Actually, I followed your advice a year and a half ago, buying the combination Trebleet enclosure and Sabrent Rocket. The result was DISASTROUS. My M1 Mac mini kept spontaneously disconnecting the drive. I complained to Apple and they spent three months doing a bazillion tests on the mini, eventually replacing my entire logic board. But the problem stayed the same all the way through. I complained to Trebleet, and they said sorry, not our fault: must be your Sabrent Rocket. So I complained to Sabrent, and they said sorry, it must be your Trebleet enclosure. So I went back to Trebleet again, and they suddenly announced that they had changed their list of compatible SSDs, marking the Sabrent Rocket as “incompatible with Apple computers”. Oh, and the Sabrent warranty? They refused to honor it. Net result, after following your recommendations last year, I have a $450 paperweight on my desk.

I bought the 1TB Sabrent Rocket SSD on your recommendation and it was a disaster!! It heated up to such high temperatures that I couldn't touch it! Yes, that hot!! Turns out it was faulty, had to return it to Amazon (a lot of hassle and time wasted waiting for a refund). I wasn't confident that a replacement wouldn't have the same issues. So I ordered a Seagate One Touch SSD 2TB for an extra €80 over the Sabrent and it's purring like a kitten! It's smaller, totally cool to the touch and works perfectly! So go for the Seagate instead of the Sabrent!

I had the same problem with 2TB Sabrent Rocket. It got super hot just idle. It got so hot transferring 390gb it crashed the M1 Max. I’m retuning the Sabrent and got the Samsung 980 Pro 1TB. Sabrent is really fast 2.6gb transfers but runs too hot that fast.

You have to be careful with gen4. m.2 they heat up a lot more than gen 3. I use a gen 4 as my boot and it has a special built heatsink to handle the heat. Other m.2 drives also have D-ram and high endurance which is very important.

Externals are basically used as mobile storage for transport of smaller files. So, if you're looking for superfast storage with massive capacities, (IMO) you're better of with a small NAS. But if you're in need of an oversized flash drive, any off-the-shelf enclosure and medium-quality SSD will do the trick, with minimum compatibility issues. Building stuff is always better, but people get worked up at amazing speeds that are completely unnecessary for an oversized flash drive.

@NoEgg4u2 жыл бұрын
The TBW value that manufacturers provide have nearly zero useful bearing on how long your SSD will last. The value provided is for the manufacturers to have an excuse to not replace a failed drive (if you exceed the TBW figure, you end your warranty -- and the drive keeps track). There is a crypt-o mining application named "Chia". The process involves creating huge files. The process to create those huge files uses "temp" space. The faster your "temp" space performs, the faster your huge files are created. So most people use NVMe drives for the temp space (a RAM drive is faster, but you need a minimum of 256 GB of RAM). Every file created by the Chia process uses over 1 TB of writing to the NVMe drive. People that are avid Chia miners have been hammering away at their NVMe drives for nearly 2 years, 24 hours a day, non-stop. No one has yet to wear out their NVMe drive. Software shows that their drives are "critical", based on them exceeding the manufacturer's TBW value. This is to get people to buy replacement drives. But the Chia miners ignore the "critical" message, and keep processing for over year since they got the "critical" message, and without any performance drop. So when you are shopping for an NVMe drive, you can ignore the TBW value, other than if you expect to exceed that value which will end your warranty. If your NVMe fails, it will not be because of how much data you have written to it. Your NVMe drive will still be working flawlessly, long after you are 6 feet under. You could not wear it out if you tried.

Max - I’m reading comments from Trebleet saying that people are having problems with the Sabrent rocket SSD’s used with M1 Macs - including the M1 MAX chip. Apparently Apple has some “write limiting” software that appeared with the Big Sur 11.02 update. Trebleet is recommending using other SSD’s from their “compatible” list because this issue seems to be mainly related to Sabrent Rocket SSD and not with some other brands. Can you look into this and update this video? I want to build a 4TB system but before I spend the money on the Sabrent SSD you recommended, I want to get this issue clarified; and, IF there is an issue, please recommend an alternative SSD for those of us with M1 machines. Personally, I have a 2022 14” MBP w/ a M1 Max chip.

Sure you can do it very easily. Get the NVME of your choice and a USB 3.2 gen 2 x 2 enclosure. Go for Thunderbolt 3 or better if you have the cash!! The only drawbacks of Thunderbolt are price and Thunderbolt devices not working on a USB socket (even though the USB-C variant looks the same for both standards). If you don't need the SSD to be portable, that can allow even more speed from a connection to a PCIe slot directly.

ok, so you are not "building your own SSD", you are just buying an internal SSD and an enclosure that works like an adapter. ! Very important things to know ! Thunderbolt 3 is not USB type C TB3 is up to 40Gb/s or 5GB/s (5Go/s) USB C is different in two speed 3.1 gen 2 for 10Gb/s or 1,25GB/s (1,25Go/s) 3.1 gen 1 for 5Gb/s or 625MB/s (625Mo/s) ! Then the type of SSD ! M.2 is the type of connection NVME is the mostly the speed caractéristic, up to 9GB/s SATA is both, limited to 6Gb/s or 750MB/s (750Mo/s) So you can have SSD M.2 at SATA speed, SATA 2,5’ at SATA speed M.2 at NVME speed To conclude : Buying a SSD NVME and a USB C 3.1 gen 2 case is idiot because your SSD offer great speed like 1,5GB/s (1,5Go/s) but your case limite the speed up to 750MB/ (750Mo/s)

Just made my DIY ext thunderbolt 4 ext drive. Samsung 980 Pro Gen4 2TB with Konyead Thunderbolt 4 enclosure (also added a 2x5x1.5” heat sink). 2794.5 write / 2738.4 read. Wow! My internal 512 ssd is 4903.5 write / 5096 read. M1 Pro 16” Macbook Pro. 3-4X performance improvement from my last WD ext hd. Total cost $130 enclosure, $240 ssd, $8 heat sink: $378

Good timing on this as I was actually looking for a Thunderbolt solution as my MacBook M1 Pro 16" with 4 TB is delayed and I can pickup 1 TB model now. I have an order in for a MacBook Pro 16" with 4 TB Drive and feel the marginal cost for the convenience and performance of a 4 TB makes sense. The marginal cost from 1 TB to 4 is $1,000 which is not inexpensive but a good value considering the Sarbrent 4 TB SSD is $649 and the Trebleet is $149 for a total of: $798. I want to avoid having to shuffle SSDs. With this said may still purchase the recommendation here for additional storage. There is additional value with the External SSD as for example if I have a large Final Cut Project I can give to another person on the SSD for them to work on it. Note that I am just an enthusiast and have a large photo library in Lightroom and have been using Apple Photos more seriously. I have been using my MacBook Pro 13" 1 TB M1 with FCPX for simple video editing of GoPro biking footage and have a large library of older video that I want to get to work on.

Did exactly this a few months ago. Bought 2 nvme's 2tb and 2 external cases with usb-c connectors. 4TB external storage for 350 euro's. Well worth the money. Sure they aren't the fastest ssd's, but I use mine for steam game library, photoshop/lightroom storage and some general personal data. No need for sure fast speeds.

Is it necessary to grab the ssd models with the heat sink? If so can you run them with the heat sink without the enclosure cover

I've found that even the Sabrent Rocket Q 1TB SSD has good speed for $90 matted with a Wavlink T3 enclosure for $65. I get 1400 write and 2400 read. The Sabrent T3 tool free enclosure is limited to 1500 MB/s read/write but is good for testing purposes.

You can also save yourself and get an excellent Orico Thunderbolt 4 enclosure from Amazon or eBay, and built of aluminum as well, for around 100-110 dollars, and then spend the rest on the Pcie stick of your choice. I built mine for around 160 dollars, and it is blazing...

I just received a TREBLEET TB v2 enclosure and put a WD SN770 1TB m.2 gen4 SSD in it. So far, so good. I was looking at other enclosures, but decided on this because of your recommendation, and although not the cheaper options, I wanted to take advantage of the TB speed, and that this v2 enclosure works with both the MBP M1 Pro TB ports AND the USB on my older MBP 2015. Blackmagic speed test has write/read on the MBP 2021 in the 2700-2900Mb/s range, on the MBP 2015 it’s in the 400Mb/s range (as expected). Assembling is very easy, applied the silicon strip, but not sure it is actually in contact with the top of the case, and wonder how effective it is because of that. If not maybe a thin heat sink? It does get a bit warm, but in my limited use so far not excessive. Thanks!

I must be missing something. The enclosure costs about 200 dollars, then you buy the external storage for 200 dollars, to fit into the enclosure, costing 400. When instead, there is a 2TB Samsung T7 with 1000mps going for 200 dollars.

I just ordered a Mac Studio and I have zero experience with Mac OS after high school in the late 90's. What I do know, however, is that 512GB is not enough. Since upgrading internal storage isn't an option, I'd like to find the fastest external option available without having to crowdfund it or start an onlyfans. It looks like this could be the right direction to go.

Really good stuff, Max! Would love to do this but 1TB just isn't enough, and 2TB would be cutting it close for projects I get that are transcoded to Prores, which can amount to about 1-1/2 TB's worth of clips. Looking at going to 4TB is almost a mortgage payment!!

Consider putting the thermal pad on the case lid, and not the SSD, so that you can upgrade the SSD later and not need another thermal pad.

1:57 Minimum Speed „Higher is Better“. No, higher is not in general better. Only if you need your SSD as working hard drive for intensive high demanding media work ( like highres videoediting). In other cases if you not need this, and you need more storage, then it’s better to go for a slower SSD and get more storage space instead. You only need a high speed SSD if you do a task which demands high speed. Otherwise it’s not necessary. If you need more storage rather than speed, focus more on a SSD with more storage and slower speed.
@charleshines85232 жыл бұрын
Not only that but building your own gives you a better chance to repair it if the adapter board ever goes bad. With some of the off the shelf ones, the memory and adapter board would be one piece and no socket for the NVME. I have no idea what you would do with those ones. Some of the Samsung T series external SSDs are like that too. Some of them have a replaceable drive inside but then some of them have it all on one board and no socketed separate drive. That is the T5 or T7. Or the WD might have a socketed drive but glue holding it in.

yeah idk why he's recommending a 1tb drive for three times the price than most other SSD options that come pre build. Samsung and Sandisk are both ok options and sure, you could get faster read/write but for the average person it's more than plenty

@@Alusky For normal storage the T7 is more than fast enough. But if you are editing video directly off the drive, then you need Thunderbolt speeds. Personally, I would rather use the Mac's internal storage only for apps and temporary storage of files I'm working on, and then move everything to the external drive when I'm done.

the Sabrent SSD isn't really stable for me I found. The Amazon page from Trebleet now warns against it and I had the same experince with the Orico enclosure - it just ejects after a short while unexpectedly. The Trebleet website actually has a big warning on it too about not using that SSD. Switched to a Samsung 980 Pro today and I'm soaking it with Black Magic at the moment but I just left it idling and it didn't disconnect within the hour so fingers crossed this is a keeper. The 980 Pro also seems about 500MBM/s faster on the write test and is saying it would be capable of handling 12K DCI60 ProRes 422 HQ write where the Sabrent had a cross against this and could only handle it for Read.

Putting 5 screws and the tape doesn't constitute "building" SSD. Why the company that sells the PCIe card (which IS the SSD) doesn't do it? Why they sell "the kit" if it is so much better and cheaper then drives from respected producers? Very strange. Looks like an ad and rises too many questions.
