Mountain Equipment Annapurna jacket… IS This the Best Down Jacket for Winter Activities?
It could be, there are actually very few outdoor clothes that we’re satisfied with and that hold for years with the tough life we expose our clothes to.
There are many good positive things about this Mountain Equipment down jacket and very few negative. We have used our down jackets for years now, in extreme cold, snow storms, during long mountain expeditions and so on. So this is the best winter down jacket we have at the moment and Matti just bought himself a new one so, look at this trustworthy Mountain Equipment review of the Annapurna Jacket.

Ordered one of these , mostly based on this review. It arrived today and I must say, I'm extremely pleased with it. I have a Rab Resolution and thought that was warm. This is a whole other level of warmth. Fits great (even with my long arms). Full range of motion with no tightness. Good length in back and great hood. Looking forward to using it in the cold temps it's meant for. Thanks for the great review.

The Mountain Equipment Fits/Proportions are awesome. I own a ~10year old Vega that started loosing the metal zippers, Material itself is in great shape, I like the Lightline even more, though it's a little more 'boxy'. One huge Problem I found with the Vega has been the part where the hood connects to the rest of the upper jacket (neck region) this part is permanently empty of down (the tend to 'sink' in the separated boxes down. So the neck has no insulation. To me this is crucial. I enjoyed the jacket really even in Alp winters but expedition etc. is not an option. Can't understand why M.E. has not found a solution to this fact ...

It is also for us in Canada very cold today, went out to get some milk and food for the cats, -30 without the wind. It hurts you lungs to take a full breath without putting a neck gaiter in front of your nose, I know I tried it not a good feeling at all. Hands froze very fast had to put on my big mittens in a hurry. When you walk and the snow sounds crispy you know it is cold, a jacket like this one (similar to our snow Goose) would be good today indeed. Good video Matti,

Matti, I agree with most of what you said, I demand the best of materials and design. Sizing is important to me as I have a 49 inch chest and broad shoulders. Too small and the insulating material gets compressed; too large , its drafty. Depending on how generous the sizing is, I either wear 2XL or 3XL. The side zips going up to the armpits are a must for ventilation and fit. As for insulation, I look at loft as opposed to type of material. Loft is also tied to breathability. As I don’t have qualms about material, I like wool as it is breathable, stays warm if wet, and doesn’t get stinky (also easily aired out if it does smell) and can be durable if a small amount of synthetics is mixed in.

You are totally fine with XXL, M.E. comes bigger than many other brands, but the fit is snug and comfy, arm length is perfect and all the jackets go partially over your bum. 3XL will be way too Big if it even exists. Right now you'll find very good prices online. Could buy a used one, the rips top nylon doesn't really wear off and I went through a lot of thorns and hedges during garden work ...

Really good review. Great videos. Highlights both good design and poor design. The hood is designed to fit within a mountaineering environment rather than skidoo/dog sledding. With space for a helmet. I wonder if a good ruff would help, I've hand sewn a few to jackets to add that extra wind resistance. Might not work with skidoo speeds though.. I agree the zip hood is unnecessary. Great bit about the sleeves.. you only notice great design when it's not there.. the sleeves work well so you don't notice how well they are made. You can send the old jacket to a specialist cleaner/manufacturer to recover the down insulation.

If a down jacket (or any down garment or sleeping bag) starts to collapse (i.e. lose its loft), there is no need whatsoever to buy a new one. Just wash the jacket according to how you wash down items, and the loft will be fully restored. That is one of the advantages of down insulation.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Yes, I guess that can be the case for you as a professional guide who use your gear almost daily (in relevant season). For us leisure time users it's quite different: my oldest down bag is over 20 years old and I use it several weeks every summer, and so far it returns to top shape every time I wash it.

The water repellent layer/impregnation washes of rapidly. Since my first wash the cloth went instantly wet when rain. So I guess the problem is that German winter is to warm. Anyway you need a warm jacket so I am not really a fan of saying you don't wear a thick down jacket when it's above zero. Hours on a Christmas market in 1-5 degree Celsius will make u freeze very soon if not protected. And the jacket so does (if not wet)

@@dickbrett9827just reapply a DWR. Grangers repel or nikwax XT reproofer will sort that problem out. Spray on when the item is damp. Let it dry and put it in the tumble dryer on a low heat for about 30 minutes and it’ll be as good as new 👍

The rule I have used for many years is just like you say if you use a tool or clothes often or professionally buy the best. The sad thing is that nowadays many brands that used to be top quality are producing their things in China, I have some electric tools from Bosch from the '90s that are still working perfectly, bought a small angel grinder that lasted just 2 years and I hadn't used it all that much. edit, not everything that is produced in China holds low quality but a lot of the cheap stuff ain't worth the money in my opinion.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Mhm, I think a hood is very nice in a snow storm, as long as it doesnt fly away. I bought the jacket in 2020 and will send the jacket in if the hood happens to go its own way one day... In general ME produces really good and affordable quality equipment. But I also bought a drylite bib, which disintegrated after just one month during vita bandet. All the tapes got opened and I just had something like a bast skirt from drylite... I was not amused, but the customer support sent me a new one. Apart from that im happy with my ME gear.

Mountain Equipment makes quality gear but you can find better from smaller and more specialized companies. Besides, small companies usually have better environmental and human ethics. For down jacket made for very cold temperatures I'd personally recommend Triple Zero. A bit more expensive but lighter, better down quality, can be customized and 100% made in the South of France (as opposed to Mountain Equipment which is usually made in South-East Asia), using down from local farmers. Geese are not breed for the down only and live outside most of their life. Nothing from the animal is wasted. The equivalent of the Annapurna would be the Ukerdi 300 (400 for someone getting cold quickly). I've never seen a down jacket with a tunnel hood which normally hasn't much use cases for this type of garments. I'd simply make some sort of woolen balaclava with extra protection on the sides although I'm not convinced by tunnel hoods because they hide too much visibility. In Mongolia, nomads traditionally wrap thick wool scarfs around their face when travelling on yaks or reindeers in windy and cold temperatures (easily down to -30/-40°C). They only leave an opening for the eyes between the scarf and beany. Ancestral technics that have crossed the ages often prove to be the simplest and most efficient ones.
