Just received an update that Ginger had passed away. "Dad who was he?" After an hour of lecturing with words used such as "greatest drummer ever" and "rythm genius" and "listened to him in the porch of the Albert Hall as they wouldn't let anymore in" I did some fact checking. Not disappointed. Rock on into Legend. Your like won't be seen again.

I think I was in about 6th grade, when my brother took my Monkees album off our turntable, and replaced it with Fresh Cream. "Listen to this", he says. When I could finally find my voice I said "Who are these guys?! Can I have this album?! .THIS is real Rock?! When can we SEE them?!" Music was never the same for me. I must have thanked my brother a thousand times through the years. Do yourself a favor and listen to some of his interviews. He was freaking hilarious. A true original, playing drums better than anyone, with the best Bass player who ever lived, and some other little known Lead Guitarist, Eric Something....

This doesn't compare to Moby Dick. Ginger for his error was a good drummer. But when buddy himself says he was a hat kind of speaks volumes. He couldn't keep up with Bonzo. And don't even try to argue that evident in the way he plays. Baker played your typical drummer position he played with the bass player or he played as a drummer. Bonzo played with the guitar and that is what really put him on another level. Peart would embarrass Ginger.

Lovely to have a vast range of stuff but unnecessary of you can really play. Check extend version of soul Sacrifice ät Woodstock better still Tanglewood gig. For you naysayers, Ginger Baker was classic in the scene of the early 60's and 70's. No one was like him at this time, and his influence is still felt today. He was self-taught as a drummer. He used to bang on whatever to amuse his friends while another band was playing. He got his chance to play for real when for the first time he stepped behind a Ludwig drum kit and did an impromptu audition on a dare. He got the job and beat out a seasoned drummer. The rest is history.

How he managed to survive 20 years addicted to heroin and still play so brilliantly is beyond me. If you haven't watched it, check out "Beware Mr. Baker." That gives you a little insight into Ginger. Also, the 3 day reunion concert they gave in 2006 at Prince Albert Hall is earth-shattering. He lived for one thing: playing the drums. He screwed over practically everybody he came across, including his own kids and wife, and didn't give a shit. He was focused on drumming and that's it. Baker was a well known junkie, heroin from the mid to late 50s until the day he died. He was a long distance cyclist, which he claims gave him the endurance to out last other drummers. The guy was a full blown prick, but there's no question that his contribution to rock & jazz influenced thousands of musicians, even if it was indirectly.

Ginger Baker was great combination of jazz and rock drummer!!!! He was at his prime for a very short time and then Drugs and alcohol took over his life. What a career he could of had!!!! Unfortunately, he is not alone there have been a lot of rock stars that Ruined their life and careers with drugs and alcohol.

Ginger Baker is not only the greatest rock n roll drummer of all time , he was the FIRST "white" Jazz Master Drummer . If you don't know alot about music timing and beats, he is doing stuff that was UNHEARD-OF in the popular music world at that time. In his early years he engulfed himself into African tribal drumming techniques, which gave his music a depth and an originality that sets him apart. One of his major drawbacks, unfortunately very common among virtuosos , is he was famously difficult to work with which in my opinion robbed the mainstream audience of further exposure to his greatness. LONG LIVE GINGER BAKER!!!

Right, he was "doing stuff that was UNHEARD-OF in the popular music world", because black musicians were locked out of the world of pop music. I'd venture to say that Chick Webb could have schooled any other drummer - Gene Krupa even said as much. But you never hear about him because at the time he could only play gigs in Harlem, principally at the Savoy; another great black american relegated to obscurity by the rich white men pulling the strings in the professional music scene at the time...

First White Jazz master drummer? Are u nuts? Have u seen his doc? The first great white jazz drum masters were in the swing era. Dave Tough, Gene Krupa and technique monster Buddy Rich are the foundation of white jazz drummers. Post the swing era into Bebop which is the style Baker played before his rock excursions, there were many great white drummers who imo were better than Baker. Stan Levy, Shelly Manne, Tiny Kahn, Joe Morello & Mel Lewis are just a few names I could mention. There are also many British contemporaries of Baker who I would put ahead of Baker in terms of jazz drumming. His teacher Phil Seaman is an easy shout as he was for me the greatest drummer in British history, Tony Oxley, Bobby Orr, John Stevens and many more names who are at least on par with Baker with regards to Jazz playing, with the 4 names mentioned being better imo! I could on and on. To call Baker the first great white jazz drummer is one of the most ridiculous statements I've heard on the subject!
