The best combo for your Sawyer Squeeze water filter is not the CNOC bag, it’s a great bag but it doesn’t fix the biggest issue with the Squeeze! This combo with the HYDRAPAK system is great! Easy to use and not to heavy and make collecting and filter your water much easier.
I bought the Sawyer Squeeze last year and let me tell you, the included bags are just crap! I tried them out and really gave them a chance but NO! For this system to work you need another container for dirty water... so I gave it a thought and found the Hydrapak system and LOVE IT! And i hope you do to!

I used to have trouble with the seal washer falling out, but I discovered the problem was only that I was over-tightening the filter when screwing it onto the CNOC bag. Once I learned how to properly tighten the filter, which is fingertight plus maybe a quarter turn, I have never had the seal washer fall out, not once. The filter does not leak at the CNOC connection when tightened in this manner, either.

I just cut a new washer from a stiffer viton rubber, no problem with it getting pushed into the bottle mouth, no leaks and far less likely to fall out. A spare washer is 30 seconds work to cut.

The CNOC bags look to be better when the water source is very shallow. I live in the western USA so this is common. They also look to be better for hanging (as someone else mentioned and you addressed in a different comment) and that is my preferred method. And as David said, I too carry a spare o-ring. Never needed it myself (so far), but did give it to a needy hiker one time. I liked your video and you made enough good points that I might try your system.

Great system thanks! I'm using a Hydroblu Versa Flow currently, which makes up for the (really) low flow rate by being able to screw a CNOC bag on either side for lazy filtering. @@queennieniebob I have noticed the same, especially in warmer weather there's a bit of leakage out of the top. Having tried the carbon filter attachment as well I do still love it for peaty ground where the water is going to be brown otherwise, but I do prefer a katadyn for hikes with cleaner water

I've always carried a spare O-ring for my Sawyer (Micro) - never needed it yet. You're right about those Sawyer supplied bottles, worse than useless because they have a tendency to burst at the join with the neck without warning, leaving you without filtering options in the wild. Evernew and Platypus bottles have never let me down like that, so I just use a 1.5L Evernew (35g) for filtering and a 2L Platypus (26g) for clean, using my coffee cup (the one I also pee in during the night, Wildo fold-a-cup large size in case you're interested) to gather the water and pour into the Evernew. The simple Sawyer coupling (4g) joins the clean end of the filter to the Platypus bottle and will also facilitate backflushing in the field and gravity feed. It's not as fast as the full Squeeze or the Katadyn, but it's fast enough for me and it's reliable and about as lightweight as it gets.

+1 on this system, punch some holes into the reinforced portion of the Evernew bag, attach some dyneema cord and remove the rubber washer from the blue adapter included with the micro squeeze to prevent hydraulic lock - presto ~94g system! I think the best/easiest system is using 2 “smart water” 1L water bottles. Have one for clean water and one for dirty water. Filter one bottle of water and then fill the other with dirty water and just use the sawyer squeeze like a straw on the dirty water bottle.

I switched my system to a CNOC "dirty bag" and smart water clean bottle. Filling a smart water bottle is a pain, especially from shallow water sources. Its also easier to push water through the filter by rolling up a bag than squeezing a bottle. I found the weight difference wasn't too much for my pack.

Thanks for the video. I was looking at the CNOC bags so was doing some research when I came across this video which alerted me to a potential issue. I noticed that HydraPak has a Force hydration bag which seems similar to a CNOC bags except with a Plug n Play connection instead of a 28 mm opening. Could the Force hydration bag be used instead of the bottle and cap with the adapter, which will still give the benefits of the CNOC bag being that it opens on the other side for better water collection?
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh 10 ай бұрын
That’s an interesting combination, seems to be the same plug n play connection so it seems you can, if you have the adapter on the sawyer you could click it into the Force bag directly… haven’t tried, but looks possible! A bit strange angle maybe… if you decide to buy it, please let me know!!
@zoegagnon3651

You may be able to use the adapter and cap on the CNOC bag if you add another o-ring to the cap. That should create a seal, and you could leave both parts on, since you can fill the CNOC bag from the other end. This also helps with very shallow water sources, since the HYDRAPAK can't lay flat like a CNOC can.

First time here and I was a bit skeptical at first, but cool video. A few points here: - I never experienced any problems with the seal, but maybe some people did. - You can use a garden hose o-ring to replace the one from the Sawyer. - You can also cut a little piece of one of those cheap blue pad and make an o-ring (did that for the mini). - The Sawyer Squeeze come with two inline adapters and I think it could fit instead of buying the Hydrapak's one (maybe someone can try and tell us). - The Hydrapak system you showed us is nice, but I'd use that only for short hikes, The Cnoc is still best if you need to filter lots of water at base camp. - The Hydrapak system is nice, but two Smart Water bottles is still a lot lighter and costs way less. But Hydrapak + 1 Smart Water is less bulky. There's always a trade-off when it comes to the outdoors ;)

I have the Cnoc VectoX 42mm and the newer version of the Hydrapak Plug-n-play cap(black latch ring). This fits and is air-tight. However, make sure you completely remove the original Cnoc cap with the ring that holds the cap to the bottle. Is there any reason I should not buy the ring converter and use the Sawyer bags for clean water and the CNOC bag for unfiltered water? It's why I speculated (in above post) about the Accmor shaker. There also seems 2b low demand for integrated Post-filters (such as my Katadyn-carbon-cartridge) which awkwardly dangles from the Sawyer via tubing. Each of these is an extra layer of jumble. Not to mention the fleece "receiving-blanket" my Sawyer is swaddled in for insulation!

@roberthammenrudh 6 ай бұрын
Hi 👋🏻 and yes, the cleaning procedure is counter flow direction using a plunger or bottle sports cap. That flushes out sediment and stuff to get the filter going again if you experience clogging. For that you don’t need to take the adapter off and just flush from the other end.

@@roberthammenrudh Thanks Robert 🙂 what five-dollar filler-item would be most useful to add to the adapters-and-bottle to get free-shipping? Though I still don't understand how the sediment particles can manage to exit the narrow adapter-aperture that's screwed to the other end of the Sawyer. I also don't grasp what you mean by bottle sports cap. How can a sports cap flush dirt out? Also IMO the Sawyer needs a BeFree sorta squeeze bottle as it seems flexible and durable, more so than CNOC or Platy.

@@minniyoutubaster not sure what you mean about the 5 dollar item you want? When it comes to the cleaning the Sawyer Squeeze you back flush using a plunger normally and what also is included in the set from Sawyer. What I mean is, you use a water bottle like a PET or Smart Water bottle and attach a sports cap and use that as a plunger for back flush the filter for cleaning, the sediment you rinse out is small so problem exiting the hole in the adapter! I believe I show this in this movie, or the review movie about the Sawyer Squeeze, so take a look there. Take care //Robert

@@roberthammenrudh OK maybe i'll find your other review, thanks. What I meant to ask - is that you linked to the Hydrapak bottle, the plug-n-play cap & the filter adapter. But the total of those items is $5 short of the $45 minimum required for free-shipping. But I don't know which of their other items is most useful to add as a filler, to qualify for free shipping. I believe some reviews say that cartridges tend to freeze (thus break) in cold weather. So i'm considering sewing velcro to a strip of fiberglass insulation. Then wrapping the insulation around the Sawyer-filter & fastening it with the sewn-on velcro. Or even adding some parachute-cloth to the exterior of the insulation, and sewing the velcro to that.

P.S. I found your other review. Your backflushing info is at 3:50 on Slider. When you stated "dedicated sports cap" I suppose you can use the Push-Pull-Cap that came with the Sawyer, and just screw any bottle you can flexibly squeeze onto the push-pull cap?

HydroBlu is better in almost every respect. HydroBlu is lighter, seals at both ends with lanyard-caps that don't get lost, has the correct (Male, 28mm) threads at both ends for gravity-feed (no adaptors required), back-flush port built-in, 100kL life, inspection-window and no sealing-rings to lose. It's small and looks like the Sawyer-Mini, so people think it can't flow, but it flows better than Mini, Micro, Platypus and BeFree, especially after a few uses. ** HydraPack bag system looks sketchy, but so is CNOC. Besides popping pinholes way too often, CNOC requires opening/closing both ports every fill. Not a fan of Platypus's similar snap-connector, but might take a further look at Hydrapack?

Very nice setup. You really need to re-evaluate yourself if a few grams is to much to carry. I personally don’t understand the ultra light backpackers. Maybe because I’m ex-military. In the infantry we road March once a month for training 12miles usually done in 2 hours. To get into Ranger Bat we had a forced March 12miles in 1hour45 min. With gear and water plus a 45pound sandbag. Everyone’s ruck was weighed before and after. I remember I had to carry 400rounds for the m60 plus the tri-pod. My partner got sick with a few others. When I complained my ruck weighted like 65-75lbs they told me to get stronger. Lol Anyway why are so many KZbin people pushing 2brands sawyer and kayadyn? I wonder why more people aren’t using membrane solution. I say this because after get one, I see the 6l bag model. The 6liter bag model is $28. What really blows me away is it also has carbon filter plus is totally rebuildable. They sell new filters everything can be disassembled an cleaned but most importantly checked. I believe being able to replace a filter for$7. Would be a game changer. Everything you have to buy and rig on the sawyer you get for the price of just the sawyer. Can you think of a reason why not to use membrane solutions? I’m just curious, I’m more a hiking fisherman. I travel to a river or lake then camp. I’m not worried about crunching miles anymore. I enjoy a hike with everything I need to enjoy myself. I like chairs and full toothbrushes 😂 Just my humor but I wonder what’s your opinion on membrane solutions filter?

Hi 👋🏻 as a ultra-light backpacker I do evaluate every gram and if I can choose something lighter, with maintaining the functionality and safety I will 🤷🏼‍♂️ it’s a mentality. Anyways… regarding the filter and why hollow fibre technology and not the membrane well… I would say it’s easier to find light weight solutions, the only mambrane filter and portable and small is the Lifestraw… I think 🤔 if you have any other brands please let me know! 🙂

4:00 So, you held the system in the air upside-down and said "Use it as a gravity filter." but is there anything to hang it from on the bottom? You were holding it with your hand, but I don't see any way to tether it for a gravity hang. Maybe it's there, but isn't apparent in the video. I like my CNOC. This seems like solving problems that aren't problems (at least not for me). I carry an extra washer for my Sawyer. I don't have trouble scooping water with my CNOC. The setup for gravity filtering is easy with the CNOC. CNOC also makes a collapsible bottle and I would wager it weighs less than these. Interesting product/option, but I don't see this as a winner.
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh 4 ай бұрын
Hi 👋🏻 and yes you are right, no loop exists for it to hang like a gravity filter but, one can use the net bag that follows with the purchase of the Squeeze. The Hydrapak bottle weighs 6 grams more compared to the 1L CNOC collapsible bottle so not a big difference. This system is great if one prefers the click on/off function (like I do) and don’t want to risk loosing the seal. If not the standard CNOC bags are great and especially for gravity filtration.

@@tomnoyb8301 the familiar voice of inexperience. If you lose the cap it’s becomes just as terrible as… all other squeeze filters without a cap. Just means you’ll want a baggy to put it in before you put it in your quilt at night. Unthreaded clean side makes for the simplest back flushes ever. Any clean bottle works, any. No ridiculous extra back flush syringe needed or special bottle cap to sort of work. Backflushing is so quick and easy you don’t need to prefilter super silty water. Additionally, there’s the integrity test sanctioned by the manufacturer so you can ensure your filter didn’t get too cold and that it continues to be be effective even after 1k. After years of sawyers and a half season of be free, I’ll never look back. Junk indeed.

@@phillipp1399 - Don't be so down on yourself for your inexperience. Guess you never tried HydroBlu. HydroBlu's caps are attached so they don't disappear. But you're correct, losing a cap is annoying and inconvenient, but not the end of the trip. Sealing the thing in a baggy isn't going to leak too often? No, but not having threads on the output is really a disadvantage for gravity filtering. No back-flow syringe required when filter has proper 28mm threads on both-ends. Oh, your's doesn't have any output threads? An experienced hiker would know better but hey, you'll get there. @@phillipp1399 - Goal is to have manufacturers advance the gear, not go backwards. Quick-Draw is the newest filter and it's a step backward. It's worse than its predecessors. So to have some noob defending the step-backward gives those designers incentive to produce worse and worse gear. This is happening everywhere. NU25 is worse, wpb-dcf is worse, Carbo20000 is worse. Everywhere we look, gear is getting worse and technology is declining. In part, because of inaccurate feedback to product-manufacturers who read these comments sections.
