Damn… this was a good episode. One of the few things that I miss about growing up in NJ that I don’t have here in South FL is mushroom picking, so you’re tugging at my heart strings. Lol. We used top get TONS of Chanterelles in the fall around the pine trees (we never got Chicken of the Woods. Didn’t really know about them back then). And steamers are another thing I miss. I mean, there’s a few seafood markets and restaurants to buy them here in FL, but they cost an arm and a leg compared to up north. I’m moving to NC next year, and apparently the potential for mushroom harvesting is pretty good around , so I am definitely looking forward to that again. And we always enjoy seeing a cameo my Momma Clams!

It’s cool watching you digging up clams brings up lots of memories of my childhood. I also remember you could throw a decent size rock about 10-20 feet away from you and you could see all the clams squirt up the water after the rock hit or you could just stop on the ground but it’s best to bring a pitchfork specially when searching for a little necks that’s what we used to call them in Connecticut

Why don’t the deer or other animals eat the mushrooms?
@Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger Жыл бұрын
Not every animal views fungus as food; foxes like mushrooms, slugs do too, but I dont think ive ever seen a deer eat a mushroom now that I think about it. Could be the chitin; humans technically can't digest chitin and mushrooms are full of it, but we cook it to the point we can break down some of it. For a deer idk if their body can digest it or if they maybe have some different gastrointestinal response to it than we would; my guess is either they do eat them (not this variety) and we just dont know, or the entire species has written mushrooms off on account of risk of poisoning?
