"Buy the best you can afford" Yes! I wish I had done this. I wasted money on a wheel stand, then upgraded it to a "cheap" (but several hundred quid) full cockpit because the stand was basically unusable, and then within a few weeks upgraded that to an alu profile one as I wanted more rigidity and to attach things to it. I would have saved money by buying the alu profile one in the first place. And the spare cockpit and wheelstand are wasting space in my house. :)

was it the gt omega classic by any chance?
@LeoDavidson
@LeoDavidson 2 жыл бұрын
@@16gero95 No, those were hard to get where I am at the time, I think due to Brexit. I got a Next Level stand. It's fine as far as stands go but I quickly realised stands don't work very well for racing with a normal chair, desk and monitor setup.

Yeah this is ideal. I went from a computer desk I already had straight to 4080 aluminum extrusion. Bought 5 meters of 4080 and 2 meters of 4040, cut it to my dimensions and bolted it up with a ton of brackets. Saved more additionally by not getting a company branded one, which is basically the same design anyway. Buy once, cry once is the saying, but I didn't get hit that bad.

@@KarlGosling I used my desk back on the Xbox 360, and before that an ironing board for GT3 on the PS2, haha. That worked surprisingly well for what it was. TV screens are big and FOV is all wrong on console games anyway so I guess desks or ironing boards in front of the TV are fine for them, but on PC I want the monitor(s) closer. And the pedals or seat would always move. Depends on your floor a bit but I never got it perfect, even in houses where it was OK and with light pedals, it'd still end up moving and having to adjust mid-race, which isn't ideal.

One other thing I think you should mention is a folding option for people like me who are space challenged. I bought a Playseat Challenge last year and I'm very satisfied with it. Now I'm far from a hard core racer so it's more than enough for me, but I think it's an excellent first purchase even for somebody who plans to go on to more serious setups. It's not only foldable for storage, but it's also pretty cheap (Not sure what they're going for now but I got mine for
@KarlGosling

Yeah foldable's take up about as much space as a wheel stand and are IMO a better choice.

I currently only have a Next Level Racing wheel stand. I went with them however because they also have a wheel trough for your office chair's casters. Two casters can go in this trough allowing you to basically stay planted under high braking etc without placing sandals or something to stop you from moving. There is an upgrade rear section if you so wish to get at a later date as well. It's a good stand, there is adjustability, however the wheel moves up/down and forward backward in a diagonal path. Down is away and down, up is forward and closer to you. Not the best but it's also not terrible. It is very sturdy, all metal, square tube, can be folded however it isn't the easiest to do so. Rather heavy as well, but that is a good thing.

Hey Karl, great info for those undecided. I wanted to mention I bought an Extreme Simracing VE 3.0 rig and extremely happy with it. I am using a CSL Elite wheelbase, but have no concerns that it could easily handle a direct drive wheel. It came with a bunch of accessories including the seat, but I also upgraded to the triple screen setup. Just another option for your viewers. I also bought a GT Omega Titan for my son and he loves it as well. He is very accomplished and has won a number of broadcasted races this past year. Happy New Year and keep the great content coming!

Another great video Karl! And Happy New Year. This past year I moved to the GT Omega Titan and initially was a little discouraged with trying to get a comfortable position (seat, pedals, wheel deck all), but after weeks of fussing with it I've been able to get into a comfortable position and am now very happy with it. It was a little frustrating though at first. I run a DD CSL and clubsport V3s with the performance kit and the titan handles them well. Great rig for my needs and setup.

I started with the GT-Ω classic wheel stand and a folding chair. I then upgraded to the Titan / RS9 combo, relegating the Classic to flight sim duty. I agree that the Titan seat-to-pedal relationship wasn't very comfortable. My solution was to make a wooden riser for the seat; about 3" in front and 2" in back. I sit that much higher, plus the tilt brings the seat cushion under my thighs better. Both are relatively inexpensive and I'm reasonably satisfied. I'd like to mention also that the support team at GT-Omega have been very responsive and helpful. One of my packages was damaged in shipping and a part went missing. They shipped a replacement out the same day I contacted them. On my titan order, they were out of seats the day I placed the order, so I just ordered the chassis. The two days later the seats were listed. I wrote to ask that if I now purchased a seat separately, could I have the combo discount? The person immediately responded with a "yes," and we arranged the sale and discount. The only problem I've had is that I never did figure out how to apply Karl's discount code.

I’d highly recommend the gt omega art. It’s really sturdy with my t300 and comfortable too. Lots of adjustability. If you get the monitor stand, I’d recommend getting the art floor monitor stand because you can bring the monitor the best part of a foot closer to you rather than if you got the art monitor mount that fits directly to the art cockpit.

Started with the Apex wheel stand paired with G29. Eventually added the seat base and upgraded to CSL DD and V3 pedals. Great solid cockpit in my opinion. All I did was added a coin in the gap between the end of frame under the seat base, that greatly reduced the bowing affect on braking. Not sure if you know where I am talking about. I started with the same setup as you. Due to space constrains I upgraded to a NLR Wheel Stand DD for the CSW 2.5 and now CSL DD. I do miss the portability of that lil' foldable Wheel Stand Pro (H8A shifter on a horizontal bar, not stands the shifter add-on). The Next Level Racing wheel stand DD is a lot stiffer, but it still vibrates a lot with the wheel. Nice to feel road effects on the pedals. As it's stiff enough not to just flex where the wheel base is, but not so nice for the downstairs neighbors (very poorly isolated apartment / stand on 2 thick rubber anti vibration pads made for washing machines/dryers)

I bought a wheel stand with a built-in chair holder. I don't have the room for a full-blown cockpit unfortunately. It's not a name brand but I've bolted a Moza R5 bundle to it and it is holding up nicely. As someone who is limited on space and needs something foldable and portable, I had originally bought a cheap wheel stand which I used with my desk chair. Was super uncomfortable, my arms would get super tired from being extended too far out to the wheel and my legs would get even more tired from also being extended and having no support. When not using a pedal, I had to have my feet just floating on the pedal which was really tiring for my left leg especially. I couldn't use it for more than 30 minutes at a time and because I was never comfortable, my lap times were not good. Because of this, I wasn't enjoying sim racing and stopped playing altogether. Recently I bought a playseat challenge and am super happy and now play multiple times a week. It is very comfortable and supportive, and I can happily stay in it for several hours at a time. Moral of the story is you need to get something that's purpose-built and comfortable. These cheap stands are really quite terrible and I don't know anybody who has ever been happy with one.

I moved stuff up down back n forward for a couple of weeks and then spent about £30 at B&Q for the flat bar an aluminium 20x20 channel for the bracing . I use a fanatec csw v2.5 wheel base ffb max out belive that about 9-10 nm club sport inverted load cell peddles as stiff as possible and have no flex . See the man man's vid about how to mod .lol you'll find whatever you buy you'll mod it from pc to game and hardware.

The art cockpit is more rigid then the apex with rearframe because you have moded it or out of the box? I have started with a cheap ebay stand, than nlr wheel stand lite, than nlr fgt lite, than gt omega apex which much much better then the fgt lite. And now i have an aluminum rig.... I would suggest to everyone to start with the apex as its very rigid and the other options in that pricerange just can compete.

I need a no or low flex rig that allows wheel height and tilt, seat distance, pedal distance and tilt, and either seat or pedal height. I don't need a monitor mount since I'll be playing in VR. I was considering the GT Omega ART, but it doesn't allow the pedal height adjust, and seems to favor the average-shorter build (I'm 5'10), since those with long legs would have to pull the wheel closer, which puts it higher because of the diagonal displacement - usually too high. I guess I'll keep looking. I'd prefer not to spend more than $500-600 for the rig and seat.

I'm interested in the GT Omega Prime cockpit to go with a Moza R9 and Moza CRP pedal set. i would prefer the added realism of inverting the pedal set so that the pedals pivot from the top as opposed to pivoting from the bottom, As its a topic that isn't covered very often on reviews or videos, im curious if you can see a way in which this would work without major modification of the rig? Also, would you say the Prime cockpit with the RS12 seat is the best value for money (currently £720) or would you say for a similar value there is better on the market? Thanks in advance.

The playseat evolution was ok when it was sub £200 but now it's nudging £300 it's way too expensive considering its many flaws and the GT omega ART is a far better choice for not much extra cash. With foldaway cockpits I have tried both the playseat challenge and NLR F-GT lite. The latter is less compact when folded and quite a faff to set up and put away but much better in use and it's the one I would go for if I wanted a foldaway. I got very lucky and recently bought a NLR GT Track used for just £350 and the upgrade from my evolution was enormous. It's a very stable cockpit with no movement or flex worthy of mention. I'd strongly recommend looking for a used cockpit if you're starting out, some stuff is stupidly priced as is the way with a lot of things now but I've seen a good number of bargains too. Another cockpit I really like the look of and would like Karl to cast his eye over is the rock solid rigs RSR21. Made of ply and the reviews I've seen of it suggest it's a beast of a cockpit.

I found that, for me with a 3060 ti, I can run it full resolution at either 80hz(high quality 79-81fps) or 70hz (ultra 68-71 fps). At 90hz you definitely need to crank down the resolution anywhere between 1.2 /1.4 to get into the 80's fps. It's surprising how much performance is impacted by the refresh rate. Very much a two edged sword. I find that I don't really notice much of a difference above 70fps. However, I prefer free roam cruising to racing. I'm sure when I get into racing I'll want to crank up the fps and crank down any unnecessary eye candy :) (It also makes me want to plug in my old quest and see how it does with these settings given that it has an OLED display vs LCD) It'll be interesting to see what the next couple of years bring. Right now the real bottleneck seems to be GPU processing for VR. They're adding VR extensions to GPU's but I wonder how long before a VR-Specific GPU is created? FidelityFX and DLSS seem a step in that direction.
