Thanks Robbie! It was because of your reviews that I bought my first chromebook last year. I purchased the HP Chromebook X360 and I LOVE IT! I look forward to your chromecasts every Friday and I appreciate all the hard work that you, Gabe and Joe put in to produce the vids and the site for all of us.

I got a used X360 for less than $500 with the i3 and 8gb and it's an amazing laptop. I've had some crappy $400 HP Windows computers but Robbie's review made me take the chance on the X360 and I'm glad I did. It's super fast, premium feeling, the white and gold color stands out, the keyboard and trackpad are better than on my more expensive X360 Windows laptop at work even though they share the same branding. I'm looking at getting the Lenovo Duet because of his review as well since my iPad Air first generation is on it's last legs and the Duet seems like an iPad Pro killer swinging way above it's $300 price tag.

I bought it almost a year ago and its been one of my favorite laptops of all time(and I've used more than a few) I use it every day. Its my goto machine for a lot of what I do (browsing, taking classes, simple dotnet prototyping). Its a beautiful machine. I love this channel. I gave up on my Windows devices after years of trying hard to make it work, so I moved into Chrome OS and Fire OS. @redyeamans8113 4 жыл бұрын
@@ryanfluck1648 I'm going to say no....NOT a tough transition....largely because I found that the biggest reason I needed Win10 was because of full Microsoft Office. But using Word Apps on Chromebooks and Amazon Tablets (rigged with Google Play) changed that for me, especially since the work I do now does not require a lot of sophisticated elements in Microsoft office. Honestly, the battery life, reliability, fast startup, ease of file maintenance, portability, good sound, etc. from Chromebooks have been enormously helpful. I bought a brand new Win10 laptop with decent specs, and it was significantly slower than a Chromebook that went out of auto-updates last year. I just got tired of having to spend money on crazy specs (Core i7, 12 gig ram) just to get the same level of response. Also, I got tired of Microsoft Software not running well in Windows 10. So after several years, I just said "enough" and made the jump.
@ntphan

@@ryanfluck1648 Depends on what you use on Windows now. I use Chromebook at home but Windows at work. I have no problem using my Chromebook to do my work from home since everything is cloudbase for my work. I'd say unless use/need specific applications not available outside of Windows or Mac, you should be fine with Chromebook.

I completely agree as an owner of the Samsung Galaxy chromebook it's just absolutely amazing. I've managed to get the battery life up a bit. I think it's not bad at all. Can I drain the battery in 4 hours? Yes I can. Can the battery last 8 hours? Yes it can. It just depends on your use case I bought it for a couple reasons. If it weren't for those reasons I'd probably get the pixelbook go. I'm actually still debating on whether I should get it or not...

One thing I would like to see added to this list is how long these devices will be supported by google, now that they are guaranteeing 8 years of support on some newer devices I would like to see that play a bigger factor in what is recommended. There is a pretty large gulf imo for something that will only get a few more years of support vs ones that will get 8 years but this information is quite hard to come by on a model by model basis.

great video as always! one thing though: with all the market, prices and spec shiftings, I would take the mid range category and set a winner for LOW MID RANGE PRICE and HIGH MID RANGE PRICES. It's all because at this price range, there's windows devices that can compete and be relevant. And there's lots of people that would ( still) choose a windows over chrome os if the price are the same.

My younger son uses the dictation option a lot so he talks to it and it types for him. I notice that you did not mention speaker quality in the low price range. I have an old Acer Chromebook 15 / CB3-532. Was around $200 new. I think the speaker quality is excellent. It has been a great chromebook and still works well, even though I have dropped it twice on a tile floor. ( it does take a while for the screen to warm up and come on now.) It has the 2 strip speakers on the sides of the keyboard and it is the 15.6 inch screen which is good for watching streaming movies/TV in bed. I would definitely buy another one. Some of the Acer now have the number keyboard instead of the strip speakers. The other low price chromebooks that I have tested in stores, the speaker quality have a tinty sound. And the others have a smaller screen. I hope when Acer starts getting back in stores that they have not discontinued this one with the side speakers and the price will still be under $250.

Love my Samsung Chromebook Pro (2017). The screen has been its best feature but I also love the light/compact size. @matthewmcb1089
@matthewmcb1089 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Chromebooks are great value instead of windows and mac for the sub $600-700 range but any more than that and it is worth it to get a good windows or mac for all the other features you can't get on chromeOS. Not to mention the absolute bullshit battery of the Samsung Chromebook which I personally think means it should not be the winner.
@tokranepo
@tokranepo 4 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmcb1089 I think that point gets made often, but you should remember it is really only applicable if you feel the Windows/Mac brings something to the table which ChromeOS does not. There are many cases of users for whom this is absolutely the case; they need access to specific applications which make other operating systems more attractive. However, for the users who are not tied to specific programs which limit them to the Windows/Mac paradigm, ChromeOS can absolutely be the preferred operating system. And if you just prefer the way ChromeOS works and have no need to be tied to applications which dicatate that you must have Windows/Mac then why shouldn't you get the fastest hardware you can for your computing experience? I think there are plenty of solid use cases where something like Samsung's Chromebook makes a lot more sense to buy than a similar Windows/Mac laptop. Therefore, I think it is disingenuous to claim that these devices aren't worth it just because similar devices exist with other operating systems.

My dream Chromebook would be a narrow bezel (like the ASUS C434), 15" flip device, 16x10 ratio, 1920x1280 screen with good front firing speakers. Internal specs to match, but it doesn't have to be a super powerhouse. Price it in the $650 range and I'd buy one. A 16x9 ratio screen is fine for watching movies, but not so much for productivity. A 3x2 ratio screen is great for productivity, but not so much for when you want to relax and watch some video content. As such, a 16x10 ratio screen seems to be the best compromise.

Good call. Can we stop with the "5 hour" battery life of the Galaxy Chromebook? Yes, it can run through in that time but I get 8 hours on the regular with mine because I am thoughtful and don't keep the screen on 100% bright. When I do, it drains the battery quicker. That's the trade-off with having the best screen of any Chromebook (and most PC's and Macs) around. It still has one of (if not THE) best keyboards and trackpads around. It's uber powerful and does anything you ask of it. It completely deserves to be the best.

This is probably late, but you really shouldn't. A windows laptop will definitely be a little pricier than most of the lower end chromebooks, but the price to performance is just infinitely better than what you could get with a chromebook. I've used both chromebooks and windows pc's and I can tell you that chrome OS is just so much more limited than windows. It mainly is because windows is just widely more used than chrome os and so more things are made to support it. Assuming your 15 year old son is anything like most 15 year olds, he likes playing games. Steam is the largest pc gaming store in the world, and it doesn't support chrome. While depending on what you buy, he still won't be able to run some games confortably because of hardware specifications. What Im trying to say is, a chromebook is just worse in almost every aspect when compared to windows laptops and aren't worth your money in the slightest.

I'm 16 and I'm getting the first chrome book he mentioned, the Lenovo 3, I only plan to use it for homework and online classes for college(in uk). I don't recommend buying a pricier windows laptop because everything I can't do on my laptop (mostly gaming) I do on my ps4. Hope this helped
@bleepbloop6132
@bleepbloop6132 4 жыл бұрын
@@_Faisal_ well yeah but there isn't a guarantee the son has a ps4 and a windows laptop just offers way more versatility than a chrome book. My chrome book dies running chrome and zoom at the same time. You also get Microsoft off with windows which beats anything you could get on chrome book. You can do anything a chrome book can do and more with a windows laptop but you can't even do a quarter of the things you can do with a windows laptop with a chromebook. If you just want it for those to things I guess its fine? But its still such a huge waste price to performance and application wise to get a chromebook when you could have got a slightly. Ore expensive windows laptop.

@@bleepbloop6132 well i don't know but the higher mid range ones seem fine, but I'm not factoring that he is 15 yrs. Old and most 15 year old kids use ps4 or xbox for gaming, 🤔

It would be nice to see convertible tablets in their own category, since they are a bit of a different beast than a traditional clamshell chromebook and not really always usable in all the same physical setups, like if you need to actually have it on your lap.

What do you think about installing Chrome OS with full PlayStore access or Cloud OS onto an old Windows PC? Which would you install and why?
@BrendanMacWade
@BrendanMacWade 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent review. Phenomenal Chromebook. Too much quality and power for most of us. But for a business, switching to Chrome OS / cloud cuts costs without sacrificing security or hardware quality. These things can be deployed for 6-8 years, and I don't think users will mind. Talk about extending the technology asset lifecycle. So many of us are switching to permanent work-from-home with only occasional travel to an office or distant site. These Chromebooks are more than enough.

Thanks for the video! Do you have a recommendation for a solid small business Chromebook? Like, which price range should I be looking at? I don't need anything fancy, but wasn't something that will be reliable and relatively fast, that will play nice with printers and scanners. In your opinion, how would the Duet hold up for this?

Acer Spin 713 is a great Chromebook and everything about it is stellar, except for the web camera. Webcam is terrible, and unfortunately, that was a deal-breaker for me. I ended up choosing the Pixel Go which has a 1080p camera, great build quality, and excellent speakers, including great keyboard, plus other fantastic features.

I have a Chromebook and like the simplicity of it. I'm looking to upgrade. I found a Lenovo Flex 5 Ideapad (windows laptop) with i5, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD storage for the same price or a little under the price of the Acer Spin 713 and the Google Pixel Go chromebooks. I've always seen CB as a cheaper alternative to laptops. My question is, would you recommend going with a CB when you can get a laptop with decent specs for the same price?

I had the Chromebook Duet, fantastic device for the price, definitely an Android tablet killer. Lenovo knocked it out of the park on that one. Ended up returning it as I needed an actual laptop 2in1 form factor, I really hate the Surface pro like keyboard form factor, try using one on your lap and you'll hate it forever. Ended up with the HP 12b with 8GB ram and Pentium N5000 for 30$ more, and to my surprise turns out to have a backlit keyboard and a very nice aluminium base. The only downside is the HD+ display (not FHD), but it looks really nice and is IPS. The nice backlit keyboard and HP Spectre-like form factor, with 2 thunderbolt USB-C, sd card slot and USB-A port just sold it for me. And the Bang&Olufsen speaker on this are extremely loud too. And not to mention that the N5000 has more grunt than the Helio P60T, and is x86 so can run more Linux apps.
