Sapele really is nice. I appreciate the simple forms because quite often they require the most skill to get right. There is nowhere to hide any mistake. Nice set of containers.

Thank you for inspiring me to come out of a semi-comatose/semi-retired state. I have assembled most of the tools(and many that are niceties like my sawmill) needed to be a turner, but never gave it a go. I'm deep into the learning process now and it is so much more satisfying than my previous career. Luckily, I have a pension that covers all my recurrent expenses and health insurance; giving me time to develop into an income producing turner. I spent my childhood farming and working in the woods, so it feels a lot like coming home. Now, I just need to sell this oversized, overpriced subdivision box and get back into the sticks. I think the neighbors would appreciate me, and my noises, relocating...LOL.

You make very precise work look easy. That is one of the signs of mastery! All 4 are similar while each has distinctive features. That's art. Like you, I often hollow small end grain boxes with a gouge and scraper. Slightly larger work or when the mood strikes me, I hollow with a hook tool. I've made about 6 with differing curves and offsets. I'd appreciate your thoughts on using a hook tool for end grain work in a future vides. Keep up the inspiration!
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 5 ай бұрын
Thank you John, Honestly I don't use hook tool,I just never been around one and Here we are more based on these classic gouges and scrapers. Now that being said, I did watch a lot of Japanese turners and proper hook tool they made there own works lovely and without too much effort.... And its 99%cutting wood and that will give nice finish... I just find using scrapers to finish endgrain stuff more user frendly and also more control for me.... Again hook tools are great once mastered.

Another excellent video! As for your English, that is also excellent. You have an easy command of idioms and seem to be as conversant as, well, most Americans I know. And who needs articles?! Just adds to the cool accent -- youcan now play a spy in a James Bond movie. What you _can't_ do is tech support on the phone. Your English is too good!

You do really nice work and interesting designs. I notice your finish of choice seems to be oil. What kind of oil is it, as I found that oil tended to need redoing in about 6 months. Lately my finish of choice on smaller pieces such as these or trinket boxes is home made shellac friction polish that dries practically instantly. These pieces and finish look beautiful by the way.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 5 ай бұрын
Thank you Ronald, I use either tung oil with citrus solvent or linseed oil.... Both work great and I like that kind of look, some may not.... Friction polish is good also , and if you like it,stick with it☺️

Beautiful boxes. Love the fit of the top and bottom. I take it is the long tenon with a close fit that creates the slow close and slight pop at release, correct?

Yes,well its much easier to get it that way instead of having short small connection.... This was inspired by smartphone boxes that have that kind of fit ☺️
