Just received an update that Ginger had passed away. "Dad who was he?" After an hour of lecturing with words used such as "greatest drummer ever" and "rythm genius" and "listened to him in the porch of the Albert Hall as they wouldn't let anymore in" I did some fact checking. Not disappointed. Rock on into Legend. Your like won't be seen again.

For you naysayers, Ginger Baker was classic in the scene of the early 60's and 70's. No one was like him at this time, and his influence is still felt today. He was self-taught as a drummer. He used to bang on whatever to amuse his friends while another band was playing. He got his chance to play for real when for the first time he stepped behind a Ludwig drum kit and did an impromptu audition on a dare. He got the job and beat out a seasoned drummer. The rest is history.

Ginger Baker is not only the greatest rock n roll drummer of all time , he was the FIRST "white" Jazz Master Drummer . If you don't know alot about music timing and beats, he is doing stuff that was UNHEARD-OF in the popular music world at that time. In his early years he engulfed himself into African tribal drumming techniques, which gave his music a depth and an originality that sets him apart. One of his major drawbacks, unfortunately very common among virtuosos , is he was famously difficult to work with which in my opinion robbed the mainstream audience of further exposure to his greatness. LONG LIVE GINGER BAKER!!!

Right, he was "doing stuff that was UNHEARD-OF in the popular music world", because black musicians were locked out of the world of pop music. I'd venture to say that Chick Webb could have schooled any other drummer - Gene Krupa even said as much. But you never hear about him because at the time he could only play gigs in Harlem, principally at the Savoy; another great black american relegated to obscurity by the rich white men pulling the strings in the professional music scene at the time...

First White Jazz master drummer? Are u nuts? Have u seen his doc? The first great white jazz drum masters were in the swing era. Dave Tough, Gene Krupa and technique monster Buddy Rich are the foundation of white jazz drummers. Post the swing era into Bebop which is the style Baker played before his rock excursions, there were many great white drummers who imo were better than Baker. Stan Levy, Shelly Manne, Tiny Kahn, Joe Morello & Mel Lewis are just a few names I could mention. There are also many British contemporaries of Baker who I would put ahead of Baker in terms of jazz drumming. His teacher Phil Seaman is an easy shout as he was for me the greatest drummer in British history, Tony Oxley, Bobby Orr, John Stevens and many more names who are at least on par with Baker with regards to Jazz playing, with the 4 names mentioned being better imo! I could on and on. To call Baker the first great white jazz drummer is one of the most ridiculous statements I've heard on the subject!

He is neither. He is an average skilled rock drummer and poor jazz drummer. Phil Seaman, hismentor could not teach him to keep time.

It's a very good drum solo, but it's "basic and crude" compared to even the worst solos by drummers like Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Coliuta and dozens of other drummers.
