I thought you can create a Drive pool using the NVME drives?
@clearontech Жыл бұрын
You can, I didn't have them on this NAS though. It's supported on this model and also others at this link: kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutorial/Which_models_support_M_2_SSD_storage_pool

Really appreciate your video! Confirming... I'm assuming from your presentation that the DS723+ requires, but ships without the 16 GB RAM card? Is that correct? Thanks!
@clearontech Жыл бұрын
Correct. The 16GB of RAM is NOT included, but it's also NOT required. The DS723+ comes with 2GB of RAM pre-installed. This should be enough for most use cases. However, if you're planning on running a VM, you will need to install more RAM. There are two slots for RAM for a total of 32GB (16GB x 2). Great question, I will add some details to the description.

@@clearontech What is VM.

VM = Virtual Machine. You can install various operating systems (Windows, Linux, and DSM) with a package you install on the Synology. Similar to Parallels on a computer - www.parallels.com/ These VM's need hardware resources, so you would be taking some memory, processors and disk space from the Synology and give it to the VM while they're running. Like any computer, the more resources you have the more you can do with it. Here's a link to the Synology's that support the Virtual Machine Manager package, this package is needed to install and run the VM's - www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/packages/Virtualization

Thank you for this clear explanation. Appreciate it. Would you be able to tell me why you chose 'RAID 1' instead of 'SHR' (which seems to offer similar fault tolerance)?
@clearontech7 ай бұрын
@Xtapolapaketl You could use either one as they will function in similar ways. The SHR will give you more options to expand, like moving to a NAS with more drive bays. However, RAID 1 is pretty standard and if you loose operation of your NAS (it dies) and you need quick access to your files, the RAID 1 would be easier as its not proprietary like SHR.

I would have liked to have seen how you could access it from other computers or cell phones. or how you load files onto it from your computer or phone.

Thanks for the comment. I'm working on a follow up to this and will show you how to access the NAS in different ways.

I see that you are not installing NVMe SSD in your setup. Could these be installed later and upgrade without having to rebuild the drives? I'm thinking about either buying them now or later.
@clearontech6 ай бұрын
Yes you can add them later, assuming you will use them as cache storage, this is the only way I use them. You can use them to create a storage pool, however you can't install the DMS on them, they are not hot swappable and will not mix with other drives in a storage pool. See this link for additional details: kb.synology.com/en-us/DSM/tutorial/Which_models_support_M_2_SSD_storage_pool

Which model do I need to be able to upload photos and files from a computer automatically as well as from phones automatically all while still being able to access them right away from a computer or cell phone.
@clearontech Жыл бұрын
You can store photos and files on all the models. What do you mean by "automatically"? There is not a option to discover files and photos on your device and move or copy them to the Synology.

Why only synology accessories? I prefer WD Red HDD and i already have a 1TB M2. NVMe lying around. Plus the OWC RAM is cheaper.

Since this was for a clients business, I wanted everything under the same brand to avoid disputes if Synology support was needed by the client in the future.
