide on these settings first, and then enable the others. Like a lot of console emulations, I suspect the effect of this will be cumulative across many tracks. I'm curious how M-Air and CRN-H both at Aged will fare on vocal tracks. These are kind of mild compared to what the preamp does to the sound. If you prefer third order harmonics, definitely use the preamp in mic mode. The EQ section has different box sounds (everything off, EQL on) for each type, but most do less than 1db, except the rolls off -1db at 9khz, and gives a 0.7db bump at 60hz. Unity gain for the plugin is 0.3db on the master gain. I forgot to do that before gathering all of this information, so all of my measurements are off by that much T_T. I hope this helps.

I compared this to the Sonimus N-Console plugin, which is what I use on every channel and bus, and there's really only one key difference between the two box sounds: The Sonimus plugin has a more complex modeling of harmonic distortion. There is a scoop (reduction) in distortion in the vocal range by a LOT, like 60db in some cases. Most of the distortion happens on the high and low end. There's also a crossover point in the order. The low end has more second order harmonics (what I associate as the Neve sound), and the top end has more third order harmonics. By comparison, the Voosteq plugin has a linear application of harmonic distortion. It's basically flat the whole way up. Practically, this means the Voosteq plugin will produce more audible distortion in the vocal range. The Sonimus plugin more clean in the mids, but with hella distortion on the top and bottom, especially when pushed.

So, after using it for 2 weeks now, I just came back to confirm once again that this thing is amazing. I was using the Bx_4000E or sometimes the Bx_9000J in my Mix Bus for a final subtle EQ touch, which already sounded great, and then I replaced them with the VOOSTEQ Model N to try it out in the Mix Bus, with the exact same settings and the saturation at 20 (using the Bertom plugin to visually adjust them precisely), and oh man, things immediately went to a different level, everything went into place and sounded so much more open, the low-end sounds amazing and tight, and the electric guitars blew my mind. Everything is balanced and tight without struggling for space. They definitely got this one right. It’s amazing! Just a final note about the saturation, I once read that the Saturation at 20 is a preference by some engineers when tracking or mixing in a Neve. I use that level of saturation in the Lindell 80 and it also immediately sounds amazing, for instance in electric guitars.

To say I can't believe this plugin is an understatement. Absolutely WOW. I have never heard anything like this from a plugin. the space and detail it draws out is off the charts. Amazing review and made it a must buy, but I still can't believe I got the sound of hardware for £20. I've got seriously back into vinyl in recent years because the analogue sound is incomparable even to Hi-Res streaming. So I tried running streamed audio from my Mac though this and it imparts much of the analogue goodness with nothing other than the Console 1 emulation selected - I nudged the 12k up a few dB to my own taste, but this thing is awesome. Now I'm wondering how I put this on my streamer output...

Check out the song I wrote for it and recorded using that mic: social.tunecore.com/linkShare?linkid=W-sl8lkgs7ufTmJ1PiXSLg It’s got that analog feel. For $20, I can't afford to not get it. I usually just use the controls in FCPX but this does some things for me. Coming from playing with audio in the 1970's and 80's, it's an interface I can relate to. Yes, the difference between "off" and "on" comes through quite nicely. I love what it does for the sound. It puts us "there" with the sound, so that we are not just listening to it. We are in the room with the sound, where the sound is. I love it. FANTASTIC SONG! The lyrics were so spot on and I can see how they just fell into place. "A Grit that Curls Toes." Oh my.......soooo seductive. But will the wife understand it? I mean....it's just sound, right? Hey. Perhaps what you say is correct. In my opinion, they’re incredibly close. It’s hard to pick a winner, but not impossible. If you look at some comments here, you’ll see some share your sentiment and some do not. But one thing is undeniable: $20 is insane for this plugin. Haha. Cheers and happy new year!

it's a good plugin....a little odd and quirky but you can get some really nice full roughness/ toughness out of it. just the way it looks says it. i like it but i don't think it's the best channel-strip but is it even 2024 yet? definitely worth what they're asking. i REALLY like their other plugin Material Comp...maybe even more so....surprisingly useful....and just plain surprising.

Yes. I have Material Comp. I have yet to play with it. Why are your favorite settings?

i've probably only used it 5 times but each time i was surprised at it's diversity of functionality....like you could really clean a thing and give it focus...or you could also gently mangle things even rhythmically. that groove knob is pretty 'groovy'....less than 17 bucks? it's pretty crazy. very stable interface....i liked it a lot each time i used it. seems like a real good company as long as they don't start upping the system-requirements.....very stable on mac os 10.13.6. @@TheRecordist

Plug has good sounds (demoed it), but it's incredibly dark and hard to see. So much so that I can't use it. Strange choice, because the gui is pretty cool otherwise.

Oh. That’s too bad. You must have a very dark monitor. You should email them and tell them that. Maybe they’ll add a brightness dial in future updates.

I did suggest it to them awhile ago, but not holding my breath. My monitors are calibrated for professional color grading work, and this plugin is just very dark compared to OS, DAW, other plugins etc, so the contrast makes it difficult to see it, particularly in the daytime. Sounds great though!@@TheRecordist

@@FreakinOutOnAudio oh. I see. Yes. It is a darker plugin than most. It would be a simple “light mode” addition. I hope they do that. I’m sure it’s not only you who has problems seeing it. It would be worth it for them to upgrade it. But yes. It sounds so good. I use it every day!

Very ugly interface and some aliasing problems on highs, but sounds okay overall. Good for this price. Thanks for showing!

Hmm. I didn’t notice any aliasing problems. Also, it was tested by an audio analyst and she couldn’t find any aliasing issues either. It’s got an oversampling switch as well, but I think I forgot to say that and turn it on. But yes. Great price!

Umm, really, really hard to get past the volume changes! As I'm sure you know by now, every single time something is increased with any volume, you inherently like it more. So be great to see volume changes that are compensated with say a simple gain plugin(can put one on the original track as well to make it fair), and change it typed in exact level matches with a meter plugin like Insight or whatever you've got that's somewhat accurate. The change the levels to match in post or whatnot. Also something to consider for music people is the aliasing and artifacting that comes in plugins with "Analog" emulations or saturation. Cause when you put a channel strip on 90 tracks to mimic a Neve console, all that aliasing adds up in a profoundly negative fashion(in the old days it would sound better with zero plugins on the track, and tbh still to this day that's the case with may plugins out there!). Only a handful of plugins are actually worth using, out of the thousands. Some for this very issue.

You’re absolutely right. When I was first playing with it, I was loudness matching but completely forgot to when I made the video. Secondly, the plugin has an oversampling option - which I use regularly. Not anywhere near the 32x oversampling that Kazrog does on their True Iron though.
