Fun Opeth story. My twin bro a million miles away in the Bavarian Alps introduced me to your content. Keep rockin, dude. We're also 1988'ers.

Nate, the story (and I am pretty familiar as I got the story directly from a former member of Opeth who was in the band at the time) on Lopez was that he was essentially sent home as some extracurricular issues were affecting his health/performances (issues with anxiety problems performing). He got hep and has been doing well obviously since he's got Soen the last many years.

Just saw Skeletal Remains in Cleveland Ohio a few weeks ago. They were great - cool merch too! Saw Necrot with Gatecreeper a few years ago both were excellent - they opened for Exhumed. All death metal favorites for me.

I did check that album out a bit yesterday - it sounded different and great! You mentioned feeling something when listening to metal - the bands that always do that for me are Opeth, Cannibal Corpse, Ghost, and Taake. Maybe even Satyricon (early albums). Cheers.

Dude, I was just listening to that Morbus Chron record this morning. (I've been going back through the 2010s, listening to about 200 albums from each year before moving on.) Definitely some different stuff. If you've never heard a band called The Ruins of Beverast, Morbus Chron reminds me of them somewhat

It’s a great album, I got the feeling when I was 12 years old and hearing morbid angel for the first time. The riffs and the atmosphere are so killer.

Love these points, just subbed. I felt the same listening to this album, but was pretty skeptical going into it, though. I figured the newer bands wouldn't be releasing anything quality this year. Was bummed out by a lot of DM albums this year. So far the only albums from this year that I will be listening to in the future was from Ulthar, Incantation, Cruciamentum, and Majesties. All the others I'll forget about. Hard to find DM worth while.

Thanks for answering my question about BMI! Now I feel good about paying them. Time to go fill up the weekend playlist with some Spirit Adrift. I always hope that customers will SoundHound stuff and get turned on to new things. I had one the other day that did that when Traffic’s Medicated Goo was on.

New Wayfarer and Malokarpatan are good examples of things I think people will still be listening to in 30 years.

I know you said you don't read the comments here anymore, but thanks for the Cruciamentum rec. I just picked up the vinyl. If someone put this on and told me it was straight out of the 90's heyday I wouldn't question it. Awesome record.

I'm wagering he stopped reading the comments because he was tired of people pointing out that albums like this actually aren't that special. Just sounds like bands like Krypts, Ataraxy, Bedsore, Tomb Mold. Some records that came out almost ten years ago haha.

I get tempted to put out my list earlier, but I usually wait until Krampusnacht to release the Lucky 13 beasts to give myself a chance to give the new stuff some listening time. I am still absorbing the Cruciamentum. Here's two others that are late entries to my list: Plague Rider - Intensities (Transcending Obscurity) Nov 10 Panopticon - The Rime of Memory (Bindrune): Actually comes out tomorrow. I'm always on the verge of never needing to hear a new black metal album again, but then Austin Lunn releases a new album. There is more and more music released every year, and it's easy to get burned out trying to keep up. For the most part I try to be zen about it and let the chaff slide off my skin like a wet otter and don't get too bothered about it. Not everyone can be great artists, and not everyone can recognize or appreciate a great artist, but I firmly believe there's no lack of great albums the past few years. Consider this -- part of our expectations for innovation and the shock of the new is tied to capitalism. It's good business for new subgenres and styles to become fashionable. But compare back to the history of music going back centuries, when folk and classical evolved much more slowly. People weren't saying, "violins are so irrelevant, let's move on" like they say about guitars. Not sure why guitars were targeted. No one complains about hearing acoustic drums and pianos in all genres of music, even the synth based pop.

You mentioned Morbus Crohn and Sweven as one of the last decade's favourite. Bravo, man! What a phenomenal choice among thousands of excellent releases , wow. Came out of nothing. ❤ It shows your wisdom and true passion for the "real"stuff. Many will keep on searching but only a few have the heart to find it. You are one of the very few. Excellent content, super KZbinr.

I was thinking, there is another death metal record that people will likely be listening to in ten years - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse by Ad Nauseam. Italian dudes. The story behind the album is super cool. Apparently they made their own instruments and recording gear and had minimum post production. You can read all about it, but it's about as DIY as it gets and it's an amazing death metal record that made a fairly big splash in 2021. A masterpiece in my opinion.

I haven’t really listened to new dm this year tbh and I need to check this out but my favorite new thing I heard this year was the new void ceremony album. It’s really good, it reminds me of death symbolic era.

The south def was a big factor in rock n roll and other modern genres , but I think folk music from Scotland/Ireland pre 1900 is also mixed in along with Appalachian music to get to where we are...

Thanks for the recommendation! And this topic is so fascinating. I recommend a lot of records to friends - good records. But you're right - if we are honest, relatively few albums are truly PHENOMENAL, absolute life-changers. I guess sometimes I feel like I'm not always an "album guy" because for me - albums I really enjoy tend to have a few tracks that stand above the rest and remain in playlists - whereas the rest don't make it. That means I have dozens of records in regular rotation - but it's only a few songs from each. Even my absolute favourite albums - do I love every song equally? no. Cool thoughts and a thought provoking topic!

Awesome!!! RIP Geordie, been listening to a lot of killing joke last couple days. My mums favourite band so grew up with them. If you like chvrches you might be surprised by one of the guys bands preceding chvrches called aerogramme. Check out zionist timing or their cover of lightning strikes the postman. They did a joint EP with ISIS back in the day.

Haha... I played in a band in the early 2000's and we played with Aerogramme at the Khyber Pass in Philadelphia. There were like 20 people there. I will admit... Zionist Timing is pretty decent. It even appeals to screamo fans.

I'm more of an OG Death Metal fan. I mean any recent Cannibal record of the last 10 years can be here, but I really like Benediction's last one- Scriptures, and Deicide Overtures Of Blasphemy from '18

Check out this band from like Wisconsin called Yotuma. At times the modern production sounds different.... there are some other slight influences.... but for the most part it's basically Bolt Thrower type worship. Definitely doing something not super common place. If you want to check out some old school style but modern more techie stuff alla Deicide check out Conjureth..... which is the guitarist from Eternal Suffering from back in the day.

I'm waiting on your tour dates man I am pumped to meet you and see your band live in Munich. Cheers - Ryan

What is "representation" in metal? I ask this as someone who is certainly not a conservative or right winger.... not totally on board with liberalism or hard leftism, especially in it's current state... So for someone like me.... is this the typical back and fourth about who should and shouldn't be allowed or did I just accidently stumble upon an even newer and more confusing concept that makes enjoying things unenjoyable?

Better yet... this album sounds like a ton of albums that came out on labels like 20 Buck Spin and stuff years ago. Krypts, Bedsore, Tomb Mold, Ataraxy, even hints of some more techie stuff like Disentomb.

Thanks for calling out the aoty 🤡. I’ve always felt this way, i used to be on Twitter and it always made me laugh when people did their lists and had 100 aoty! 😂 how are 100 albums aoty?? My lists were maybe 5 at the most, I’m not an elitist or whatever either but something has to really make me feel something or have a real impact to be an aoty. These clowns on twitter listen to 30 secs of one song and tweet “omg this new whatever band name is an aoty!”

I'm starting this comment upside down. As for Death Metal oversaturation - yes, it's true. But it has been a good year for Death Metal; 200 Stab Wounds - Masters of Morbidity (EP is also great, LP less so, ignore the salty review on Metal Archives/lol). Februus - Surveillance Orgy (one man band, greeeeat, off kilter stuff - this one deserves wider attention). Static Abyss - Aborted From Reality (Doom/Death project from Chris Reifert of Autopsy..... so good!!). Deathgrave - It’s Only Midnight (Sludge infused DM from Brainoil chap, also in Static Abyss/Autopsy). Ulthar (Techy DM with shades of BM, I enjoy it - released on 20 buck spin). Disengagement - Formless in a Violent World (OSDM from the UKHC scene, featuring Tom 'Midas Touch' Pimplott, but I'm biased as I'm a 'The Flex' flexosexual). And several genre stalwarts - Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Autopsy have all made solid additions to their catalogue. Anyway, HxC kids get a bad rep because of boring shit like Frozen Soul and Sunami popping off. But the HxC scene is responsible for some of the best metal records of the last decade: Power Trip, Magic Circle, Foreseen, Pest Control (okay maybe I'm cheating with the crossover bands for the last two, but Obituary took PC's as support for UK tour per Obi request). But yeah - nice to have someone notice the Doom/Stoner rock boom that happened. I remember seeing EW around 'We Live' times and heh, venue was half empty! In London! Then similar with Catherdral and a young band at the time - bloody Witchcraft! Shame at the time I was still in the initial melo-death stage of in flames, at the gates, the haunted, arch enemy etc, it went right over my head. Now let me stop my procrastination…
